While the release of a brand new game gives players a ton to learn in terms of mechanics, character abilities, matchups, and more, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U kicked that factor up a notch with the inclusion of custom moves for the entire cast.
In addition to their default special moves, each character also has access to two alternate choices that alter how the maneuver functions. For example, Mario’s F.L.U.D.D., which normally only pushes opponents away, can be customized to deal scalding damage instead. It can also be given high-pressure capabilities that increase the pushback but slow charging time.
So far, major tournaments have yet to allow custom moves in competition, but the early appearances of exceptionally strong characters like Diddy Kong have made their game-changing properties more appealing to members of the Smash scene. And thanks to a decision made by the Evo 2015 staff a little over a week ago, discussion on this issue is sure to heat up exponentially.
Earlier tonight, it was discovered that the event’s ruleset now allows for the choosing of custom moves, and we here at Shoryuken got in touch with co-founder Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar for a bit more insight into their decision. According to him, this rule is a tentative one, established as an incentive for upcoming tournaments make the specials legal and see how things pan out.
“The greater community seems to want custom movesets, so I gave them until March 27 to figure it out, then we are locking them in,” Cuellar concluded. “We will do what the community wants to do in the end.”
So, what are your thoughts? Do Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s custom moves deserve a spot in tournament competition or should they be relegated to casual matches? Let us know in the comments and, more importantly, provide your opinions directly to the Evo organizers if you feel strongly one way or the other.
