Are guest characters good or problematic? Maximilian discusses the question

Guest characters seem to be in vogue again, as we’re seeing more and more crossover characters in many fighting games. We’ve recently seen the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sub Zero step into Injustice 2. More recently, the most surprising reveal has been Final Fantasy XV‘s Noctis joining Tekken 7.

This the topic Maximilian Dood is tackling in his latest video. He poses the question of whether guest characters cause more harm or good for a fighting game. For instance, a con of having a guest character is taking up time and resources for a side character rather than using it for someone from the franchise that fans of the specific title might be waiting on. In Maximilian’s opinion, Noctis not only doesn’t belong in Tekken 7, but he also delays other fan-favorites that haven’t made it to the game yet.

On the other hand, they can bring a lot of hype as well; everyone remembers the Soul Calibur II guest characters, Heihachi, Spawn, and Link. We’ve also often Akuma step into other games, not to mention the fact that X-Men vs. Street Fighter is entirely built on a guest character battle. There are countless other examples.

What’s your opinion? Talk about it in the comments below and mention your favorite guest characters.

How to fight Chipp: video guides from a Guilty Gear pro BjornSonOfBear

Chipp has been a fairly strong character in the right hands; though he does lose pretty easily, his movement and mix-up options are so robust, the untrained eye loses to him very easily. His Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 iteration, in particular, gained so many options from a wall cling mechanic. A good Chipp player can easily overwhelm someone who doesn’t know what to do.

That’s why it’s so valuable that Chipp pro player, Xcel|BjornSonOfBear, has put out a lot of content tackling various aspects of the character: from Bursting appropriately to dealing with certain mix-ups and special moves.

The first video, “Dealing with rekkas 101,” talks about how to deal with Chipp’s series of special attacks. The clip shows what kind of punishes are possible after blocking certain follow-ups, also depending on successful Instant Block. Check out the video on YouTube for a detailed explanation in the description.

The next one covers one of Chipp’s Overdrives. “Dealing with Ryuuyanagi” shows this dangerous mix-up that starts with a left-right side, but then has many reset and follow-up opportunities. It definitely helps to have a Dragon Punch move! Refer to the description for more details.

“But he can teleport!”

In “Dealing with teleports,” Bears covers common options in pressure with teleports. Using certain option selects, like a throw one, can help defend against inevitable cross-ups from Chipp. The YouTube description explains it in more detail.

This one is definitely a must-see. Chipp has plenty of hard-to-react corner options with his wall cling. He can hit from behind, or do several options from the front: an overhead, low, or throw. The later part of the video shows Chipp defensively clinging to the wall to mount a comeback. Make sure to read the YouTube description of “Dealing with High Wall Cling 101” for more instruction.

These are some of the highlights, but there are more videos, like “Bursting vs. Chipp” and “Dealing with Alpha Blade.”

The game is available either for Android devices on Google Play or from the App Store for iOS users.

Check out Noel, Chie, Waldstein, and RWBY’s Weiss Schnee gameplay in these BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle overview clips

As time goes on, Arc System Works is pumping out its characters for BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle at a steady pace, more or less hitting on all the franchise fronts that the game combines. Rather than a new reveal, we’re catching up on a gameplay overview of some past entrants: Noel Vermillion, Chie Satonaka, Waldstein, and Weiss Schnee.

The clip, put together by Jourdal, starts with BlazBlue‘s melee dual-gun wielder Noel, who shows some shorter and longer combos with an assist. A lot of her Drive moves are retained as EX moves that cost one bar to use. Next up is Persona‘s Chie, whose damage can get very explosive with the right hits. Under Night In Birth‘s Waldstein is a huge grappler, and the first character of that archetype to enter the fray. Lastly, we get a look at RWBY’s Weiss Schnee, who places glyphs on the screen. Those can either send ice projectiles or be used as launch pads for dynamic strikes. Jin Kisaragi gets a taste of his own cold medicine.

The latest BBXTAG reveal includes Yukiko Amagi, Gordeau, and Azrael.

Watch Nage creatively destroy opponents in this “Best Moments” Guilty Gear compilation

The best way to sum up Japanese player Nage is to call him a wizard, probably. The young Guilty Gear master is known around the world as an incredible Faust player. The lanky doctor has the most RNG and randomness in his gameplay, and yet Nage magically creates amazing synergies with whatever item he throws out.

megalodon summary has prepared a compilation of best Nage moments. At the very start, you can see Nage bully world-class Leo Whitefang player T5M7 (Tomo) with perfect pressure. Who would Instant Kill May on her wake-up? Of course, no one but Nage. There are several amazing moments where Nage seemingly improvises creative combinations into Instant Kills. For every situation and for any punish, Nage knows exactly how to finish off the opponent.

Check out the entertaining reel below to see some amazing moments with Nage.

BlazBlue’s 10th anniversary is coming up, and Arc System Works has launched a celebration site

As hard as it is to believe, one of Arc System Works’ newer franchises, BlazBlue, is nearly ten years old now. Are you feeling old yet? To celebrate, ASW put up a new, commemorative site which provides useful tidbits about the franchise.

Though it’s only in Japanese, the BlazBlue 10th Anniversary website lets you read up on all the games in the series, from Calamity Trigger to Central Fiction. There’s also a section on all the characters, including those who appeared only in novels, comics, and side works. The “Creators” page only talks about Toshimichi Mori for now, but it looks like more content will be added. There’s also a Character Popularity Poll and an Illustration Contest.

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger released in Japanese arcades on November 19th, 2008, followed up by consumer releases on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009. At the time, it appeared to be a successor to the Guilty Gear series.

BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle is coming in 2018 on the PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Beat Guilty Gear Xrd’s Sin Kiske with these pro tips

Sin Kiske has been a fairly dominating character in Xrd -REVELATOR- and remains one of the stronger ones in REV 2, despite some nerfs. It’s not surprising — he’s got great range, confirms into huge damage, and controls the screen easily with Beak Driver. The only thing holding him back is his appetite. If his reach and insufferably cool attitude have been preventing you from ascending in tournaments, these video tips on how to deal with Sin might be the recipe for triumph.

Kizzie Kay is one of the strongest Sin players in the United States, and fortunately for the rest of us, he decided to make some videos that showcase methods to deal with Sin. Check out some of the clips he created below, and there is additional tech provided by other FGC members.

Zidane also stepped up to provide some Leo punishes on Sin:

Silva also contributed a Jack-O’-specific tech:
