Take Tekken on the road with Tekken Mobile

Announced ahead of Gamescom next week, Bandai Namco have revealed a portable spin-off of the Tekken series. Styled after other mobile fighting games like Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat X, Tekken Mobile has players assembling teams of famous series faces to battle against both AI and human opponents.

Similar to other mobile fighters, Tekken Mobile mixes gacha game, RPG and fighter mechanics, with players leveling up and customizing characters as they strive to make the ultimate fighting team. During the game’s Story Mode, you’ll build up your collection of fighters, while battling bosses and grappling with special fight conditions. You can then take the resources gathered from Story Mode and take it into Tekken Mobile’s online Dojo Challenge, where you can battle against friends and random opponents to climb up the Ranked ladder. There will also be special live events, where players can unlock special characters and complete themed missions.

To mirror Tekken’s freeform combo system, Tekken Mobile uses a mechanic called “Waza Cards”. These decks of ability cards mirror specials found in Tekken, complete with moves which break guards, launch the opponent or armor through enemy attacks. Players can collect more Waza Cards through play, to then craft their own custom combos. There is even the ability to save match replays to show off your super-sick Waza combos.

With it being part gacha game, there are microtransactions in Tekken Mobile. You can pay cash to get more of the game’s premium currency – which can buy you health packs, Waza Cards and character upgrades – or to get additional lootboxes. These lootboxes can contain new fighters, upgrade materials and health packs which can keep you fighting for longer. You can unlock lootboxes and premium currency through normal play, but you can speed your progress by spending some of your real-life Fight Money.

There is no set release date for Tekken Mobile but it will be free to play on both iOS and Android devices when it launches. Expect more news on this handheld fighter during Gamescom.
