The Beefy Smash Doods delve into Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s “semi-techable wallbump”

Smash 4 is coming up on its third birthday this year, yet discoveries are still being made for the fighter. From new character tech to figuring out certain engine quirks, lab monsters and researchers are still hard to work trying to understand everything in the game. Most recently, players have uncovered the reason as to why players can’t tech the underside of certain stages.

Christened the “semi-techable wallbump” by the Beefy Smash Doods, a handful of competitive stages have areas where players must vary up their tech timing in order to stop themselves bouncing into the abyss. The factors for this wallbump include players hitting an area that cannot be walljumped off of, players colliding with a very small wall or a corner of a stage. The Beefy Smash Doods give examples of all of these areas on current competitive stages, so you know where to look out for when recovering back to stage.

As for why it’s called a “semi-techable” wallbump, players have to hit the shield button eight frames before they hit the wall if they want to tech the hit. If you try to tech as you hit the wall, your character will do nothing. You can tell if you’ve hit one of these semi-techable areas as your character only lets off a puff of smoke as they fly off the wall, rather than the usual sparks and smoke.
