While most people were excited at the announcement of SoulCalibur VI, a number of players were disappointed at one particular aspect of the announcement: the lack of a Nintendo Switch release. The series has always had a special place in the hearts of Nintendo fans, due to SoulCalibur II being released on the GameCube with the Legend of Zelda‘s Link as a guest character. Now, in a recent interview with Metro’s Gamecentral, producer Motohiro Okubo was asked about the possibility of a port for Nintendo’s portable/console hybrid.
According to Okubo, since SoulCalibur VI started development before they knew anything about the Switch, a version for it was not considered. “SoulCalibur VI development started more than three years ago. And nobody knew anything about Switch back then. So, as a matter of fact we are not working on Switch, as of now,” he states. However, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a port, “I’m interested in the platform. So if the Unreal Engine can adapt to Switch, and evolve itself, then maybe the possibility will be more.”
The last bit is the most interesting. While Unreal Engine 4 (the same engine that SoulCalibur VI is using) initially did not support the Switch, it received an update this past May (version 4.16) that gave it full-featured native support for the system. Of course, the engine supporting the Switch is different from actually getting the game to run well on it, and porting SoulCalibur VI‘s code as-is may not result in game that runs well on the admittedly less-powerful system. That said: maybe with some further tweaks and updates, we’ll eventually be able to see SoulCalibur VI on Switch.
SoulCalibur VI is set to release sometime in 2018 on PlayStation 4, XBox One, and PC.
