The top fighting game players in the nation converged at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C. on Friday, November 16th for Day One of the Red Bull Conquest National Finals. After an exciting day of fierce match-ups and thrilling victories, three winners were crowned during the Last Chance Qualifier, while the top 8 winners were determined in the National Finals bracket. With the top 8 now locked-in, only one more day of matches stand between the finalists and the title of Red Bull Conquest National champion.
In the D.C. Last Chance Qualifiers, players from across the country showed up in full force today for the opportunity to earn the last coveted spots at the Finals. Despite facing some of the toughest competition in the qualifier circuit, Alan “Nephew” Sun came out on top and beat out leading national competitors in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. In the Tekken 7 bracket, Matt “TCOL|SourPiggy” Davila dominated the scene, while Jorge “Shine” Orellana managed to beat out tough competition in Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2.
While the Last Chance Qualifier battles played out, the winners from previous Conquest qualifiers competed in the top 16 match-ups across Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Tekken 7 and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2. Following some heated match-ups, 24 players are now one step closer to being crowned national champions.
The Venue
The entire arena floor was open to competitors and spectators alike. For Guilty Gear Xrd and Tekken 7, there were 16 stations for tournament/casual play. Street Fighter V had 32 stations for tournament/casual play. Each station came equipped with audio amps and Steel Series headsets. There were plenty of casuals going on all the day at the venue. Located in the middle of the venue was the caster couch, along with the secondary stream station.
There were also several other booths located in the back of the venue. You could play Tekken and Guilty Gear casuals in the 7-Eleven Rally Corner, buy exclusive Red Bull cocktails (“Rise”, “Rally”, and “Conquer”) at the Red Bull AR Bar, take a 360 AR photo at the Hyundai 360 Photo-Op, buy Red Bull Conquest attire at the Red Bull Conquest booth, purchase HORI products and play SoulCalibur VI casuals at the HORI booth, or check your brackets and speak to tournament staff at the TO Headquarters.
What Happened During the Last Chance Qualifier:
At today’s Last Chance Qualifiers, fighting game enthusiasts came from far and wide in the hopes of earning a spot at tomorrow’s Red Bull Conquest National Finals. Despite facing some of the best players in the nation, Pittsburgh’s Alan “Nephew” Sun ultimately pulled a 3-1 victory against pro-athlete Darryl “Snake Eyez” Lewis in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. While reflecting on his win, Nephew called his competition “top level,” and noted he’s focused on ensuring a win on Saturday. In Tekken 7, Matt “TCOL|SourPiggy” Davila of New York City pulled through 3-1 against competitor Lathaniel “Joonya_20z” Jordan. A player for esports organization The Collective, Sour Piggy attributed his win to “peace, love and positivity,” emphasizing that his positive outlook kept him focused. Lastly, New York City’s own Jorge “Shine” Mejia claimed a narrow 3-2 victory against leading player Iyaz “Flashnub” Shaikh. After the match, Shine called the final Last Chance Qualifier face-off stressful, yet “really fun and a different way to play the game.”
What Happened During the Top 16:
During the top 16 brackets in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Tekken 7 and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, the 48 Conquest qualifier winners from across the country gave it their all throughout the evening. After several nail-biting match-ups, 24 players are now advancing to the top 8, with three winners ultimately earning the title of national champions at the end of Day Two.
