Platform fighters, such as the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, have the distinction from other fighting genres of allowing combat beyond the traditional 1-on-1 format. However, hosting tournaments for these hasn’t always been easy. Now, Challonge has announced a new format that can enable these tournaments.
The new “Free For All” format from Challonge was ostensibly designed to work with Battle Royale-type games such as Fortnite. However, the format also works with platform fighters’ last-man-standing modes, something that isn’t lost on Challonge. Challonge CEO Matt McIntyre has stated that, “We currently working with several Super Smash Brothers Ultimate tournament organizers to add formal competitions around the four player and eight player last-character-standing modes.”
Whether or not we’ll see these kinds of competitions become more common with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — and other platform fighters — is something that remains to be seen.
