A pirate’s life for me!
SNK held a Samurai Shodown panel at PAX East 2019 that recapped some of the information shared earlier at the beginning of the convention. The presenters laid out a bevy of information about the franchise’s roots and its objectives. SNK’s focus for Samurai Shodown is to balance maintaining the franchise’s legacy while utilizing Unreal Engine 4 to bring the visual presentation to new heights.
There will also be a “Revolutionary new AI system” called “Ghost AI”. This new AI will learn as it fights the player, including their “technique and habits”, creating a ghost fighter to go up against. Players will be able to upload their Ghost to leaderboards to compete. You can also download other players’ Ghost data allowing you to compete against friends who are away or even the pros! There is even a special game mode titled the “Ironman Challenge” that pits players against 100 Ghost opponents in one survival deathmatch!
SNK also confirmed there will be a total of 16 fighters in Samurai Shodown, three of which will be newcomers. And speaking of newcomers, Darli Dagger was announced to be the first of the new trio. Only the character’s concept art was shown, but her design alone is enough to make more than a few fans. The jolly roger with heart eyes on her sword is definitely a nice touch.

On top of the launch roster, SNK stated it has plans for additional fighters through DLC packs. In the main game, every character will have their own unique storylines in story mode, which will be sure to please players who have kept with the series from the beginning and newcomers alike. Hopefully, the added DLC fighters also come with an extra story mode paths.
Samurai Shodown releases on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June with just enough time for players to build their skills before Evo 2019. The Nintendo Switch and PC versions will release sometime later on.
