While the Marvel vs. Capcom games are (partly) inspired by Marvel’s comics, the series’ long life means that it has also inspired comic creators themselves. The latest of these is Charles Soule, who in giving new powers to the resurrected Wolverine, has stated that he was inspired by Capcom’s storied fighting game series.
For those who aren’t familiar with the current comic book storylines, here’s a quick summary: Wolverine, that is the original one, James “Logan” Howlett, is being resurrected after he died back in 2014. As part of this, he’s getting a new power — the ability to heat up his claws to extreme temperatures.
As part of a video message played at the San Diego Comic Convention, writer Charles Soule stated that the Marvel vs. Capcom games were the inspiration for Logan’s new powers. Now, longtime fans of the series will likely find this odd — Wolverine never had heated-claw powers in the games themselves. Is Soule trying to explain how Wolverine can leave giant X-shaped slashes in mid air (with fire, this time)? We’ll find out when the Return of Wolverine mini-series debuts in September.
