Among the large number of games shown off during this past weekend’s PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas, representatives from NetherRealm Studios were on hand to talk about their upcoming fighter Mortal Kombat X.

Game Informer was able to catch up with executive producer Shaun Himmerick to discuss the title, during which he dropped some intriguing information regarding antagonist Quan Chi.

“Quan Chi probably gives away some hints for the story stuff,” Himmerick explained, “like where are we, and what’s going on.”

The necromancer, who first debuted in Mortal Kombat 4, is one of the strongest characters in the Mortal Kombat universe, capable of stealing souls and bringing the dead back to life. However, those he reanimates rarely come back exactly how they left.

“I always joke that I think one of the reasons Ed wanted to do Quan Chi is because he’s the guy from Hell who can resurrect people,” Himmerick mentioned when asked of the decade-spanning story. “Quan Chi obviously lets us do that. The nice thing: We have a whole new generation of people to play with, not just the one age. We can kind of have different tiers from different ages.”

2011’s Mortal Kombat has the distinction of being one of the franchise’s most casualty-heavy entries, with major characters like Kung Lao, Kitana, Liu Kang, and Shao Kahn meeting their respective ends over the course of the game. Sub-Zero, also numbered among those who passed on, has already been confirmed to return in Mortal Kombat X, so those who count themselves as fans of deceased cast members may still see their favorites make appearances.

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC on April 14.
