Three pillars of the fighting game community have come together to create a game that’s looking to turn the fighting game genre on its head. Rising Thunder is an upcoming online PC fighter from the minds of Radiant Entertainment: Tom Cannon, Tony Cannon and Seth Killian. Their team is working to a make a title that’s open and welcoming to all players, novice and master.
There are a few things that set Rising Thunder apart from traditional fighting game titles. One is its controls. Execution can be a difficult barrier for newcomers to the genre to overcome. Rising Thunder eschews the quarter-circles and back charges of typical fighting games and goes for simple control scheme that executes the majority of your moves with a single button press. The setup may seem basic, but there’s still plenty of style to be had.
Second, Rising Thunder is online-only. The game is specifically designed to be played with two screens, with abilities that take advantage of the setup, like a character being visible on the controlling player’s screen but invisible on the opponent’s. This means that the game unfortunately does not support local multiplayer. On the bright side, with the game’s online infrastructure powered by GGPO3, you can expect a solid online experience.
Finally, Rising Thunder is free-to-play. The game will use a model that keeps the gameplay experience free of charges. No worries, just have fun!
If you’re looking to try out Rising Thunder, you won’t have to wait long. The technical alpha for the title starts tomorrow, July 28. If you’d like to sign up, head over to risingthunder.com. Also check out pieces from GameSpot, IGN and other outlets for more on the philosophy behind the game.
