Tonight, Geoff Keighley presented yet another attempt at a gaming awards show, this time striking off on his own in an effort to give the event the pizzazz it deserves.

One of the categories was, naturally, fighting games. The nominees included Killer Instinct (season two), Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Ultra Street Fighter IV.

Now, while these awards weren’t meant for the competitive audience, it’s still interesting to see how the larger gaming crowd takes to the genre. Additionally, Keighley pulled together a variety of industry folks, from journalists to developers, to help decide the winners in each category.

In the end, they chose Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as the year’s best fighter, proving that the franchise has a level of recognition that surpasses even Street Fighter at this point.

So, what do you think? Was this deserved? We’ll be running our own set of polls in the near future (similar to what we did last year) but, for now, feel free to give us your thoughts in the comments.
