That Was Definitely a Denjin Hadouken in Street Fighter V’s Reveal

Over the past few days, news has moved fast regarding Street Fighter V, Capcom’s follow-up to the community-rejuvenating Street Fighter IV. One point of contention, however, had to do with the electrified fireball utilized by Ryu in both the teaser and gameplay trailers.

In a previous article, I assumed the appearance of this move gave us some insight into the position Street Fighter V takes on the franchise timeline, but there was still no clear indication other than the added effects that what we were seeing was actually a Denjin Hadouken.

Well, we now have that confirmation.

Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono recently took to PlayStation Europe’s official blog to discuss the title’s PlayStation 4 exclusivity and, while there wasn’t a whole lot of new information, the producer mentions the move by name.

Canonically, the Denjin Hadouken has only been used by Ryu in Street Fighter III, though it was available to Evil Ryu in the Street Fighter EX series. Street Fighter IV’s Gouken also has it at his disposal.

In addition to providing some hints to Street Fighter V’s story, we can also make some assumptions as to what it will bring to Ryu’s moveset. As a chargeable projectile, the Denjin Hadouken is rather versatile, capable of putting out quick damage like its normal counterpart or (if the combo or time permits) inflicting huge damage and stun.

Street Fighter V will appear on PlayStation 4 and PC. A release date has yet to be announced.
