That tomato is an incredibly versatile entity in the culinary world. Considered to be either a fruit or a vegetable depending on how it’s used, the plant inhabits a vast amount of cultural dishes all across the globe. Interestingly enough, that same flexibility can be found in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, though in a way the developers probably never intended.
In a recent video uploaded by Leron Tolmachev, the title’s Maxim Tomato can be seen taking the place of every other item due to an unexplained glitch. While most still function as intended, Assist Trophies and Pokéballs cause the game to crash to the home screen.
Smash Ball? Glowing tomato. Back Shield? Protective tomato. Steel Diver? A tomato that shoots mini-tomatoes.
Funny enough, he discovers over the course of his explanation that even character-specific items, like those spawned by Pac-Man’s neutral special, show up as tomatoes as well.
After having to cut the video short thanks to battery issues, Tolmachev followed up on a few questions in the comments, stating that these issues seem confined to this one 3DS and not the game cartridge itself, leading him to believe the problem lies within the handheld.
