As the most visible and iconic match in fighting game history, Evo Moment #37 has been discussed to death, both inside and outside of our niche scene. What these conversations rarely include, however, is input from the players involved.

The latest episode of ‘Kotaku Compete’ does just that, inviting both Mad Catz’ Daigo Umehara and Justin Wong of Evil Geniuses onto the program to provide insight on this famous moment. While it’s likely you all know the story, their video offers a short recap before going to the competitors themselves.

Umehara came to Evo 2004 at one of the peaks of his competitive career and with something to prove to his American opponents. “I wanted to show Justin [Wong] that this wasn’t going to be an ordinary fight,” the Japanese legend explains. But Wong had aspirations of his own, saying that he was focused on being a good representative for the east coast and his hometown arcade, Chinatown Fair.
