Xian Demonstrates a Parry Option Select for Ryu in Street Fighter V’s Beta

Ever since Ryu’s Mind’s Eye V-Skill in Street Fighter V was shown to be a parry, more than a few veteran players wondered if this would allow for parry based option selects similar to Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, and, well, it seems that prediction has come to pass.

In a recent tweet, Razer’s Xian shared a way in which Ryu can use his V-Skill to set up an option select between a parry, a throw tech, and just plain old blocking.  The technique is done by holding back (or down back) and pressing the input for the throw tech almost immediately after activating the V-Skill, similar to how players would plink normals in Street Fighter IV.

As Xian demonstrates in his tweet below, this option select allows Ryu to deal with both a poke and a throw attempt with a single motion. More importantly, a successful parry allows Ryu to punish with a Shoryuken and, even though it’s not shown below, cancel that into his super, similar to certain option selects in 3rd Strike.

This is obviously not a perfect option and may not even make it into the final game, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on if you plan to take Street Fighter V seriously. Let us know what you think in the comments.
