Testing Demonstrates That Legacy Controllers Have Less Delay In Street Fighter V on PlayStation 4
Recently, we reported on the possibility that using legacy controllers on the PlayStation 4 version of Street Fighter V produced less input delay than controllers built for the system. However, these reports didn’t feature any test results.
To determine whether such reports were true, Tim “Moonchilde” Purcell from Shoryuken’s Tech Talk forums decided to to do some testing of his own.
The tests, which were done by wiring up two separate controller PCBs to a single button, show that legacy controllers are at least 1 frame faster than native PS4 controllers. The result is based on the fact that Vega’s standing short kick (which was used for testing) always gets a counter hit in favor of the legacy controller at point blank range (hitting at the first active frame) while trading at max range (when both have to be in their active frames to reach).
In addition to this, Moonchilde also tested native controllers versus those connected by converters. It turns out that even converters with the least amount of delay (in this case, the Brook PS2 to PS4 converter) add at least 2 frames of input delay.
As for what these test results mean for tournaments, that’s probably up to individual tournament organizers to figure out. For those planning to use legacy controllers or converters at events, be sure to check with the tournament organizers before hand.
