Injustice 2’s Lead Producer Sheds Light on the Game’s Gear System

The new Gear System being introduced in the upcoming DC fighter, Injustice 2, has some a little worried. Concerned parties are likely remembering the missteps of Street Fighter X Tekken, and many are hoping that history doesn’t repeat itself.

In a recent interview with producer Adam Urbano, Gamasutra focused on the game’s competitive aspect, but made sure to address concerns with how itemization stands to affect play. Urbano made it clear that a “dedicated little team that focuses on the tournament crowd” exists, and that “their job is to sit there throughout the lifespan of the game and do nothing but work with pro players, listen to the community, and make adjustments on the fly.” Ubano went on to state that this team has “actually increased the frequency with which we can update, even from what we could do with Mortal Kombat X, so we can make changes to these thousands and thousands of pieces of gear.” This sounds potentially intimidating for veteran players who want to get used to the game and learn it without it constantly changing.

Urbano also mentioned that they had been working on the Gear System since the first Injustice. However, it appears that the team understands how wrong this system could go, since they’re treading new ground here, and at the very least they are treating it with the proper caution.

Capcom USA Approved the Bud Light All-Stars, Still in Discussion with Anheuser-Busch for the Future

This year’s rules amendments to the Capcom Pro Tour have been a matter of heated discussion, namely in how they may close doors to sponsorships due to the restrictions against products–and companies that create products–marketed to adults. The Bud Light All-Stars–quite obviously a promotion run by a company “that manufacture[s], sell[s], [and] distribute[s]…alcoholic beverages,” something expressly banned by the Capcom Pro Tour’s amended rules–is one that falls into such problematic territory.

In the wake of Panda Global’s Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez being nominated and subsequently voted in by his fans to represent Street Fighter in the program, Capcom USA’s director of digital media and eSports, Neidel “Haunts” Crisan, explained to the /r/StreetFighter community how he actually greenlit Street Fighter’s inclusion in the Bud Light program, and is still in regular communication with Anheuser-Busch regarding its future.

According to his posts (edited for clarity): “We’re looking at how pro sports handle this stuff as well, and from what I’ve seen a lot of these brands typically buy media (ad space) rather than sponsor teams/players, though there are exceptions … In short, we’re talking with these brands assuring them we aren’t closing the door and want to keep the conversation going in terms of how they would integrate into this space.”

Regarding what sponsors might be deemed acceptable, Crisan adds: “For player sponsorships, it’s a tough decision to make, and honestly the community wasn’t wrong saying it’s a bit hypocritical to ban some adult product sponsors but allow others. A lot of it comes down to being fair to the players. We don’t want to get into a situation where we’re playing favorites and saying ‘Oh yeah we’ll promote this player’s sponsor, but not this other player’s sponsor’.”

Crisan indicated that we would be hearing more on this subject after Street Fighter V’s upcoming June update. The original Reddit discussion can be viewed here.

Stay Earthbound in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Using Lucas’ New ‘Snakeskipping’ Recovery Tech

Smash 4 has a huge roster. With so many characters to choose from, some characters will get all the attention, leaving others to fall out of the spotlight. One such character is Lucas, largely forgotten despite his return appearance from past games. While seeing tech from popular characters is fine and good, seeing what underused characters can do is always a treat.

Lucas Main Magnetgoat has found some interesting tech to help recover while off the ledge. This tech involves immediately canceling his Rope Snake to maintain momentum and keep control of the match.
