2GGaming has followed through on its word and has officially revealed that they will be hosting 2GGT: Civil War some time in the near future. The seed for this tournament was sown just after Get On My Level 2016, following Ally’s victory over TSM ZeRo and the resulting Twitter storm surrounding who would rally behind each player if there was a Marvel-esque Civil War within the world of Super Smash Bros for Wii U. This tournament will have Ally and ZeRo assembling two teams from the world’s best Smashers to fight for supremacy and determine who is the best.
2GGaming will slowly be revealing each of the team members in the run-up to the event but players like Team Liquid’s Nairo, Panda Global’s Trela, Kamemushi, Dream Team’s Dabuz, Mr-R, Team eLevate’s Larry Lurr and Komorikiri have been named as just a few of the players who will be siding with either ZeRo or Ally. While he was mentioned in the trailer, Ranai will not be able to attend the event, due to the difficulty getting time off work to attend locals, let alone majors like this. There are a couple of players missing like Dream Team’s ANTi so we may see a secret third faction step into the fray and add a little chaos to the proceedings.
While I was initially skeptical of the whole Civil War talk on Twitter as a way of creating false hype, I cannot deny that this tournament will be incredible to watch. It will act as Evo round 2 in a way, with 2GGaming being able to run the tournament exactly how they want without the problem of other games conflicting with the schedule. With world class talent coming to support either ZeRo or Ally, it will be a gem of an event no matter what. There isn’t a hard and fast date for the Civil War just yet but I imagine there will be more news coming from Super Smash Con in a few weeks.
