Aside from being a great footsie tool, parries in Street Fighter have often been the source of some decent option selects. Street Fighter V is no exception, with this new option select that has been discovered for Ryu.
As Andrew David Murphy demonstrates in the video below, Ryu can option select with his parry to beat out certain V-Reversals. The technique is similar to the anti-backdash option select players used in Street Fighter IV. By inputting the parry command after a string of jabs, Ryu can catch most V-Reversals with a parry. Additionally, with some adjustment, Ryu can also chase down other characters whose V-Reversals move them out of his way.
Now, jabs aren’t the only way into this option select. As MDZ jimmY demonstrates in their own video, Ryu can also set the option select up using his standing medium punch (as previously covered in our last Street Fighter V roundup).
Additionally, MDZ jimmY also shows how other parry-like V-Skills–such as Zangief’s–can also work with the option select. This likely means that Alex, who has a parry when his V-Trigger is active, can probably pull this off as well.
Only time will tell if these option selects become dominant tools for these characters. Capcom could always nerf these options. In the meantime, share your thoughts on them in the comments below.
