Canada Cup’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo Event Receives $500 Pot Bonus

We had previously reported that any game that hit a 50 player threshold at Canada Cup would receive a $500 pot bonus.  At press time, the closest game to that mark was none other than the grandfather of all modern fighting games, Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

The game previously hit 45 players at the last Canada Cup and this year, the attendance has grown. It has grown so much in fact, that it has hit the 50 player benchmark and thus receive Lap Chi Duong’s promised $500 pot bonus.

This tournament is shaping up to be of epic proportions. With ST legends such as Damdai, Mattsun, Shougatsu, Kusumondo and Justin Wong confirmed in attendance, and less than a month to get involved, this is turning into the biggest Super Turbo event since the last Tournament of Legends in 2014.

Canada Cup will be held at the Holiday Inn Airport in Toronto, Ontario on October 28th through the 30th, and can be registered for at their website.

Catch Up on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Top 8 from Glitch 2, Courtesy of VGBootCamp

While many people had their eyes glued to 2GGT: Abadango Saga last weekend, another big Smash 4 regional was happening in MD/VA. Hosted by VGBootCamp at Xanadu Games, the home of the biggest Smash 4 weekly in the world, Glitch 2 saw East Coast players come together to compete in various Smash 4 tournaments including singles, doubles, Customs and even low tier singles. Although some big names were competing over in the Esports Arena, there was no shortage of top level talent at Glitch 2, as seen through this top 8 highlight video.

Top 8 saw New York’s John Numbers putting in major work with Wii Fit Trainer, VGBC’s own Pink Fresh showing that his Bayonetta is still amazing even after the 1.1.6 nerf and Smash Studios’ Mr. E proving why he is the best Marth in the US. The great play is only made better by the great commentary provided by the Blastzone crew of Coney, EE and TKBreezy, adding some much needed humor and hype to the proceedings.

Novril Concludes His Killer Instinct Mini Guide Series with How to Maximize Your Combo Opportunities

After covering how Killer Instinct’s combo system works, it is time to put all the pieces together and learn how to maximize every combo opportunity. In this final episode of their mini guide to KI, Novril from the Chemical Lovers explains how players can eek out every bit of damage from their combos, as well as how to defend against max damage by recognizing common places to break.

In Killer Instinct, capitalizing on lockouts is the key to massive damage, as it gives you three seconds of uninterrupted combo time where you pile on the pain. Mixing between lights and mediums are a great way to bait a lockout, as it forces the opponent to either eat the damage from the small combo, or risk guessing wrong and watching their health bar evaporate. Sometimes waiting can be the best option, as seeing that slow heavy linker can give you the moment to break the combo and avoid the big damage cash out.

Throwing manuals into your combos can make that guessing game even harder but getting a counter breaker is the ultimate for building big damage. Like baiting a lockout, using an obviously telegraphed move like a Shadow Laser Sword is one way of getting a counter breaker, as your opponent will probably be hammering the breaker buttons to try and stop the combo. From a counter breaker, you get four seconds where you build no KV and can go ham with your most damaging attacks. Fishing for counter breakers can be dangerous though, as it does leave a player open if they guess wrong.
