Frank Yagami continues counting down his top 10 favorite fighting games by looking at the Tekken series

After a lengthy break, The Fighters Generation webmaster Frank Yagami is back to counting down his top 10 favorite fighting games, again, in no particular order. This time, Yagami takes a special look at the series he is perhaps known best for, given his reviews and myriad of match uploads: Tekken.

He’s a huge fan of the series since its initial installment, due to Namco’s penchant for creating a unique and diverse cast of characters, as well as continuously pushing the franchise foward in terms of animations, additional moves, and deeply complex mechanics. He notes that two titles from The King of the Iron Fist have made his list, with Tekken 5/Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection coming in at #6. After declaring it “The greatest experience I’ve ever had playing an arcade game, period,” due to living a few hours away from several outlets with thriving offline scenes–most notably Beachland Arcade–he praises the entry for coming at a time (2004-2005) when other fighting game developers didn’t have much going on in the way of new or memorable titles. He also brought up the innovative design choices of adding DualShock 2 ports to the cabinets, allowing players to bring their personal controllers from home to use, as well as being the first fighting game to use the card system that is now commonplace in Japanese Arcades, allowing players to keep track of their personal stats, as well as their customized characters. After finally touching upon Dark Resurrection‘s online component, as well as his little-known 1st-place victory at CEO 2010, Yagami moves on to an Honorable Mention that didn’t make his list: Tekken 6.

Though he praises the Bound System and the game’s detailed character models (that are even superior to its successor, Tekken Tag Tournament 2) he notes it missed the bar, due to the lack of a widespread arcade release in North America. Arcades were dying out in this country, and the cabinet being too expensive for most remaining arcade owners to afford–since it cost a whopping $10,000-$11,000.

Finally, Yagami moves on to the #5 title of his list, which is, of course, Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Though certainly an unforgiving game for newcomers, Yagami joyfully recalls the sheer amount of creativity the game allows in terms of combos, as well as the Tag System and massive roster size–though he admits he’s ready to return to 1V1 in Tekken 7.

You can catch the full video below–which is certainly a great watch for any and all Tekken fans, especially if you were around the community in those days.

You can check his other vlogs, which include Samurai Shodown 2 & Street Fighter Alpha 3, as well as Garou: Mark of the Wolves, here and here.

As we gear up for the release of Tekken 7, feel free to share some of your favorite Tekken memories and franchise entries in the comments below!

Wavedash Games reveal their next fighter, the hired gun Raymer

Following teases both in April and earlier this month, Wavedash Games have released some more information about the next character coming to their platform fighter. Named Raymer, this hired gun uses his dual pistols to “force opponents to play on his terms.” As you can guess from his chosen weapons, Raymer will be a zoning character who I imagine will frustrate his opponents with a constant barrage of projectiles, before closing the gap to finish them off.

According to his character description, he has a “disdain for less talented fighters,” with his zoning no doubt exhibiting how Raymer likes to “play with his food” before finishing them off. With his blonde hair and clear high opinion of himself, I can’t help but feel Raymer is inspired by TSM|Leffen, similar to how Kidd is inspired by C9|Mango. There will no doubt be some catty character interactions between these two fighters in the full game.

Again, still no footage of Raymer in action just yet, but expect him to feature in the long-awaited gameplay reveal of Wavedash’s project later in the summer. If they could unveil a game title at the same time, that’d be great.
