Dan Salvato releases the Universal Controller Fix for Super Smash Bros. Melee

Debates about controllers and controller legality have really flared up over the past few months in the Melee community, thanks to projects like the Smash Box, the B0XX and the lesser known Smash Stick coming onto the scene. While the jury is still out on legalizing Box-like controllers or specific hardware mods, 20XX:TE creator Dan Salvato and other top Melee modders has been hard at work creating a software update to solve some pertinent controller problems.

If you aren’t aware, certain GameCube controllers are able to perform techniques like shield-drops and dash backs with greater consistency, thanks to a specific controller malfunction. It’s luck of the draw as to whether your controller has these malfunctions, so players will horde these controllers whenever they find one. Having to rely on such a specific hardware fault — which cannot be readily identified — is pretty ludicrous, so this group of Melee modders has created a special codeset to make it so all controllers can consistently perform these techniques.

Called the Universal Controller Fix, this mod makes so all controllers can shield drop or dash back with the same consistency as these rare malfunctioning controllers. The techniques in question are not easier to perform with this mod, nor does it change their required input; it just makes it so there isn’t a random chance you may fail when you try to do a dash back for example.

The UCF is available for download from this link and it is fully compatible with Dolphin, meaning netplay monsters can start using it straight away. Much like 20XX:TE, there are also plans for special memory cards which will come bundled with the UCF as standard.

As it has been developed in partnership with modders and specific Melee TOs, Shine 2017 will use the UCF on all tournament setups. You will be able to tell via a special icon on the character select screen, and there are plans to sell 20XX:TE memory cards with UCF bundled in at Shine 2017.

Fantasy Strike returns for a second free weekend, August 11-13, 2017

Once again, you can try out Sirlin Games’ in-development fighter for free this weekend.

David Sirlin’s fighting game project Fantasy Strike held a free access weekend a couple of weeks ago, letting players get some hands-on time with the in-development title. This weekend, we get another chance: a second free weekend will be held, starting at 11:00 AM PDT on August 11th, and ending at 11:59 PM August 14th.

The pre-alpha build you can try out this weekend will feature eight playable fighters, and four stages. Online quick match play will be supported, including cross-play between PC and Mac gamers. A local versus mode, a full-featured training mode, and an arcade mode will also all be available in this preview. It includes several changes since the last free weekend event, including faster pacing, a dedicated button for throwing, smoother online play (using GGPO networking), balance changes, and graphical improvements. You can download your free weekend build here!

Fantasy Strike is currently running a crowdfunding effort on Fig; as the game in in a pre-alpha state, remember that content and features are still in development in the free weekend build.

X-Kira discovers classic Cammy and Urien stages, and more in new Street Fighter V datamining results

The hits just seem to keep on coming from data miner X-Kira. Hot off the heels of discovering references and code for the return of the classic barrel bonus stage, X-Kira has discovered even more new stages for the game, that could possibly be heading to the game as early as the remainder of Season 2.

The arenas included are Cammy’s classic Super Street Fighter II stage, “Lichtenstein Castle,” as well as Urien’s Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike stage, “Olmec Ruins.” Both of these will contain remixes of their original stage themes. Kira’s also discovered stages for Rainbow Mika, “The Ring,” F.A.N.G’s “Nguuaho Palace,” seemingly based off of the backgrounds seen in the pair’s official SFV artwork, and the Capcom Wrestling Association (CWA) Ring seen in A Shadow Falls. He believes these could all be released before the end of Season 2, but of course can’t confirm that claim.

X-Kira also mentions the presence of an “Ayutthaya Ruins” stage, set to be the first one released during Season 3. Located in Thailand, this could perhaps be an indication that Sagat will be making his grand return as the first of six more characters in the 2018 Character Pass, likely to be announced at PlayStation Experience following the conclusion of Capcom Cup. With a Classic Ibuki stage mentioned in one of his previous reports, this lends even more credence to the idea that the much-longed-for Arcade Mode, which is fully functioning in the game’s current code, could be coming to players soon.

You can see more information, as well as some concepts of these upcoming stages on X-Kira’s Facebook page. Usual reminder: we don’t know for sure if any of this content is going to be released to the public, or when, until confirmed by Capcom.

Are you excited about this new content potentially coming to Street Fighter V in the future? Are there any other classic stages from older games you’d like to see fully remastered and reimagined in SFV? Tell us how you feel in the comments below.
