The SRK Rollback: Best of September 15-21, 2017

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news — and our favorite SRK articles — from September 15 to September 21, 2017!

Zavian “mushin_Z” Sildra, Editor-in-Chief:

UDON publishing a hardcover Street Fighter novel, “Where Strength Lies”; features art by Yusuke Murata

Depending on execution, a Street Fighter novel could prove to be a great success or a tacky flop — or a combination of the two. I’m looking forward to seeing how it actually turns out.

Frame 2:
noctis
Square Enix officially reveals Final Fantasy XV’s Noctis in TGS 2017 trailer for Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

The biggest surprise about the reveal of Noctis in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is how long it took for Square-Enix to actually confirm their current FF poster boy was coming to the game.

Frame 3:

Daigo Umehara and Armada discuss the perils of being a character specialist

Being in a near-constant state of character crisis between characters I’m familiar with, and higher-tier characters or new ones I want to learn, I relate to the simultaneous difficulty and appeal of character specialization!

Frame 4:

Monster Hunter, Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Venom are confirmed for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

With this announcement — plus prior confirmation of Black Panther and Sigma — we’ve got our first six DLC fighters for MvC:I. Too bad SFIII’s Gill didn’t actually make the cut though, as per rumor.

Frame 5:

Flying High bids farewell to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 with this compilation of hype moments

Out with the old, in with the new — but never forget the hype.

Frame 6:

A posting for “Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition” has been spotted on UK games retailer ShopTo

A slip, proving an upgrade to SFV is imminent? Or just an outright mistake? We may never know — at least not until Capcom announces something officially.

Sam “Trilby” Foxall, Assistant Editor:

Frame 1:
Yamcha DBFZYamcha, Tien and new character Android 21 are coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ

So long Trunks, I’ve got a new main. Alongside brand new character Android 21, OG Dragon Ball characters Tien and Yamcha are coming to DBFZ. I can’t wait for the Spirit Ball setups.

Frame 2:
Raiden-Injustice-2Raiden teleports into Injustice 2 this October; will have Black Lightning Premier Skin

Ayeeemamalay! The God of Thunder Raiden is coming to Injustice 2 next month, and he’s ready to zap some fools. Along with a Black Lightning Premier skin, Raiden now holds the title for the coolest super in Injustice 2.

Frame 3:

Pack your whetstones and Mega-Potions, as Capcom have finally revealed footage of the Monster Hunter in MvC:I. Fighting with a bow, greatsword and dual swords, this Hunter is coming to fight with quite the arsenal.

Extra Frame:
MvCI Battle for the Stones
Capcom’s Battle for the Stones: Evo champions and new challengers will face off in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

This invitational-slash-open tournament series should prove to be an exciting first run for Capcom’s new Versus title.

– The 10 Best Cancelled MMOs of All Time

MMOs are supposed to last forever, or as long as possible. EverQuest is nearing 20 years old, and the lesser known Meridian 59 is over two decades old. But due to circumstance, poor decisions, or otherwise, some of the best and most loved games in our genre don’t last nearly as long as they should. In today’s list we’re celebrating the very best of the games that have been cancelled, shut down, or outright murdered by poor decisions.

Get ready for CEOtaku 2017 with the smooth new opening theme: Take Your Time

Following in the footsteps of last year’s opening theme “Run It Back,” yuzuki has once again provided the opening theme for CEOtaku: “Take Your Time.” This year’s opening for the premier anime fighting game event is a jazzy number, with some assistance from Chiisana on vocals, lyrics by Geiky, and visuals by shunao and jooooon:

Like the theme? You can download it for yourself from yuzuki — and check out her other work, too — on Bandcamp! CEOtaku 2017 is on this weekend in Orlando, Florida.

DisplayLag tests Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite for input delay

One of the biggest concerns with any new fighting game these days is the amount of input delay the game may have. Certain games, such as Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 have launched with — compared to older titles on previous platforms — massive amounts of delay. While this has been adjusted in the former of the two, there’s still the fear of any new game having input latency, especially since it seems delay levels have gone up across the board these days.

With this in mind, DisplayLag has produced a video showing off their testing of Capcom’s recently-released Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. The good news is that the game isn’t plagued by the input delay that Street Fighter V had at launch; the average amount of delay that MvC:I has on PlayStation 4 is a manageable 6 frames of delay. This is seemingly in line with other modern fighting games, as both Injustice 2 and The King of Fighters XIV also have around the same amount of input delay, and is still lower than Tekken 7. More importantly, this is lower than what was recorded in the Story Demo from June.

Take note that the test below was conducted on the PlayStation 4 version, which is the tournament standard. Whether or not the PC version can have less delay when v-sync is turned off has not yet been tested.
