TEKKEN TRAINING: Electric Wind God Vids — Understanding Ling’s Art of Phoenix stance

SRK’s Electric Wind God Vids is back with another episode! We’ve just finished discussing Eddy’s Relax and Handstand stances. But that was just a warm up: we have yet to talk about one of the scariest low stances in all of Tekken, Ling Xiaoyu’s “Art of Phoenix” stance.

AOP combines the low evasive state of Eddy’s “Relax” with the odd frame data and push-out of his Handstand’s transitions. On top of that, Ling also has a built-in sidestep when she goes into AOP — so when you go searching for an answer to this state, you have to keep in mind range, speed, and hitbox level.

Battle for the Stones Finals streaming live from Anaheim, California

This weekend Capcom brings to you Battle for the Stones, a special Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite event where the rules are meant to be broken. Sixteen players will make up the bracket: the seven Marvel vs. Capcom 3 champions Viscant, Filipino Champ, Flocker, Justin Wong, Kane Blueriver, Chris G, and RyanLV; the six Infinite Stone Tournament qualifiers Sacktap (Space), Richard Nguyen (Soul), Kazunoko (Time), Cloud805 (Power), Teemo (Mind) and Brian Kasugano (Reality); and three online qualifier winners Alioune, Moise and Stealth.

The twist of the Battle for the Stones are the Infinity Stones; which grant the wielders the ability to bend tournament rules into their favor. Losing a match while holding a stone will pass it to the winner. The Infinity Stones can only be used one time per stone bear, and a player cannot use two stones within a single set.

  • Space Stone – Allows the Stone Bearer to swap their position in the bracket, and face a different opponent! The position must be in an equal place in the tournament.
  • Soul Stone – Allows the Stone Bearer to erase one of their losses in a 3 out of 5 set.
  • Time Stone – Allows the Stone Bearer to cease the flow of time, enabling them to negate the use of an opponent’s Stone Bearer power any time during the tournament for one match!
  • Power Stone – Allows for the Stone Bearer to land the first hit in a match, giving them a guaranteed life advantage over their opponent by executing the first combo of a match.
  • Mind Stone – Allows the Stone Bearer to control their opponent’s mind by choosing both of their characters and Infinity Stone.
  • Reality Stone – Grants the Stone Bearer the ability to alter reality by swapping three button functions in their opponent’s control configuration.

Who will claim the six stones and the Infinity Gauntlet trophy? Watch the battle go down on the Battle for the Stone channel on Twitch and follow the brackets live on Smash.gg.

Umineko: Golden Fantasia is on Steam for the first time — and in English

Golden Fantasia fans can finally rejoice, as the Japanese fighting game based off a light novel series is making its way to the international market. While there were previous entries in the series, Umineko: Golden Fantasia is the first title that’s on Steam — in English — and with improved, rollback-based network gameplay.

Umineko: Golden Fantasia is anime tag fighting game with a Victorian aesthetic. The tag gameplay is a bit more interlinked than in other games; the two chosen fighters share their healthbar, but there’s still recoverable “red health.” The SP Gauge is used for a variety of tagging moves, which have specific, strategic purposes, either aiding in defense or offense. The main mechanic is called Metaworld, which is an Overdrive of sorts; a boosted state unique to each character. However, this state can’t be shared by the opponent, and what’s more, they can start an “Argument” to stop the Metaworld and incur their own — this can go back and forth until players run out of SP.

This release includes the Cross expansion from the Japanese version and a translated Story Mode.

Check out Umineko: Golden Fantasia on Steam, launching today, December 8th. For a limited time, there’s a 20% launch discount, putting the price at $19.99.

If you’re out and about in the fighting game scene, you probably have heard of Discord; here’s the link to the Umineko Discord.

– Will Competitive Gaming Take Away Our Single Player Fun?

MMOs have always been a ground for creativity. All of the competitive games you see today: SMITE, Overwatch, League of Legends, and so forth have their roots in MMORPGs. This style of game has now become an esport and more investors are getting involved each year. You hear stories of EA shutting down studios over single player games, and begin to ask, are my solo adventures coming to an end?
