The SRK Rollback: Best of August 10-16, 2018
Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news — and our favorite SRK articles — from August 10 to August 16, 2018!
Zavian “mushin_Z” Sildra, Editor-in-Chief:
Evo 2018 was chock-full of fantastic moments, the top five only scratches the surface of all the great stuff that was going on!
Frame 2:
Shoryuken at Evo 2018: Hands-on with the Victrix Pro FS aluminum-body arcade stick
What is it about aluminum that just makes arcade sticks look so good?
Frame 3:
Sound designer Mike Thal analyzes Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite’s game audio
Cut the salt back a minute — this is not an autopsy of a failed game, but rather a detailed look at design choices directly affect our perception of a game.
Speaking of design choices: if three years into a game’s run the players are still asking for the same fixes, that might mean a developer should consider addressing those concerns…
Frame 5:
Rising Up: Sagat bread-and-butter combo guide — Punishes, confirm combos, juggles, & more
… But hey, we finally have Sagat, and Sagat is pretty cool.

Frame 1:
Shovel Knight digs his way into Rivals of Aether
I don’t know how tacky it is to link to my own Twitter, so here, for prosperity sake, is what I wrote in March: “The year is 2030, Shovel Knight is in every fighting game, TV show, book, restaurant. Our economy is Shovel Knight. I am Shovel Knight, and so are you.”
Frame 2:
dantarion graphs PC Fighting game player retention examined on Steam platform
dantarion’s study is fascinating, but it also just blows me away that these numbers are now “small” in some people’s eyes. My arcade-goer reflex was to respond “I was lucky if someone else showed up to the arcade that day.”
Frame 3:
2-Hour Tekken 7 master class teaches the fundamentals of the sword-wielding cephalopod, Yoshimitsu
That Blasted Salami’s character breakdowns are easily the toppest of top tier productions in our community.
Cooperation Cup is the longest-running best argument to play any particular title in the FGC. Every community can learn something from this incredible event. I don’t even like 3S and am glued to it every year.
Frame 5:
The NEO GEO World Tour Finals approaches on August 25th
Speaking of great tournaments — I have high hopes that the world finals will cap off the NGWT well. I would love for more companies to support older titles the way SNK has here.
Catch up on what you may have missed in our prior SRK Rollback compilations.

Unshō Ishizuka, voice actor for many anime and fighting game characters, has passed away
One of Japan’s most storied voice actors has just passed away. Unshō Ishizuka (born Yukinori Ishizuka), who voiced a number of well known roles — including some iconic fighting game characters — had been under medical care before finally succumbing to esophagus cancer at age 68.
Fighting game fans will most likely recognize Ishizuka for being the voice of Tekken‘s Heihachi Mishima in recent games (including Tekken 7), replacing Daisuke Gōri (who himself passed away back in 2010), as well as Dead or Alive‘s Brad Wong. He was also the voice of Guile during the early 2000s, voicing the character in Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Capcom Fighting Jam.
Of course, as part of his work as a voice actor in anime, he did the voices for his characters in the fighting games for franchises such as Mister Satan from Dragon Ball, Zabuza Momochi from Naruto (both roles also inherited from the late Daisuke Gōri), as well as the elderly Joeseph Joestar from JoJo’s Bizare Adventure. Additionally, he also voiced Street Fighter’s Blanka in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie from 1994, and Virtua Fighter‘s Wolf Hawkfield in the series’ anime adaptation from 1995, and of course Tekken‘s Heihachi Mishima in Tekken: Blood Vengeance from 2011.
The loss of this actor that has brought his touch to so many anime and game properties — also including Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop, and Pokémon’s Professor Oak — will be sorely felt. He will be missed.

Omen of Sorrow set to release on November 6th, 2018
The horror-themed fighting game is flying your way this fall
From Chilean developer, AOne Games and Dutch publisher Sodesco comes a fighting game title that has circled major tournaments for the past year. Omen of Sorrow takes the horror genre and brings it to new heights, with twelve characters based on lore from popular horror stories and timeless myths. An official trailer for the game was released on August 16th, announcing the game’s upcoming release on November 6th, 2018.
The trailer also revealed an emphasis on single-player content, with a total of 36 solo battles for players to enjoy and unlockables like concept art. There will also be an Arcade Mode, Survival Mode, and Tutorial Mode. In addition to standard online matches, Custom Rule Matches will also be available for players to set their own rules. Keep a weather eye on the horizon for this new, independent fighting game — but best not play it under the full moon.
