See the impact of Street Fighter’s Chun-Li on the video game industry in this Just Frame video

Chun-Li is unmistakably the First Lady of Fighting Games. While often imitated by various developers, few have come close to duplicating what made her unique in the landscape of gaming.

While many know how iconic not only her colors and dress is, many yet don’t understand how early development wanted her to have a shorter life bar than her male counterparts. Trivia like this is touched upon in the video below, as well as the legacy she has created within the video game industry.

SoulCalibur VI sales trail behind II’s & IV’s; Game figures 6th on October’s best-selling list

As October rolled into November, the NPD (which tracks e-commerce sales) released numbers on video game sales for that month. For us fighting game fans, the monumental release in October was, of course, SoulCalibur VI. Since the series awakens after six years, it’s certainly worth a look to see how the game is performing in the market.

Here is the list of the top ten best-selling games of October 2018:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII**
  2. Red Dead Redemption II
  3. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
  4. NBA 2K19
  5. Super Mario Party*
  6. SoulCalibur VI
  7. FIFA 19**
  8. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  9. Madden NFL 19**
  10. WWE 2K19

*Does not include digital sales.
**Does not include PC digital sales.

It’s not surprising to see big blockbusters like Call of Duty and Red Dead Redemption II figuring at the top; the Souls game earned a respectable sixth place.

SoulCalibur VI debuts as the sixth best-selling game of October,” said Mat Piscatella, an NPD analyst, in VentureBeat’s piece. “SoulCalibur VI achieved the third highest launch month dollar sales for the franchise in tracked history, trailing only SoulCalibur IV and SoulCalibur II.”

While the sales don’t measure up to II’s, it’s important to remember that game launched on three major consoles at the time; though SCVI is multiplatform as well, many gamers own a console and a PC as well. This October was certainly a crowded launch, so upcoming SoulCalibur VI DLC could spike up sales again.

Bandai Namco is surely constantly evaluating the game’s performance in the market, which could affect their future support for the product. We’ll have to wait and see how much effort they plan to put into it; for now, we know that more patches and DLC characters on their way in the future.

PB Geki discusses how to turn Vega into a true Scarlet Terror in Season 4 of Street Fighter V

Vega has long been a source of ire for his dedicated mains in Street Fighter V. Long gone are the days of Super Street Fighter II Turbo, where the character could do virtually anything he wanted. In Street Fighter IV, he suffered near the lower mid tiers of the game, and Street Fighter V only saw it get worse.

PB Geki — citing many of his pushback and lower hitbox issues — has made his own wish list for the character. He also suggests some major changes to his command grabs, which offer little incentive for attempting over normal throws.

This option select lets Urien punish most V-Reversals in Street Fighter V

Option selects are some of the most powerful emergent tools in any fighting game. By abusing how a game’s command interpreter works, these allow a player to do one input that results in one of two options, depending on their opponent’s actions — in turn taking out the need to guess or read their opponent. Now, one such option select has seemingly been discovered for Urien in Street Fighter V. The option select in question allows him to easily deal with V-Reversals — one of the game’s most powerful defensive tools.

In a recent tweet, PR3DA shows how to do this option select. Here, they input standing fierce punch right before immediately holding down-back. Once the standing fierce is blocked or down has been charged long enough, they immediately input up-back and kick to perform Urien’s Violence Knee Drop.

Now, depending on what the opponent does, one of two things will happen. If the opponent simply blocks, the Violence Knee Drop will not come out. However, if they do a V-Reversal, said move will come out and punish it. Additionally, the move will also not come out if the initial standing fierce hits, allowing the player to continue with a combo.

This new option select should work well against characters whose V-Reversals immediately attack their opponents. However, it may leave Urien open to punishment against side switching V-Reversals, such as those of Rashid and Nash.

Capcom Cup 2018 Analysis: How Sako made me eat my words in two tournament wins

If there was ever any time that I felt absolutely wrong in my two years of writing these analysis articles, my thoughts on Naoto Sako would be that instance. While I was correct in my belief that he wouldn’t win Capcom Cup last year, my reasoning was way off kilter. Having said that his age was beginning to play a factor, and even mentioning him as just happy to make the cut for the event — I was completely silenced this year by his play.

Now, with his amazing #5 seed at Capcom Cup, I’m forced to highly re-evaluate my views on the execution god himself. Will the elder statesman of Capcom Cup be the victor this year?

sfv menat fighting chance

Age Is Just a Number

Last year I viewed his lack of major wins as a sign that age was catching up to him. I was dead wrong. While I may not have been far off in that he was not as focused last year as this year, he has proven unequivocally that his age has not become a detriment to his play.

This year saw him play to a tournament victory in Taiwan at TWFighter Major. He not only did this at the age of 39 years old — which many in esports, and even the FGC, have claimed to be too far past your prime to compete — but he did so without dropping a single game. Forget dropping sets and going into Losers Bracket, Sako hunted for goose eggs in every single set and got them…

Few people can accomplish this feat in their 20s, let alone approaching their 40s. Sako proved that when he is truly focused on his craft, he’s every bit as dangerous as these young upstarts who have begun to sweep through tournaments taking prize after prize. He has single-handedly shown that much like in traditional sports — where the best quarterbacks in football, or the best skaters in hockey can play nearing the 40s and still contribute to wins — age doesn’t matter as much as your talent and drive.

sfv menat promo art official

The Past is the Future

And the truth is, while much has been said of Street Fighter V’s lowered execution barrier, Sako has found a character that requires the highest amount of execution and has begun to do what he does best. While we can say that the lowered executional requirements in the game has given us a dearth of Sako-trademarked combos that are highly impractical for most people outside of himself to do, he has still managed to show his execution prowess in his play whenever possible.

Not only that, but his situational awareness of which combos are most optimal in any given circumstance is unparalleled. It’s magical just watching his mind work on any hit confirm to find the most optimized route that will lead to the most damage he can dole out. And given his great spacial awareness, using a character such as Menat with great range on any normal she throws just seems to work hand-in-hand with his play style.

So while yes, odds are we’ll never see Sako unleash an insane combo nobody has seen (or that nobody else can do) he has made up for it in his precision of converting combos.

Repeated Success

sfv_menat_poseFor anyone thinking that TWFighter was a fluke, few scoffers could be left at this point. Following up in a very short time with a top 8 finish at Esports Festival Hong Kong should’ve quelled any doubters. But if there were still detractors to the man’s abilities, he shut them up at SoCal Regionals, dispatching of everyone in his way, including a Xiaohai who was hot off of a top 8 appearance at DreamHack Montréal.

We would be remiss to mention a runner-up at Thaiger Uppercut, an online ranking win, and four more top 8s beyond this to add to the reasons why anyone not worried about Sako right now is a fool.

Unfamiliarity

I feel like right now, Sako’s biggest weakness is akin to Tokido’s: less popular characters in Asia tend to give him trouble. At Canada Cup, Sako fell to Canadian Sin and his M. Bison. Earlier than that, he lost his very first game at Tokyo Game Show to ROF’s Birdie, another player and character that Tokido nearly fell to at SEAM.

This seems to be a dramatic parallel between top Japanese players in that they have the tendency to sleep on the lesser known — only to be awoken too late, or just barely in time to save themselves.

But whereas Tokido will have to be prepared for that in the very first round, Sako may have a few rounds before a potential showdown against the reigning champion MenaRD and his Birdie, provided both remain in Winners Bracket for that long. So while he has more traditional opponents to worry about immediately, it could eventually come down to him stepping out of his comfort zone to face what he struggles with.

Final Thoughts

This could truly be Sako’s year. He could have the bracket fall perfectly, and he is peaking in Street Fighter V at just the right time to make it happen. Any critics — myself included — have eaten their words. He’s not washed up, and he will make people sweat if need be.

The problem could be if he gets thrown into Losers Bracket and has to sweat, or if the Winners Bracket doesn’t fall his way on the other matches surrounding him. Any upsets could destabilize his odds. But all told, this could be the year that the old guard sends the new kids to school.

Dragon Ball FighterZ’s upcoming update will bring Christmas-themed colors and avatars, Tenkaichi Budokai mode, and trophy rooms

A new update is set to come to Dragon Ball FighterZ on December 5. This new update is set to bring some holiday spirit into the game, while also adding a new mode.

Coming in the December 5 update are Christmas-themed lobby avatars and character colors. The former will have character avatars in the lobbies dressed in various Christmas-themed outfits. Specifically, Vegeta, Trunks, Tien, and Android 18 will be receiving Santa Claus (Mrs. Claus for 18) themed avatars, while Buu becomes a Snowman and Krillin dresses up as a reindeer (complete with red nose).

Color 14 on the other hand will be available in the in the Z-Capsules, are based on the colors red, green, white, and yellow (or gold where applicable).

In addition to these Christmas-themed items though comes a new mode: Tenkaichi Budokai. This is a new, 8-player online tournament mode which features special rulesets. The winners and runners-up in these tournaments can earn special trophies which they can then display in the new trophy rooms that are also coming as part of the update. The latter are based on certain locations from the Dragon Ball franchise and can be freely decorated by the player.

As stated above, all of this drops on December 5. In the meantime, check out these screenshots of them.

X-Kira’s latest round of datamining reveals more Resident Evil Crossover Costumes, playable NPCs coming to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

The Biohazard outbreak is spreading to even more of the World Warriors!

It was officially revealed earlier this week that we would be receiving a set of Resident Evil Crossover Costumes in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. The three attires included in the pack will see Cammy White don the iconic beret and S.T.A.R.S uniform of Jill Valentine, Kolin become a double agent with the attire of Ada Wong, and Urien continuing Albert Wesker’s quest for complete global saturation.

As previously reported, these attires, along with festive Holiday 2018 Christmas wear for the Season 3 quartet of Sakura, Blanka, Falke, and Cody, and Nash’s Cannon Spike attire (which is currently available though Menat’s Fighting Chance) were all reported by him. The Brazilian dataminer has continued to tease more potential upcoming content, noting that there will be even more Resident Evil Crossover Costumes on the way in 2019 that will see Ryu don the BSAA uniform of lead male protagonist Chris Redfield, Cody getting infected with the Golgotha Virus to resemble the pipe-carrying first G form of Dr. William Birkin, and the monstrous Abigail becoming even more terrifying with a Nemesis T-Type outfit. Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy attires were also mentioned through photos. This tie-in makes sense, as the Resident Evil 2 remake launches on January 25th, 2019. He also claims that Falke will receive a Crossover Costume of Regina from Dino Crisis. Furthermore, he notes that Shadow Lady will eventually appear to challenge us in Extra Battle as a third Crossover Costume for Chun-Li.

Next, X-Kira claims that Capcom will be implementing a new game mode that will allow us to battle with the NPC characters, such as the Shadaloo Dolls and Phantom Bison, as well as the enhanced CPU opponents from Extra Battle — like The Master Ryu, Ultra Heavyweight Champion Zangief, Shin Akuma, and Triggered Necalli — in Vs. CPU and Vs. Player matches. This certainly sounds like it could be a fun casual mode to enjoy with some friends.

The dataminer also claims that there will be a “double reveal” for Season 4, which will likely take place at next month’s Capcom Cup, and that “two Queens” will be joining the playable roster, and that “The Queen who all expect to be the first will be the last and the least expected will be the first. Double Queen.” He continues, saying that a “Tarot card will be one of the new moves,” seeming to hint at the potential arrival of Menat’s master Rose, who can be seen with a redesigned look in Menat’s Arcade ending, which X-Kira currently has as his profile picture. His banner also features a picture of Crimson Viper from Urien’s Character Story, implying that she may finally be joining the fray in Season 4. He also states that the Nostalgic Stages he posted about in the past are all still undergoing QA testing before an eventual release.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the dry spell of slow Fight Money acquisition could be coming to an end, as X-Kira claims that Capcom will be implementing a timer system that will reward you with increasing amounts of Fight Money the longer you play the game, in either offline or online modes, provided you stay logged into the CFN. You can see all of X-Kira’s Tweets below.

As always, take this information with a grain of salt, as none of it has been officially confirmed. However, with his ever-increasing great track record, it might be safe to keep some of this content in mind once Season 4 begins.
