Square-Enix’s Million Arthur: Arcana Blood gets two new characters, hands-on event this weekend

Square Enix’s other arcade fighting game, the in-development Million Arthur: Arcana Blood, recently gained two new additions to its cast of characters. In this week’s issue of Weekly Famitsu, the company revealed that Kyomu-gata Eternal Flame and Lise will be joining the game.

While Kyomu-gata Eternal Flame is a character from the Million Arthur mobile game franchise, Lise is actually a guest character from Square Enix’s Seiken Densetsu series (known as the Mana series in the west). The former will be voiced by Juri Nagatsuma, and the latter voiced by Mikako Komatsu.

In addition to the new characters, Square Enix also announced that the game will be playable at a hands-on event in Japan this weekend, on July 8-9.

VSFighting gets $20,000 pot bonus as part of the Injustice 2 Pro Series

Last May, Warner Bros. and ESL announced a new Championship Series for Injustice 2. As part of this, they launched the Injustice 2 Pro series — the first event of which was Combo Breaker in Chicago, IL. However, the Pro Series will not just involve tournaments in the United States, but will also involve events across the globe.

One of the first Injustice 2 Pro Series events outside the United States will be VSFighting in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Set to feature the UK’s finest Injustice 2 players, as a Pro Series Premier event, VSFighting will receive a $20,000 prize pool bonus. For those across the pond, this amounts to about £15,500.

Of course, Injustice 2 isn’t the only game with a big tournament at VSFighting. The event is also a Capcom Pro Tour Ranking event, as well as a Tekken World Tour master event, so expect to see top Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 players in attendance as well.

VSFighting takes place on August 12-13 at Millennium Point, Birmingham United Kingdom. Interested players can register at the official site.

New “Lunar Subterrane” stage coming to Dissidia Final Fantasy

Square Enix has been pretty consistent with adding new content to Dissidia Final Fantasy with their monthly updates to the arcade version of the game. This month is no different!

The upcoming update to Dissidia Final Fantasy will bring with it a new stage, the Lunar Subterrane. Those familiar with the franchise will recognize it the area as the final dungeon of Final Fantasy IV (originally released as Final Fantasy II in North America). For those wondering how the stage will look like in Dissidia Final Fantasy, Square Enix has released a trailer for it — that can be seen below.

The Lunar Subterrane will hit Dissidia Final Fantasy in arcades on July 12. Meanwhile, the home console version, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT hits PlayStation 4 early in 2018. It will also be playable at Square Enix’s booth at Evo 2017.

Evolution 2017 preview: SNK’s flagship franchise returns with The King of Fighters XIV

After a two-year hiatus, SNK’s The King of Fighters series returns to the Evo main stage once again with The King of Fighters XIV. However, the road to Evo 2017 has been rather bittersweet for the community. KOF XIV’s competitive following has, at least in the West, been rather more subdued compared to its predecessor — in spite of the fact that The King of Fighters XIV is, from a gameplay standpoint, arguably the best the series has been since the Ultimate Match version of KOF 2002.

kofxiv_geese_vs_ryo_750

Despite the smaller competitive scene, that doesn’t mean that the players’ passion for the game has diminished in the West. This is especially true in the series’ more traditional strongholds within Mexico, Latin America, as well as the United States. Familiar names dominate competitions in this side of the world, with players such as Arcade Shock’s Reynald Tacsuan, Ramon “Romance” Navarrete, Luis Cha, Eric “Juicebox” Albino, Team Spooky’s Josh “NerdJosh” Jodoin, Raphael “Laban” Ramos, Chris “Hellpockets” Fields, and more.

In addition to these are names more commonly associated with other games. While Evil Geniuses Christopher “NYChrisG” Gonzales competed in The King of Fighters XIII, he seems to have found more success in The King of Fighters XIV, with a recent top 8 finish at CEO 2017. Meanwhile, one of ChrisG’s rivals in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Black Eye’s Nicolas “Kane Blueriver” Gonzales has also done well in KOFXIV, actually qualifying for this year’s The King of Fighters XIV World Championship in Japan.

The King of Fighters XIV however has found more success as a competitive game outside of the West, specifically in China. During The King of Fighters XIV World Championship, most of the top 8 finalists were Chinese players. First and foremost among these is DouyuTV’s Zhoujun “Xiao Hai” Zheng, who arguable be the strongest KOFXIV player in the world at the moment. Another strong Chinese player is PandaTV’s Haojun “Dakou” Su. These two are joined by a host of other top Chinese players from teams such as DouyuTV, HuomaoTV, and PandaTV.

kofxiv_mai_750x400

Of course, other countries and regions have strong The King of Fighters XIV representation as well. Japanese player M’, who is arcade hardware company Sanwa Denshi’s first sponsored player, made a name for himself by winning The King of Fighters XIV World Championship. Meanwhile, Korea has also traditionally strong KOF scene, and Evo 2012 King of Fighters XIII champion Kwang-noh “MadKOF” Lee still remains a big threat, and could take it all again if he returns to Las Vegas [and it turns out that he is – Editor]. Meanwhile, Europe also has a strong The King of Fighters XIV scene, with players such as Frionel and Alioune Camara also having strong showings at The King of Fighters XIV World Championship.

All in all, despite the low turnout, the possibility of big name international competitors converging in Las Vegas make The King of Fighters XIV at Evo one of the hypest tournaments yet. The multi-national nature of the KOF competitions at Evo has always energized the crowd — raising the stakes by unifying spectators by country or nation of choice.  At times, KOF at Evo feels almost like a World Cup soccer game, where national pride is on the line. With this in mind, The King of Fighters XIV at Evo 2017 may yet show that it’s not the size of the community, but their passion that counts!

Evolution 2017 preview: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 returns for one final run at Evo

When the games for Evo 2017 were first announced earlier this year, there was one big omission that everyone noticed: for the first time in the tournament’s history, there was no Marvel vs. Capcom game in the lineup. Happily, the Evo 2017 Player’s Choice donation drive gave players and fans the chance to put a game back in. The community came out in force with an overwhelming response, raising over $70,000 for Make-a-Wish International, and getting UMvC3 back on the roster for Sunday.

In many ways, however, the story of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at Evo 2017 is bigger than just that of the game getting back in through the donation drive. With this likely being the last year that the game is at Evo, many players are looking to this one final chance to make a name for themselves in the game.

What really makes this special is the fact that, throughout the game’s seven-year history at Evo, no single player has won the tournament more than once. Unlike Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which was pretty much dominated by Justin Wong, every single Evo tournament for the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 series (both “vanilla” and Ultimate) has had a different winner.

Among these previous winners are a number of players considered to be part of the pantheon of “gods” of Marvel. These are players such as Splyce’s Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez, Job “Flocker” Figueroa, Evil Geniuses’ Christopher “NYChrisG” Gonzales, Black Eye’s Nicholas “Kane Blueriver” Gonzales, and of course Echo Fox’s Justin (“Marvelous”) Wong. Among these, there are players who have threatened to win more than once. FChamp had an amazing run in 2013, only to be stopped by Justin Wong in the finals. Similarly, KBR looked poised to win once again last year, before falling to ChrisG. Speaking of which, ChrisG has always threatened to reach the upper echelons of the tournament, only to fall short until his win last year. With these players having only one Evo win each, winning a second would cement their position atop the pantheon.

Aside from these however, there are other players, also considered as “gods” of the game who have yet to win at Evo.  Players such as Eduardo “PR Balrog” Perez or Panda Global’s Raynel “RayRay” Hidalgo. Both these players have had amazing runs at previous Evos, but have yet to take the top prize.

umvc3 srk

It’s not just the “gods” that are on the lookout for the win. There are a number of  top Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 players that are out to prove themselves as well. These are players like Vineeth “Apologyman” Meka, Daniel “Clockw0rk” Maniago, Abraham “GoldenBoyNeo” Sotelo, Armando “Angelic” Mejia, Cole “Flux” Tocci, Jan-Michael del Rio, Ryan “RyanLV” Romero, Jonathan “Cloud805” Morales, and more. These players have either had amazing runs at past Evos, or have been putting in some amazing performances in recent tournaments — and most would like nothing more than to reach the same level as the “gods” with an Evo 2017 win.

Their efforts have come on the back of a resurgence in interest in UMvC3, thanks to the current-generation re-releases, the spectre of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite on the horizon, and the Curleh Circuit. Many of the players listed above have gained a lot of momentum thanks to recent tournaments on and off the Curleh Circuit. Meanwhile, the re-releases of the game have brought about a wave of newly-discovered tactics and tools that players can use in competition.

All things considered, it seems that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 final year at Evo will be a big one. With the donation drive, as well as the champions vying for the chance to be the only two-time UMvC3 champion, the challengers looking to deny a them that while ascending to godhood, as well as the increasing level of competition in the game, everything is in place for a hype tournament this year. The Marvel vs. Capcom series has always been a part of makes Evo what it is, and as such it’s fitting that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 goes out with a bang.

Here’s how Pokkén Tournament DX compares graphically to the Wii U original

As most of you already know, Pokkén Tournament is getting an updated re-release for Nintendo Switch, Pokkén Tournament DX. This updated version brings with it new features such as 3v3 battles, as well as the extra characters from the arcade version that didn’t made it to the Wii U release.

Alongside these new additions, Pokkén Tournament DX also brings with it some graphical upgrades. Just how much have the game’s graphics improved? To find out, Digital Foundry did a comparison video where they took the footage from E3, and used that a basis for comparison against footage captured from the Wii U version.

As the video below demonstrates, the most obvious difference is that Pokkén Tournament DX now runs at a full 1280 x 720, compared to the 960 x 720 of the original. In addition to this, the Switch version also features better texture filtering, while consistently hitting its 60 FPS target. That said, like the original, the Switch version still lacks anti-aliasing.

Possible DLC characters datamined in The King of Fighters XIV

In April, SNK expanded The King of Fighters XIV with a number of new characters available as DLC. While many thought that this would be a one-time thing, it seems that SNK may be gearing up to update the game with even more characters.

This speculation comes from The King of Fighters XIV‘s PC version on Steam, specifically a few entries discovered on Steam datamining site SteamDB, as well as datamining performed on the game’s code itself. The SteamDB entries for the game list a number of as of yet unidentified DLC items. While it could be easy to just dismiss these as entries for cosmetic DLC, investigation into the game’s code by known dataminer X-Kira seems to indicate otherwise.

X-Kira has found entries for possible DLC characters in the game’s code. Some of these entries possibly hint at the return of veterans such as Oswald, Blue Mary, Shingo Yabuki, and Hinata. The other entries however seem to point to new characters such as “Ymd,” and “HDR.” Entries named “Van,” “Kangil,” “Sissel,” “Meiland,” and “Catalina” have also been found, however some players have pointed out that these may be entries for existing characters, such as Vanessa, Gang Il, Hein, Mian, and Zarina, since they’re not listed in the screenshots that X-Kira posted.

In addition to these characters, there also appear to be entries for new stages as well, as the total number of files for stages has 3 more than that which is actually in-game at the moment.

Take note that this does not mean that DLC characters (and stages), especially the ones mentioned, are coming. It’s entirely possible that these are just placeholders or incomplete assets, and SNK may or may not decide to use them to expand the game.

Learn to punish push block with this new Injustice 2 video

Push blocking is a good defensive tool available to Injustice 2 players. Timed right, it can be used to break out of a reset or a mixup and slow down an opponent’s offense.

As part of their new series of tutorials in preparation for Evo 2017, ETC Chile have released this video showing how to deal with push blocks. Specifically, the video showcases ways to punish push block attempts both in different situations — such as during a reset attempt, and also in the neutral. Mastering these should help players continue their pressure, and allow them to discourage their opponents from using push block!

Make your opponents fear the Green with these Swamp Thing combos for Injustice 2

Swamp Thing is generally considered to be one of the weaker characters in Injustice 2. That said, just because he isn’t considered “top tier” doesn’t mean that he can’t dish out some decent damage!

In this new combo video, Ronald Rogan demonstrates some combos that will make any player respect the protector of the Green. Included here are max damage meterless combos, interactable uses, damaging punishes, resets, and even some impractical (but stylish) combos.

Thanks to Raz0r for the tip.

Get a better view of The King of Fighters XIV’s moves with these slow motion hitbox videos

As some of you may already know, there’s a hitbox viewer available for The King of Fighters XIV: Steam Edition on PC. However, for some, simply seeing these in motion at regular speed may not be enough to fully understand them. For those players, Overheat’s GameTime has been putting out a series of videos showing the hitboxes in slow motion.

Players can now see how they shift from frame to frame, giving them a better idea of how they work. This can help demonstrate why certain moves whiff at certain points in time, and why they get beat out in others. Overheat’s GameTime currently has slow motion videos for Ralph, Nakoruru, Athena Asamiya, King, Iori, Kim Kaphwan, Ryo Sakazaki, Xanadu, Geese Howard, and Terry Bogard. You can check these out below.

In addition to this, their channel has also previously uploaded slow motion hitbox footage of other games, such as Street Fighter V.
