Justin Wong Shares His Top 15 Street Fighter V Players, in Response to Ryan Hart

Recently, we ran a story on Ryan Hart and his choice of the top 15 Street Fighter V players in Europe. As part of one of the many conversations stemming from this, Ryan asked Evil Geniuses’ Justin Wong to share his own list of the top 15 players in North America.

Unlike Ryan Hart, Justin Wong is not shy to add himself to his list–with as many tournament wins and Capcom Pro Tour points as he has, he can easily back that claim up. Most of the list is also unsurprising, with top players such as his EG teammates Ricki Ortiz and Kenneth “KBrad” Bradley, Team Liquid’s Du “NuckleDu” Dang, Chris Tatarian, Panda Global’s Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez, Joe “LI Joe” Ciaramelli, and more.

Check out Justin’s full list below and share your thoughts on it in the comments.

Ryan Hart Names His Top 15 Street Fighter V Players In Europe

Ryan Hart is arguably Europe’s most recognizable Street Fighter player. The “Prodigal Son” has multiple championships in multiple Street Fighter games and more than a few Guinness World Records to his name. As such, anything he says carries some weight within the community.

Recently, Hart has gone on Twitter with his list of who he thinks are the top 15 Street Fighter V players in Europe (including the Middle East). The list includes some familiar names such as Wilfried “Will2Pac” Jean-Baptiste, Arman “Phenom” Hanjani, Adel “BigBird” Anouche, and of course Evo 2014 champion Olivier “Luffy” Hay.

Quite surprising however is the fact that Hart has not included himself in his own list. This is an interesting omission considering that Hart is currently ranked #6 in on the European Capcom Pro Tour leaderboard–higher than a few of the names on his own list. According to Hart, this is because he doesn’t want to look “big headed” by including his name on his list. That said, more than a few other top players, including the global #2 ranked EG|Justin Wong have stated that he should belong on his own list.

You can check out Ryan Hart’s list below.

The Way King of Fighters XIV Handles SOCDs Gives Pad Players an Unfair Advantage

Cross-ups are a fundamental concept present in most 2D fighting games. The fact is that players need to learn to identify blocking direction–it’s an important skill to learn for any player.

The importance of cross-ups is one of the reasons why how a game handles simultaneous opposite cardinal directions (or SOCDs) can lead to some fundamental issues. If the SOCDs are handled wrong, then it could lead to devices that allow it–such as gamepads with both d-pad and analog input–having an unfair advantage by bypassing how the game is supposed to work.

In the case of the King of Fighters XIV, it seems that SOCDs may be quite problematic. As demonstrated in a video by barzorx, KOFXIV handles SOCDs by always giving priority to the back input. This means that no matter what side an attack comes from, a player hitting both left and right on their pad will end up blocking.

As the video explains, there are multiple ways to handle SOCDs. The best method would be ignoring both inputs and putting the character in neutral, followed by favoring the forward input (as Street Fighter V does) removing the ability to block. More importantly, favoring the back input is arguably the worst way to handle SOCDs precisely for the reasons shown in the video.

Interestingly enough, King of Fighters XIV planner Hidetoshi “Neo_G” Ishizawa was also involved in another game with SOCD issues: the original Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Here’s hoping that, just like in that game, the SOCD issue in King of Fighters XIV is eventually fixed.

Paradise Arcade Shop Is Bringing Back Toodle’s Multi-Console Cthulhu PCB for Arcade Sticks

These days, most players who need compatibility with multiple consoles are likely using a Brooks product, such as the Universal Fighting Board. However, dial back the clock a few years, and you’ll likely see them using something different: the Multi-Console Cthulhu.

Created by longtime Shoryuken forum poster Marcus “Toodles” Post, the MC Cthulhu brought with it not only compatibility with the (then Evo standard) PlayStation 3 and PC, but with some creative crimping, allowed for compatibility with a host of other consoles from generations past, including the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Sega’s Saturn and Dreamcast, and even older consoles such as the original Nintendo Entertainment System and Super NES.

Now, for those looking to use their modern arcade sticks to play games on older consoles, our friends over at Paradise Arcade Shop have partnered with Toodles to bring the MC Cthulhu back. Pre-orders for the new run of MC Cthulhus are now open at Paradise Arcade Shop. Take note that this is the same hardware and firmware that the PCB shipped with back in the day, meaning that it does not have compatibility with the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Expected ship date for this new batch of MC Cthulhus is October 15.

Punish V-Reversal Attempts With This Option Select in Street Fighter V

V-Reversals are an important tool that defending players can use to get out of pressure in Street Fighter V. As such, learning how to properly react to and punish them is an important thing that players need to learn in the game to keep up the offense.

Punishing V-Reversals however may be easier said than done, since players have to be actively looking out for them while attacking. Or do they? Taking inspiration from Razer’s Xian, KikoMasterRD has put together a couple of videos demonstrating some interesting option selects designed to punish V-Reversals.

The option selects demonstrated in the videos below both take advantage of the fact that V-Reversals cause a moment of screen freeze. Utilizing this, attacking characters can hide the input for a invincible reversal attack during while performing crouching light kicks as part of a blockstring.

Normally, crouching light kicks aren’t special cancelable so doing the move input won’t make them come out. However, when an opponent tries to V-Reversal during a frame trap sequence with this option select, the screen freeze causes the reversal to cancel out of the first crouching light kick, allowing it to punish the V-Reversal attempt.

The caveat with this is that the characters need to have an invincible reversal attack. This is fine for characters like Ryu, who’s medium punch Shoryuken is invincible, or Chun-Li, who can spend EX meter for an invincible EX Spinning Bird Kick.  However, some characters don’t have these same tools. For these characters, players can instead buffer their Critical Art to punish the V-Reversal instead. This may actually be more effective as it discourages players from attempting V-Reversals when their opponent has full meter.

Simplistic But Mentally Engaging: IFC Yipes Talks Street Fighter V on the Jump-In Podcast

Michael “IFC Yipes” Mendoza is one of the most entertaining players on the planet. Whether he’s on commentary or actually playing a game, his fast-talking style is one that players and viewers alike can’t help but love.

Now, while he’s mostly know for his involvement in competitive Marvel vs. Capcom games, his latest guest appearance on the Jump-In podcast with Kim1234 also focused on other games, specifically Street Fighter V.

On Capcom’s current mainline fighter, Yipes addresses the criticism of it not being flashy and being stale. On this, he states that while it may not be as flashy as other games (certainly not as flashy as the Marvel Vs. games Yipes is associated with), the style of play that Street Fighter V encourages is more mentally engaging.

Of course, this being Yipes, he also talks a bit about Marvel vs. Capcom 3, as well as the rivalries within the fighting game community.

You can check all of these out in the video below and make sure to watch the latest episode of The Jump-In Podcast, where top EU commentator Logan Sama sits down with K-Brad to discuss all things Street Fighter V.

Don’t Give Him Wings! Learn How to Punish F.A.N.G’s Critical Art with Every Character in Street Fighter V

As goofy as it looks, F.A.N.G’s Critical Art in Street Fighter V can be an annoying tool to deal with. The move happens to be his only invincible reversal, meaning that many F.A.N.G players will resort to using it on wake up.

For those having trouble dealing with the move, ElChakotay Andrich has put together a new video that shows how to properly punish F.A.N.G.’s Critical Art. The video, which you can watch below, shows how to properly avoid the poison bombs that he drops–while still being able to go in and punish F.A.N.G afterwards–for every character in the game, including upcoming DLC character Urien.

ZeRo Recognized By the Guinness Book of World Records for Longest Winning Streak in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

As competitive gaming grows, more and more players are getting their achievements recognized as world records: the Guinness Book of World Records has already recognized players such as Daigo Umehara and Ryan Hart for their own achievements, and now another player joins their ranks.

Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios from Team SoloMid has been noted in the Guinness World Records 2017 Gamer’s Edition for holding the longest winning streak in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. From November 2014 to October 2015, ZeRo won an total of 53 SSB4 tournaments in a row.

ZeRo has uploaded his own reaction to this news to his YouTube channel, in this video:

ZeRo’s winning streak in Super Smash Bros. cemented his place at the top of the competitive Super Smash Bros. for Wii U hierarchy, much in the same way that EG|Justin Wong’s own 5 year win streak in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 established him as a legend in that game.

We here at Shoryuken congratulate ZeRo on this achievement!
