Razer’s Xian Honored in Book Celebrating Singapore’s 50th Anniversary

With the amount of hype that fighting game tournaments and events can generate these days, it’s easy to forget that our community is still something of a niche market, even within the greater competitive gaming scene. This is why it’s always nice when a more mainstream news outlet pays attention to one of our own.

In a recent article, Channel NewsAsia shined a light on none other than Evolution 2013 champion Ho Kun Xian of Team Razer. The article in question looks at his efforts to change the impression that people have of professional fighting game players in his home nation of Singapore.

In the interview, Xian talks about how walking away as Street Fighter champion at Evolution 2013 has helped change the negative stigma against professional gamers in his country. Thanks to the success he’s found, Xian was recently included in the book Living the Singapore Story, which honors noteworthy Singaporeans as part of the nation’s 50th anniversary.

As for why they decided to include Xian in this important collection, Singapore National Library Board assistant director Frances Dorai said that they thought it would be “interesting” to feature someone who pursued a unique vocation. “[T]he fact that [Xian] has risen to the fore, and risen to the top of his game and made a name for himself – I think that in itself is something to celebrate.”

Rush Hour Smash Demonstrates What Ryu Can Do in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

While we know all about Ryu’s ability to make his special moves stronger in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS by using his traditional Street Fighter motions, all that means nothing if it can’t be applied in game. Thankfully, the folks over at Rush Hour Smash have put together this video demonstrating Ryu’s overall gameplay.

The video focuses mostly on combos and setups for Ryu. These include a combination of simple hit confirms from his crouching normals (just like in any Street Fighter game) and Focus crumple setups that would be at home in Street Fighter IV. A good number of the combos do pretty decent damage, with the longer ones topping out at over 60%.

Sanwa’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo Defeated Series Arcade Parts Coming Exclusively to Arcade Shock

Last year, Arcade Shock released a series of special Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike themed arcade buttons and balltops from Sanwa Denshi, and now they’re back with yet another series from the popular Japanese manufacturer.

The new parts, however, come with a bit of a twist by showcasing the defeat portraits of the Super Street Fighter II Turbo cast. Instead of the normally beautiful art they pull ideas from, each of theses balltops and push buttons come with the bruised and bloodied mugs of one of the world warriors. According to Arcade Shock, these parts represent the fact that life isn’t always about winning but also about the experience that we gain from defeat and the lessons that we learn from it.

Sanwa’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo Defeated series will be available for pre-order through Arcade Shock starting July 1, and will ship sometime after Evolution 2015. If you’ll be in attendance, you can pick them up straight from the company’s booth.

Team NINJA Pays Homage To the Deception Series With Their Latest Dead Or Alive 5 Last Round Costume Pack

Team NINJA has just released yet another DLC costume pack for Dead Or Alive 5 Last Round. Unlike previous packs though, this latest costume pack pays homage to another classic Tecmo series – Deception.

This isn’t the first time that Dead Or Alive has had Deception costumes – Helena Douglas had a costume based on Reina from Deception III in Dead Or Alive 2 an Dead Or Alive Ultimate. This time however, the costumes feature a wider range of characters from the series such as Millenia from Kagero: Deception 2, Allura from Trapt/Kagero II, Valgyrie from Deception IV, and many more. What’s more, similar to the Senran Kagura costume pack, these new Deception costumes feature clothing damage. Cloth rips and armor falls off when characters are hit with powerful blows.

The Deception costume pack for Dead Or Alive 5 Last Round is now available for the PlayStation 4 and XBox One versions of the game. In the meantime, check out the trailer for the costume pack below.

Mad Catz’ Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition S+ Returns

While Mad Catz is currently pushing their updated Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition 2, there are still a lot of players out there who are fans of their older Tournament Edition design. For them, the manufacturer has some great news.

In a recent tweet, Mad Catz’ Mark “MarkMan” Julio revealed that they will be bringing back the Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition S+. When it came out back in 2010, the Tournament Edition S+ represented the first major upgrade to the original Tournament Edition arcade stick. The design featured smaller sidewings and new full size art, and came out just in time for Street Fighter IV’s first major update.

The new Tournament Edition S+ comes with the same thinner sides but ditches the full panel art in favor of the smaller art and bezel combination as seen in the original Tournament Edition stick. Additionally, the stick also features the anti-slip coating feature in later variants of the original Tournament Edition line.

The first batch of red Tournament Edition S+ arcade sticks will release for the Xbox 360, which is still currently the console of choice for games such as Ultra Street Fighter IV. That said, MarkMan has confirmed that versions for other consoles will eventually be released later on.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Joins Steam’s Summer Sale

It’s that time of year again when the the temperatures are hot and the video game sales are even hotter thanks to Steam’s annual summer sale. We’ve already reported on the big discounts that are available for the King of Fighters series on the platform, and now those who prefer their fighting games in 3D have something to take advantage of as well.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round is currently on sale at a 40% discount, which means that the game is now available for only $23.99 instead of $39.99. Additionally, both the Fun Theme and Halloween Debut costume sets are subject to a 50% discount..

For anyone interested in picking the game up, this sale ends on June 22. Keep in mind that Steam titles typically go through several phases of sales, meaning Dead or Alive may become even cheaper as the promotion continues. We’ll be sure to keep you informed if that happens.

Capcom Pro Tour Shines a Light on Infexious After Strong FFM-Rumble #8 Performance

Capcom is trying something new for its Pro Tour player spotlights, shifting from their focus on known top players to any exciting competitors from the circuit’s various events.

The first person to receive such a highlight is Rize|Infexious, who created quite a stir at Germany’s FFM-Rumble #8 with his amazing Hugo play. Infexious fought hard all the way into the event’s top sixteen, his biggest moment coming when he eliminated Mad Catz’ Tokido in an amazing upset of a match.

In this spotlight article, Infexious talks about not just this match, but also provides some insight into Hugo’s matchup against Sagat (when he faced Demulant), talking about how the Mad Gear can keep the King of Muay Thai honest by utilizing Hugo’s strong pokes and generally playing a solid neutral game.

As for the match against Tokido, he gives credit to the fact that he was able to play the Japanese competitor in a casual set before the tournament. Aside from that, he also says that gaining a clutch win during what would have been Tokido’s match point round allowed him to compose himself and build some momentum towards winning the set.

Senran Kagura’s Homura Heading to Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel

EXAMU’s latest visual novel-based fighting game, Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel, will be coming to home consoles later this year. When it does, it will do so with at least one more character than it had in the arcade.

According to the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine, Homura from Marvelous Entertainment’s Senran Kagura series will be making an appearance as a guest character.

This isn’t the first time that Marvelous, who is publishing the console versions of the game, has pushed Senran Kagura related content onto a fighting game. Previously, as part of a deal with Tecmo Koei, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round saw special Senran Kagura-themed costumes add as part of a downloadable content pack. This is the first time, however, that an actual character from the series has been made playable in a fighting game.

Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel is currently set to launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 sometime later this year.

Check Out Footage of Street Fighter V’s New Mechanics and Current Roster

As most of you should know by now, Capcom recently showed off Street Fighter V at an exclusive event, during which members of the press were given a chance to get their hands dirty with a playable build of the game.

Our own Heidi “Zerochan” Kemps has already done an extensive write-up on Street Fighter V’s new systems and currently revealed cast based on her own time with it, but anyone hungry for more information and, perhaps more importantly, gameplay footage should definitely take a look at the video captured by other outlets.

Take note that, mostly due to their limited time with the game, the quality of play shown here is certainly not representative of high-level competition. That said, the videos can give us some insight into how the game is shaping up.

First up we have EGMNOW’s Mollie L. Patterson using Nash and Chun-Li to take on an unnamed Capcom representative. Some highlights include the use of Ryu’s charged fireball during V-Trigger as well as a glimpse at the mid-air version of Chun-Li’s Hyakuretsukyaku.

Next up, we have some footage from GameSpot. Here, we get a good look at some of Nash’s target combos and his V-Trigger teleport. We can also see use of M. Bison’s new Psycho Inferno, which looks to be a good way to catch jump-ins.

And finally, IGN shared straight up match footage between Nash and Ryu. Like the previous demonstrations, this should give you a nice, foundational look at the title’s new gameplay mechanics and some very basic combos for both characters.

Please bear in mind that this is an early Street Fighter V build and is not representative of what we’ll see at launch.
