NetherRealm Studios Gives a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Mortal Kombat X’s Online Faction Wars

This morning, NetherRealm Studios dropped a brand new trailer for Mortal Kombat X. Unlike the game’s other previews, however, this one goes behind the scenes with the development as they talk about some of the game’s playable modes.

Among all the features discussed, the one they give the most focus to is the game’s new online Faction War. In this mode, players will pick one of five armies to represent in the game. Every action, both performed alone and in multiplayer, will allow them to earn points for their faction. At the end of each week, the group with the most points wins and each member earns faction-specific rewards.

Of course, this isn’t all there is to Faction Wars. Hit up the trailer before to learn more about this and other modes in Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat X launches on April 14 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Teach Ken to Stop Throwing Out Errant Ultras in Ultra Street Fighter IV

For the most part, doing a raw Ultra is a bad idea in Ultra Street Fighter IV since a block or whiff can lead to you getting punished heavily. Case in point, this video by darcky, which demonstrates wayshow Ken’s Ultra 2, Guren Senpukyakyu, can be punished on block.

Apparently, characters can use a crouching kick to low profile under the powerful move on block, and then follow up with a jump-in combo to punish. As Ken’s Ultra 2 still pushes you back a large distance when guarded against, this is pretty significant. The low profile allows you to switch sides, and combined with the following combo, can actually help push your opponent into the corner.

Team NINJA’s Yosuke Hayashi and Yohei Shimbori Discuss Bringing Dead or Alive to PC, Handling Fanservice

doa5-lastround-einayane-622-crop

Over the past few months, we’ve heard a lot from former Team NINJA head honcho Tomonobu Itagaki regarding his thoughts on the current direction of Dead or Alive. However, those currently in charge of the franchise have been rather quiet – until now.

In an interview with MCV, Dead or Alive 5 producer Yosuke Hayashi and director Yohei Shimbori open up about the latest installment of the game, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round.  Here, they talk about how consumer interest in the series is bigger than ever and how fan demand resulted in the creation of a new version, with new stages and characters, for the next generation of consoles, instead of a simple port.

More importantly, they address talk about why, after almost two decades of staying only on consoles, they finally decided to bring the franchise over to PC. “The adoption rate of high-spec PCs and related peripheral devices has traditionally been lower than consoles,” Shimbori explained. “But these days, the perspective of PC gaming has changed drastically and we expect more fighting games will be released for PC users.”

He expressed some concern about modding on the PC version – something a company used to developing on consoles usually doesn’t have to worry about. “We have to deal with mod issues from an IP holder perspective. We would like to ask PC users to play our game in good moral and manner. Otherwise, we won’t be able to release a title for PC again.”

While some may see this as referring to any possible nudity hacks, this concern could also be directed towards modding the game to get free access to its downloadable content, additional revenue that Team NINJA certainly relies on to keep supporting for the series and its community.

They also took time to address the series’ often controversial approach to female representation. “Our characters, male and female alike, are created in a fantasy setting and are using extraordinary abilities to compete with each other in a clearly light-hearted, over-the-top universe,” said Hayashi. “Their abilities are very balanced and we want to present all of them as dynamic, strong, sexy and confident.” For Last Round, this likely refers to the fact that even the male characters are getting their share of fanservicey outfits.

He added that the game has to appeal to fans all over the world. “What is important to remember is that Dead or Alive is a series developed in Japan, where the interpretation of beauty is very different to that of Europe or the US. Our philosophy is to try and make a game that our fans can enjoy, both in the East and the West, and regardless of gender.”

Of course, this isn’t all that the duo talk about, you can read the rest of the interview over at MCV.

Show Your Opponents Some Love with Poison’s Red Focus Applications in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Red Focus is a mechanic that really helps people land big damage combos in Ultra Street Fighter IV. As such, having a character that can use it in a variety of ways can definitely be considered a boon.

IndoImran recently put together a brand new combo video for Poison that shows off how she can implement this useful mechanic into her gameplay. A majority of the combos shown in the video below are quite easy to pull off and dole out decent damage, making them incredibly useful for those who play with this character.

Check out the findings below and see what you can pick up for yourself.

Zidiane Explores Cerebella’s Battle Butt Points in Skullgirls Encore

One of the neat little easter eggs in Skullgirls Encore is how, as an homage to classic brawler Battletoads, Cerebella’s Battle Butt attack causes points to appear when used to knockout an opponent. What’s interesting about this is that the game actually allows you to get more than the usual 2,000 points, depending on how you use the move.

For those interested in this interesting system (solely for style of course, as the numbers are purely aesthetic), Zidiane recently released a video guide demonstrating situations where you can increase the amount of points you get out of Battle Butt.
