Challonge’s new format enables tournaments for Super Smash Bros. four and eight player last-man-standing modes

Platform fighters, such as the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, have the distinction from other fighting genres of allowing combat beyond the traditional 1-on-1 format. However, hosting tournaments for these hasn’t always been easy. Now, Challonge has announced a new format that can enable these tournaments.

The new “Free For All” format from Challonge was ostensibly designed to work with Battle Royale-type games such as Fortnite. However, the format also works with platform fighters’ last-man-standing modes, something that isn’t lost on Challonge. Challonge CEO Matt McIntyre has stated that, “We currently working with several Super Smash Brothers Ultimate tournament organizers to add formal competitions around the four player and eight player last-character-standing modes.”

Whether or not we’ll see these kinds of competitions become more common with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — and other platform fighters — is something that remains to be seen.

New Dragon Ball FighterZ trailer highlights all the additions in the recent patch

As you may know, Dragon Ball FighterZ recently received a patch, and Bandai Namco has now released a trailer highlighting all that has been added in the update.

Aside from the balance updates, the recent Dragon Ball FighterZ patch has also added some new content. These include the new FighterZ Tournament (or Tenkaichi Budokai mode in Japan), which allowed custom tournaments with unique rulesets — over 70 in fact. Supporting this is the Z Trophy room where players can show off the trophies they’ve won from these tournaments. Finally, the update also brings Christmas-themed lobby avatars and alternate colors that can be gained from Z Capsules.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is currently available on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Switch.

Some games on the PlayStation Classic will be PAL versions, including Tekken 3 and Battle Arena Toshinden

Recently, some news has come out regarding some of the game’s coming to Sony’s upcoming micro console, the PlayStation Classic. Specifically, nine of the games on the system will be the European (PAL) versions of the game.

Two of these nine games are the 3D fighters that help define the original PlayStation: Tekken 3 and Battle Arena Toshinden. With these games being the PAL versions, this means that both games will run at a 50hz refresh rate – slower than the 60hz standard used by NSTC regions.

With refresh rates tied to frame rates, this effectively means that these games will run slower than intended. This is especially bad for the aforementioned fighting games, especially Tekken 3. While Battle Arena Toshinden is more of a curiosity that hasn’t aged as well, Tekken 3 is considered one of the best installments of the series — one whose home version has never been re-released.

The other games affected by this are Cool Boarders 2Destruction DerbyGrand Theft AutoJumping Flash!Oddworld: Abe’s OddyseeResident Evil Director’s Cut, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six.

For anyone planning to get the PlayStation Classic, be reminded then that the above games may not play quite like you remember them (unless you’re from a PAL region!).

Street Fighter V for arcades gets a new name, new location tests in Japan

We’ve known for some time now that Capcom was finally bringing Street FighterV: Arcade Edition to actual arcades in Japan. Now, we’ve learned that the arcade port is getting a new title, and a new round of location testing.

Instead of just keeping the same name as the home versions (which already have “Arcade Edition” in the title), the arcade version of Street Fighter V will now be called Street Fighter V: Type Arcade. Alongside the announcement of the new name, Capcom has also announced a new round of location tests for this weekend.

The location tests are set to take place from November 30 to December 1 at arcades in Sendai, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Fukuoka. The specific arcades have been listed below.

As with the previous location test, this one will be using Taito Vewlix cabs with USB ports that will accept certain controllers. Specifically listed are the Razer Panthera, HORI Real Arcade Pro Hayabusa, and MadCatz Street Fighter V FightPad PRO.

Street Fighter V: Type Arcade is set to hit Japanese arcades on Taito’s NESiCAxLive system in 2019. In the meantime, check out these news screenshots of the game.

The patch notes for this Wednesday’s Dragon Ball FighterZ balance patch have been released and translated

As previously reported, Dragon Ball FighterZ is getting a balance update this Wednesday. Now, the notes for this new balance patch have been released.

For those interested in seeing what’s being changed in this new update, GREATFERNMAN has translated and compiled the change list in English. The patch itself contains a number of general changes and bug fixes. Additionally, it also adds the data for the “Tenkaichi Budokai” mode, Christmas capsules, and the Z Trophy Room.

As for the character specific changes, many of the expected nerfs have arrived, including adjustments to Adult Gohan, Bardock, and Kid Buu. That said, some characters who some players were expecting to get buffed didn’t really get any big changes.

You can check out GREATFERNMAN’s translation of the patch notes (with their own notes on them) below, or on Evernote.

SNK doubles down on SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy’s eccentricities in its latest trailer

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is arguably the most “eccentric” fighter ever to come out of the Osaka-based company. The game’s combination of platform fighter and air-dasher mechanics — alongside a heavy fan-service tilt — result in a product that might not be for everyone.

Hot on the heels of their latest DLC announcement, SNK has released a new trailer for the game that doubles down on its eccentricities. The trailer showcases the games characters and features, all while set to a hyper-kinetic J-Pop song sung by Sylvie Paula Paula’s voice actress.

Like the game, it’s not for everyone, but those who do enjoy it will likely enjoy the trailer below as well!

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is available now for PlayStation 4 and Switch.
