Humorous video gives us a scary look at the possible future of online fighting games

As the fighting game genre moves to the future, more than a few people have been wondering about how developers and publishers will find ways to make it more profitable for them. After all, both developing and maintaining these games post release isn’t cheap.

One method rears its ugly head in this humorous video from Fighter101.

Yes, the video above shows ads being played in between rounds. While this may sound preposterous, the way its presented — ads come in in a manner similar to how video ads are presented in YouTube and other similar video services — seems familiar enough that it does make for a scary proposition.

Here’s hoping that fighting game developers don’t resort to doing stuff like this in their games in the future.

Dr. Fatbody sets a new speedrun world record for Marvel vs. Capcom 2

Fighting games are a genre that most people don’t necessarily associate with speed running. The nature of the genre is more conducive to head to head competitive play than trying to beat the games as fast as possible. That said, there are still some people who do speedrun fighting games.

One such players is Cross Counter TV’s Dr. Fatbody who, aside from playing fighting games competitively, also does speedruns for many games. His latest run however mixes both, in the video below, he not only speedruns arcade mode in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but he also sets the world record for the game.

Prior to this, the world record for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 speedruns (tournament settings) was held by EC Zangief, himself another competitive player, at 8 minutes and 55 seconds. Dr. Fatbody beats that record by 44 seconds, clocking in at 8 minutes and 11 seconds.

Hiromi Tsuru, Bulma’s voice actress, has passed away

In the wake of other sad news, it seems that Dragon Ball fans have just been hit with even more tragic news. Hiromi Tsuru, the voice actress behind the voice of Bulma for the show’s entire run, has pass away.

Tsuru, age 57, was found unconscious inside her car along the Shuto Expressway in Tokyo. The car was stopped, and the actress was found strapped in with her seatbelt on. She was immediately brought to the hospital, however she was eventually pronounced dead.

No external wounds or signs of trauma were found on her. The official cause of death is said have been an aortic rupture — a rare occurrence, but lethal nonetheless.

As the voice of Bulma, Tsuru was involved in Bandai Namco’s upcoming fighting game Dragon Ball FighterZ, which — unless she has already recorded some lines for later episodes of the TV show Dragon Ball Super, now seems to be her last work. Interestingly enough, this isn’t her first fighting game with Namco, back in the ’90s, she also voiced Julia Chang in Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament. Her other fighting game work includes voicing Ukyo Kuonji in Ranma: Bakuretsu Rantō-Hen and Ranma 1/2: Chougi Rambuhen for the Super Famicom in Japan.

Unleash the Electric Wind God Fist with this Heihachi Mishima action figure from Storm Collectibles

Storm Collectibles has been slowly making a name for itself with their amazing action figures. The Hong Kong based company has done a bang up job with their various Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat action figures. Now, they’re moving into the world of Tekken with their latest action figure based on none other than Heihachi Mishima.

The 1:12 scale Heihachi Mishima figure from Storm Collectibles comes with all the articulation seen in other action figures from the company. In addition to this, the figure goes one step beyond other figures wearing similar martial arts dogi outfits, with extra texture work. The figure also comes with 3 interchangeable heads, 8 interchangeable palms, as well as special effects, including one for the Mishima’s signature Electric Wind God Fist, for various poses.

Pre-orders for Storm Collectible’s Heihachi Mishima action figure are open now. The figure itself is scheduled to hit stores sometime in the first quarter of 2018. In the meantime, check out some photos of the figure in the gallery below.

Misango and his masks join the fray as the newest fighter for ARMS

Nintendo’s unique stretchy-armed fighter/Dhalsim simulator ARMS has just received a new update. Version 4.0 of the game adds a new fighter, named Misango. The Mesoamerican-themed Misango comes with a unique mechanic: his special mask ability allows him to switch masks mid-battle to seemingly grant him specific buffs.

Along with a new fighter, comes a new stage; Misango’s stage is the appropriately-themed Temple Grounds.

Additionally, the update also adds three new Arms, including what seems to be one based on inflicting a poison status on an opponent.

Ultimate Gohan, Gotenks, and Kid Buu confirmed for Dragon Ball FighterZ

Three new Dragon Ball Z characters have been revealed for Dragon Ball FighterZ. The latest issue of V-Jump magazine has confirmed that adult or Ultimate Gohan, Gotenks, and Kid Buu will be joining Bandai Namco’s and Arc System Works’ 2D tag team fighter.

These three should be familiar to fans of the series, with them all playing important parts during the final story arc in Dragon Ball Z. In addition to these, the issue also gave some details regarding their appearances in the game.

Gotenks gets his “Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball” as his Level 3 Super, as well as his famous Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack. In the source material, he performs this volleyball attack with Piccolo but in game, he performs it with one of his team members. Kid Buu uses his Planet Burst for his Level 3 Super and he also has access to Piccolo’s stretchy arm grapple. Finally, in addition to being able to use an Ultimate Kamehameha, Ultimate Gohan is able to unlock his Mystic form — based on the amount of Super bars he has stocked up. The more Super bars he uses for this transformation, the more powerful it is. It’s unknown at this time if this power-up is temporary like Freeza’s Golden form, or whether his Mystic form lasts for the whole battle once activated.

In addition to these three characters, the issue also confirmed that Dragon Ball FighterZ will have an in-game shop where players can spend Zeni they earn in battle for colors and titles, as well as an arcade mode. The latter will apparently feature multiple routes that change depending on whether the player wins or loses their fights. The image of arcade mode has turned a few heads, as two of the icons on the map look like Beerus and the Universe 6 assassin, Hit. The Hit icon could possibly be Ginyu — as both of them have domed purple heads — but the other icon is a dead-ringer for Universe 7’s God of Destruction.
