Mortal Kombat X Season Pass Holders Get Tanya on June 2, Sold Separately on June 9

While he was content to speak in riddles just a few days ago, NetherRealm Studios’ Ed Boon has once again taken to Twitter to discuss upcoming Mortal Kombat X character Tanya. This time around, however, his details are much more specific: Kombat Pack owners will be able to play as the returning fighter starting next Tuesday, June 2, one week before she’s made available for separate purchase.

The title’s last update gave us a brief look at the devastating finishers Tanya brings to the table as well as confirming she will utilize her kobujutsu weaponry from Deception and Armageddon in some fashion, perhaps as one of her three variations.

Tanya’s arrival will also bring three new costumes to the game, classic digs for Sonya Blade, Kano, and Liu Kang based off their appearances in the very first Mortal Kombat.

The second such post-launch roster addition, Tanya will eventually be followed by the Predator and Tremor to complete Mortal Kombat X’s season pass.

BE|Kane Blueriver and iG|FullSchedule Matched Up for Marvel Exhibition at Midwest Championships 2015

mwc-kbrfullschedule-622

This year’s installment of Midwest Championships will feature a special Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 exhibition between The Black Eye’s Nicolas “Kane Blueriver” Gonzalez and Derrike “FullSchedule” Nunn of Team iG.

While these two players have yet to meet in tournament competition (to the best of my knowledge, at least), this first-to-ten set is sure to blow the roof off the tournament venue as Kane’s team of big bodies take on FullSchedule’s insane technical precision and unique arcade stick layout.

The exhibition will serve as the main event of PandaxGaming’s Ultra Fight Night festivities, and if previous showings are any indication, there’s sure to be even more craziness included in the lineup.

Midwest Championships 2015 is set to go down this weekend, May 29-30, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. More details can be found here.

Sony Investigating Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Compounding Problems on PlayStation 4

usfiv-hugoyang-622-crop

Sony is currently in the process of investigating the ever-growing list of problems with Ultra Street Fighter IV on PlayStation 4 according to Gio Corsi, the company’s Director of Third Party Production and Developer Relations.

One honestly has to wonder how nearly-invisible Sonic Booms made it past even the most lenient of testing or why this version was pushed so hard as the new competitive standard but, hey, at least this ends radio silence on the part of the developers involved.

In addition the aforementioned Guile buff, new details from Display Lag show that the input lag on PlayStation 3 has only been compounded in this current-generation offering, the exact opposite of what was boasted as a selling point during pre-launch promotions.

Corsi promises an update “soon.”

Ultra Street Fighter IV on PlayStation 4 Saddled with Higher Latency Than Previous Versions

By now, it’s no secret that Ultra Street Fighter IV hasn’t had the best of launches on PlayStation 4. As soon as the title dropped yesterday afternoon, fighting game communities were flooded with complaints regarding extremely slow menu navigation, buggy gameplay, and generally shoddy performance.

In order to get to the bottom of things, the folks over at Display Lag performed a quick latency test with this new release, and came to some rather stark conclusions. According to their research, Ultra Street Fighter IV averages about 133ms (~8 frames) of input delay, but can top out as high as 142ms (~8.5 frames). Looking at their running chart of previous experiments, this PlayStation 4 port is among the worst they’ve seen, and scrapes the bottom of thebarrel when held up against other fighters.

For comparison, the current competitive standard on Xbox 360 averages a latency of 85ms (~5.1 frames), while the PlayStation 3 version, which this port was supposed to have improved upon, averages 107ms (~6.4 frames). We here at Shoryuken cannot independently verify these findings, but in any case, it still shows the PlayStation 4 version did not correct the lag issues present on the previous Sony console.

So, what does this mean in the grand scheme of things? Like most intricate details in fighting games, casual players likely won’t notice any difference, but those on the competitive side of things are sure to feel this disparity quite heavily. This should also be pretty vindicating for those who claimed the port felt “off” without concrete figures to back it up.

Mortal Kombat X on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 May Have Been Delayed Again

mkx-johnnycagesonyablade-622-crop

According to new details from Kotaku, there’s a good possibility that the last-generation versions of Mortal Kombat X have been pushed back yet again. This news comes courtesy of multiple GameStop employees, who reportedly had the unfortunate job of notifying customers that the previous summer launch window has been changed to fall.

Their statements are backed up by stealth changes to the game’s listings on the retailer’s website; the ubiquitous release date of December 31 has replaced the previous placeholder of June 2.

This news comes just a couple of months after the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases were officially delayed from appearing at the same time as their counterparts in April.

After a botched Steam launch, it’s entirely possible High Voltage Software, the third-party studio enlisted by NetherRealm Studios to handle development outside the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, have been scrambling to correct the same issues in other versions. Continued work on PC may have also drawn their attention away from the home platforms.

In any case, this is far from surprising. NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon made it very clear during the early days of Mortal Kombat X promotion that they had very little to do with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 ports so that they could focus their attention on the versions that have become the competitive standard.

We have reached out to High Voltage for more insight on this matter, and will update this article if we hear back.

Arc System Works Announces Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-, Johnny Joining Playable Cast

Say what you want about Arc System Works, but they stay busy. New details from the developer have revealed they plan to release a follow-up to their hugely popular Guilty Gear Xrd subtitled -REVELATOR-. This upcoming installment is set to improve on the previous title with numerous balance adjustments and at least two new characters.

Two new characters?! Yep, you read that right. While one is still just a mysterious silhouette, the other should be a familiar face for longtime fans of the Guilty Gear franchise.

According to Famitsu, Jellyfish Pirate captain Johnny will make his playable debut in the Xrd series with REVELATOR. While few gameplay details have been provided, the images below show that he retains a few components of his fighting style from previous installments, namely the coin throws that contributed to his offensive options.

But wait, there’s more! REVELATOR will also introduce a brand new control scheme. Much like the alternate input options seen in the BlazBlue franchise, Stylish Mode will give players a chance to use simplified controls. While it won’t see any use in competitive play, this could be seen as a great way to acclimate newcomers to the game before throwing them into the deep end, so to speak.

Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- location tests are scheduled for the weekends of June 5 and 19 at arcades across Japan, so stay tuned for more details in the near future.

Erratic Sound Effects, Invisible Sonic Booms, and More; Take a Look at the Lighter Side of Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Poor PlayStation 4 Launch

When a new game releases, we here at Shoryuken like to gather up content and highlight what the community has found early on as a way to gauge how competition might shape up as it the title matures. Combos, frame traps, character strategy–you name it, and a player has likely released a video of their findings.

Ultra Street Fighter IV, however, is different, but not in the way you’d expect. Sure, some form of the game has existed for close to seven years now, but the recent PlayStation 4 port features a bevy of fantastic additions that are sure to put a smile on your face. And, no, I don’t mean new unblockable setups.

See, this version of Street Fighter IV was handled almost entirely by Other Ocean Interactive, a third-party studio who is perhaps best known within our little scene as the studio who released Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, which shipped with a variety of problems that had to be fixed by post-launch patching. As we reported earlier today, numerous community members took issue with Ultra Street Fighter IV on PlayStation 4 almost immediately, lambasting the title’s menu slowdown, random stuttering, and general input lag.

Those are annoying problems, no doubt, but one thing these quick impressions missed out on were all the hilarious glitches found as the day wore on. Sure, the argument could be made that some of these bugs have the possibility of negatively affecting competition, but with the launch this game has seen, all you can do at this point is sit back and laugh.

So, to bring some more joy to your Tuesday evening, here’s our Ultra Street Fighter IV on PlayStation 4 glitch roundup.

First up, we have a handful of sound glitches courtesy of stovenven. Their recorded footage raises some questions regarding the cast’s animal costumes; it appears as if whenever a fighter dons this wild attire, something screwy happens to the stage’s native sound effects. As you’ll see (hear?) in the videos below, Dudley now has the ability to steal car noises and dinosaur screeches, and Seth can even channel his inner howler monkey.

Oh, and the announcers also seems to forget his lines at times, though he may just harbor some sort of grudge against Rolento.

As if players like Liquid’s Du “Nuckledu” Dang and Kevin “Dieminion” Landon didn’t make the American soldier look strong enough, the folks behind this crazier-by-the-minute port gave Guile’s Sonic Boom a much-needed buff. “What kind of buff?” you may be asking yourself. “Is it faster? Does it do more damage? Did they shorten charge time?” Nope! Wrong, wrong, and wrong. What they did, dear reader, is render it nearly invisible.

I would like to take this time to preemptively congratulate both Nuckledu and Dieminion on their impressive first and second (or vice versa) finishes at Evo 2015.

And finally, nsb5024 has provided us an example of the aforementioned stuttering currently affecting Ultra Street Fighter IV on PlayStation 4. In the video below, Juri’s Senpusha appears to cause both her and Dan to enter a strange trance, bobbing their heads randomly, creating clones of themselves, and generally doing everything they can to make the title as unplayable as possible.

Since this is the only footage available at the moment, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what causes things to go to crap. Also, we also can’t confirm it happens outside of training mode. Still though, look at them go. Wow.

While Ultra Street Fighter IV on PlayStation 4 might not be the best fighting game around right now, I think we can all agree that it’s up there with the funniest, right? Feel free to send us more glitch footage through our tip line or let us know what other ridiculous bugs you’ve found in the comments below.

Decapre’s Scramble Teleports Possibly Nerfed in Ultra Street Fighter IV for PlayStation 4

In addition to unintended launch issues, Ultra Street Fighter IV may have also seen some stealth balancing on its way to PlayStation 4 according to gameplay footage shared by Versus Fighting TV’s Anis “Kahikusu” Hachemi.

As you can see in the video below, Decapre’s Scramble teleports have been dramatically slowed down, though less obvious is the fact that their range has also been shortened a bit.

At this point in time, it’s unknown if this is a side effect of the port’s overall issues or part of a much larger balance adjustment for the PlayStation 4 version. We have reached out to the developers for the final word, and will update should we hear back.
