Meet Aganos, Killer Instinct’s Towering War Golem

killerinstinctone-aganos-conceptWith February in full swing, Microsoft Studios’ Adam Isgreen has gone live with an early edition of the Killer Instinct textual stream to drop some early information on the title’s next character, Aganos.

Previously codenamed Golem, this hulking fighter certainly lives up to size expectations, standing taller than Glacius and occupying a ridiculous amount of real estate when compared with even the bulkiest characters the game has to offer.

Aganos’ gameplay will focus around a replenishable resource, readily visible on the character model, that it can use to launch projectiles, build walls, and gain armor. This mechanic will also change up movement and attacks depending on how much of the asset the golem possesses.

Other tools include a unique roll attack (with controllable bouncing), a Shadow move that hinders the opponent while still allowing actions by Aganos itself, and more.

More details on the character’s background can be found in the original post, along with hints on future characters and a preview of additional color palettes heading to Killer Instinct with the Aganos update. Gameplay footage will be made available during the developers’ next broadcast.

Glitch Turns Super Smash Bros. for 3DS Into a Tomato Lovers’ Paradise

That tomato is an incredibly versatile entity in the culinary world. Considered to be either a fruit or a vegetable depending on how it’s used, the plant inhabits a vast amount of cultural dishes all across the globe. Interestingly enough, that same flexibility can be found in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, though in a way the developers probably never intended.

In a recent video uploaded by Leron Tolmachev, the title’s Maxim Tomato can be seen taking the place of every other item due to an unexplained glitch. While most still function as intended, Assist Trophies and Pokéballs cause the game to crash to the home screen.

Smash Ball? Glowing tomato. Back Shield? Protective tomato. Steel Diver? A tomato that shoots mini-tomatoes.

Funny enough, he discovers over the course of his explanation that even character-specific items, like those spawned by Pac-Man’s neutral special, show up as tomatoes as well.

After having to cut the video short thanks to battery issues, Tolmachev followed up on a few questions in the comments, stating that these issues seem confined to this one 3DS and not the game cartridge itself, leading him to believe the problem lies within the handheld.

Have you encountered anything like this during your time with the game? Let us know in the comments.

Slow Down! Evo 2015’s Rules Don’t Reveal Anything About Mortal Kombat X

mkx-scorpionferratorr-622-crop

With Mortal Kombat X’s April release rapidly approaching, fans are looking for tidbits of unrevealed information anywhere they can, from mysterious retailer listings to the on-going comic book series. While many times these details end up being shoved into the light earlier than anticipated, some can be debunked with just a tiny bit of research.

Such is the case with a rumor that landed online this morning positing the upcoming title may include a mode that allowed players to pick a team of three characters, much like SNK Playmore’s King of Fighters series.

This speculation was fueled by, of all places, the official rules for this year’s Evolution Championship Series event. Funny enough, the bare minimum amount of digging shows that the same exact wording was used for King of Fighters XIII’s guidelines last year.

These reports caught the eye of hopeful contender Carl “Perfect Legend” White, who reached out to folks involved with the tournament (namely Tom “inkblot” Cannon, Tony “Pond3r” Cannon, and Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar) about whether or not this was legitimate. During this time, we also got in contact with Cuellar, who relayed to us a very similar answer to the one he gave White.

They were leftover rules from King of Fighters XIII. Nothing to see here!

Apex 2015 Salty Suite Highlights Evo 2014 Rematch, Classic Rivalries, and One Dominant Swede

While the venue issues that plagued Apex 2015 last weekend took up much of the early event coverage, Saturday’s Salty Suite exhibitions firmly placed the spotlight back on competition. These show matches provided a spectacle worthy of such a large-scale tournament, bringing together players from various Smash eras to prove they had what it took to overcome their opponents.

Apart from the rematch between Evo 2014 top eight participants MOR|Axe and GC|SilentWolf and the blast from the past pairing of Liquid|Ken and PC Chris, the marquee matchup was definitely between old-school competitor Liquid|Chillindude and relative newcomer Leffen.

With the release of a rather unfortunate diss track and handfuls of trashtalking in the months leading up to Apex, there was certainly no love lost between these two competitors. Monetary compensation was low, but the loser ran the risk of losing their right to use Fox’s default color in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Important stuff!

What followed, well…let’s say it wasn’t pretty for the returning veteran.

Link Jab Cancel Technique Allows for Infinites in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

As is the case with most video games, fighting game developers can never fully account for the resourcefulness of their respective communities. Try as they may, things will be discovered in their games that never even crossed their minds as soon as it lands in the hands of competitive players. You can almost always expect infinites, unblockable setups, and a wide array of other unintentional techniques to be sussed out by diehard players.

One such technique in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was recently outed by a player named Dan Salvato. He’s observed that, with a bit of executional finesse, you can cancel the first hit of Link’s jab string with a crouch in order to reuse that same attack continuously.

Of course, in a game such as Smash, this is only viable depending on the factors involved, including the character that’s being attacked, what percentage they are at, and more.

Salvato had various players check his work at Apex 2015 this past weekend, lending further credence to its usefulness. You’ll find a full demonstration and some explanation for why this works in the video below.

Northwest Majors Returns to Washington in April

nwm-7-banner-crop

One of the best things about the competitive season heating up again is eagerly awaiting news on some of the biggest tournaments of the year. While we already have a good idea of where majors like Evolution, Community Effort Orlando, NorCal Regionals, and more are going to land over the next few months, folks in Washington are ready to stake their claim in April with another installment of Northwest Majors.

This annual event has grown tremendously over the past few years, expanding from a tournament attended mostly by folks within the state and nearby regions like Northern California to a large-scale competition that sees players travel from across the United States and internationally to take part.

And this year looks to be no different. So far, the organizers have announced three incredibly talented Japanese competitors will be making the trip west: Ogawa, KoujiKOG, and Dogura. As masters of very different titles, they will be lending another level of intensity to the proceedings for hometown heroes looking to represent their turf.

At this point in time, sixteen games are pegged for inclusion at Northwest Majors 7, including favorites like Ultra Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and more. Room has been set aside for further additions, most notably Super Street Fighter II Turbo and King of Fighters XIII, but the organizers will need to see a major push from their respective communities for them to make it in.

Northwest Majors 7 is scheduled for April 24-27 at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington. Further information can be found here. Registration is currently open, so be sure to visit the official website and do so before it’s too late.

Apex 2015 Runner-Up Zidane Provides Overview for Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-‘s Leo Whitefang

While the Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- competition at Apex 2015 saw a fair amount of representation in terms of character usage, only one Leo player was able to crack the top sixteen: Zidane. His admirable play saw him make his way to grand finals, where he was able to reset the bracket on eventual champion ElvenShadow before bowing out at second place.

If you tuned into the tournament, saw Zidane’s Leo skills, and thought, “Yeah, that character seems fun!” you’re in luck. Biscuits recently uploaded a great overview of the Guilty Gear Xrd newcomer by the man himself. The video below, which clocks in at over half an hour long before the follow-up Q&A section, covers a ton of important information for budding Leo players.
