Killer Instinct Season 3 Now Available on Xbox One, PC

After closing out last year strong with season two and an exciting World Cup event, Microsoft and Iron Galaxy Studios are ready to present a third chapter in Killer Instinct’s rebooted legacy. Like previous seasons, players can expect to receive new characters and skins alongside a variety of balance changes and visual upgrades.

At on the onset, Killer Instinct’s cast expands with guest and classic characters: Battletoads and Halo receive some representation thanks to Rash and the Arbiter, respectively, while Kim Wu and Tusk return from previous outings. Each character comes with a default and retro outfit, which can be customized with various accessories and colors to help players stand apart from their fellow competitors.

Down the line, season three will see the vampiric Mira and past antagonist Gargos join the party in April and May, with Gears of War’s General RAAM, another unannounced character, and additional modes set to launch over the summer.

Due to Killer Instinct’s incremental releases, there are a variety of packages players can purchase to catch up. These have been detailed below, along with content and pricing. Check Out Some Early Alex Gameplay in Street Fighter V

I’m not going to try to explain how these things happen, but someone has made it so that Alex is playable in Street Fighter V. Many of his assets were added to the game in today’s update, and now we have a tiny bit of footage showing off the moves he has at his disposal.

Below, you’ll see Alex throwing, stomping, and more, just don’t blink.

Alex will be playable this Wednesday, March 30.

Killer Instinct Adds Mira in April, Gargos in May

Killer Instinct is set to swing into its third season of content tomorrow, adding four playable characters, upgrading the visuals, balancing the gameplay, and a whole lot more. As such, the developers dropped a hype launch trailer highlighting its release.

While much of the information detailed above has been known for some time, it does provide a few exciting extras. Vampiric newcomer Mira will join the game in April, while big bad Gargos returns in May. Two final fighters are expected to launch in both June and July.

The video also shares a brief glimpse of the new Shadow Lords mode, but details are still scarce. It appears to employ a sort of overworld map, where players can take part in missions involving the game’s various characters, but we’ll have to wait for official word to learn more.

Killer Instinct Season 3 launches for Xbox One and Windows 10 tomorrow, March 29.

More Costumes Discovered in Latest Street Fighter V Update

As we previously reported, Street Fighter V’s new update is now available to download. As such, this has opened the game’s upcoming content to datamining, and NeoGAF user Garrett Hawke spent some time digging through the update to find a few costumes the developers had hidden away.

The gallery below includes everything he’s discovered thus far, which includes a feathery addition to R. Mika’s wrestling wardrobe, body armor for Nash, a couple of…interesting looks for newcomer Alex, and more.

Street Fighter V’s Ver.1.02 Update is Live

Although the Street Fighter V servers are still down for planned maintenance, players can get ready for the moment they go live by downloading the latest patch right now.

Weighing in at over 6 GB, this update reportedly adds Alex to the character select screen (he still won’t be playable until tomorrow) and other such assets, like his official theme.

After grabbing the update, players can also take part in the new challenge mode. For a taste of what awaits, Karin’s trials are put on display by Keoma in the video below.

We’re currently in the process of downloading the patch ourselves, so stay tuned for any other goodies we might stumble upon.

Killer Instinct Ranked Netplay Will Require Passing a Performance Test on PC

While gaming consoles maintain parity between users, bringing a title to PC adds an infinite number of details to the development process. This is especially magnified when it comes to fighting games, where even the slightest dip in performance can mean the difference between winning or losing a close match.

With Killer Instinct just a day from arriving on PC, combat designer Adam “Keits” Heart recently dropped some new information on how ranked play will handle this issue for those worried about online competition. Apparently, jumping into ranked mode will require passing a performance test. If a player’s rig isn’t capable of maintaining 60 frames-per-second, they’ll be forced to make due with casual play in an effort to keep ranked as stable as possible.

Fighting games are typically less user-friendly than other genres, but the Killer Instinct developers have consistently updated their product to mitigate some of this stress. Previous additions include an improved heads-up display that provides more information on various aspects of gameplay and a combo assist mode with a simplified control scheme.

Street Fighter V Servers Going Offline for Additional Maintenance

Following up on measures taken last week, Capcom will again be taking the Street Fighter V servers offline for another round of maintenance. This period is expected to last from 10 AM PDT (1 PM EDT, 5 PM GMT) to 5 PM PDT (8 PM EDT, 12 AM GMT).

This news comes ahead of today’s update, which is expected to add challenges, expanded lobbies, a replay option for ranked and casual matches, and various gameplay adjustments to combat the growing presence of option selects. No word has been provided as to when players can expect this update to launch, but it’s looking as if it will land later in the day.

With the arrival of the game’s first downloadable character, Alex, and an early version of the in-game shop scheduled to land tomorrow, this scheduled maintenance is likely an effort to make sure they roll out as smoothly as possible. Keep your eyes on Twitter for future updates.

Here’s What Happens to NorCal Regionals 2016’s Automatic Capcom Cup Qualifier

As you may have already seen, Razer’s Seon-woo “Infiltration” Lee just won the Street Fighter V tournament at NorCal Regionals 2016, his second in as many weeks. But, since the Korean competitor already earned a Capcom Cup spot thanks to his performance at Final Round 19, many are confused as to what happens next. Does the reward drop to the runner-up, Mad Catz’ Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi, as it has in the past?

The system is actually a little more complicated than that this year, but it should save some headaches later on down the road. Capcom’s official ruling reads as follows:

If a player has already qualified for Capcom Cup and wins a Premier Event, it will open up an additional spot on the global leaderboards.Capcom Pro Tour

Unlike the new regional leaderboards, which are focused on specific areas of the world, the global leaderboard mentioned in the quote above is comprised of the eleven events Capcom has designated as premier destinations, like Final Round and NorCal Regionals.

Originally, the plan was to pull the eight highest-ranked players, excluding the outright qualifying champions, from this global leaderboard, but nine is the new total thanks Infiltration’s dominating performances. The full breakdown now looks something like this:

  • 10 players from Global Premier Events
  • 1 player from Evo 2016
  • 4 players from Regional Finals (1 from each event)
  • 8 players from regional leaderboards (top 2 from each region)
  • 9 players from the global leaderboard

Desk Combines 3 Street Fighter Titles in Latest Combo Video Mashup

Desk is known as an incredible combo video creator, and some of his finest work comes when he throws together two or more games to show similarities specific characters share in their various appearances. His latest shines a light on Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li, the only cast members to feature in Street Fighter V, Street Fighter IV, and Street Fighter III, and their common tools throughout all three games.

As you’ll see below, Desk’s impressive execution and editing skills combine to create a fascinating exhibition, showcasing the parallel facets of each character’s gameplay that have survived over the years. There’s even a bit of animation thrown in for good measure. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Street Fighter V ‘Death Pool’ Finalized at NorCal Regionals

As was previously reported, NorCal Regionals 2016 has taken a rather unique with late registration. Instead of closing it down altogether, the organizers have placed every at-the-door registrant for Street Fighter V, Ultra Street Fighter IV, and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in their own respective pools.

While at least 100 players were expected to register in this way, the number is a bit more modest at 52, but the density of skill is still pretty high. Notable players who will take part in this ‘death pool’ include Panda Global’s Filipino Champ, Evil Geniuses’ K-Brad, r/Kappa’s Poongko, Mad Catz’ Mago, Flipside Tactics’ Alucard, MOV, Marn, Chris Tatarian, Taekua, and iPeru.

With competition in this group set to kick off at 5 PM PDT, we wanted to pose a question to our readers: what do you think of this move? Do you agree? Disagree? We’ve included a quick poll below to gauge public opinion, so feel free to take part and visit our comments to provide your reasoning.
