Team Best From Now Returns with a Review of 1993’s Survival Arts

Survival Arts SMALL
Team Best From Now, which you may remember from their popular video showcasing the undeniable power of Ivan Ooze in the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers fighting game, recently made a triumphant return to the YouTube scene. The first video for their new channel dropped earlier this month and focuses on the old school fighting game Survival Arts.

Survival Arts hit the arcade scene back in 1993 and features an art style akin to early entries in the Mortal Kombat series. As such, characters are represented by digitized actors which look about as realistic as you’d expect. The eight playable characters range in style from the ninja, Hiryu, to the gun-toting police officer, Gunner, who bears a striking resemblance to a popular MK character. The developers also decided to take the gore route with the game, making sure that every successful blow showers the screen in good old-fashioned red pixels.

Oh, and there’s a skull above the match timer. Metal.

The game, published by Sammy, blends its undeniably MK-inspired visuals with the controls of Street Fighter II: it features six buttons in the standard Street Fighter layout, holding back blocks, and special moves, for the most part, involve SF-style inputs.

SurivalArtsFight1
SurvivalArtsFight2

The game itself seems to have some serious balancing issues. For example, Hiryu can jump an astonishing five additional times once airborne before returning to the ground. He also sports one of the slowest projectiles ever to make its way into a fighting game, which he can steer up and down if he so chooses. Combine these things with a completely invulnerable dash that goes through his opponent–similar to Ibuki’s in Street Fighter III–and you’ve got a rushdown/mix-up character that won’t let up until the job is done.

On the zoning side of the spectrum, Gunner can fire projectiles that, if executed with a Tiger Knee input, have almost no startup or recovery frames. Additionally, these instant-air projectiles hit for just shy of half a character’s health–move over Super Turbo Akuma.

You’ll find Team Best From Now’s video below, full of more information on this all but forgotten title as well as an overview for the in-game weapons that characters can use to beat each other silly.

If you’d like to see some matches, the guys from Team Best From Now uploaded an hour long set to give viewers an idea of how the game looks. Please note that the matches contain some NSFW language due to high levels of old school hype.

Olympic Gaming Turns Their Ultra Street Fighter IV Spotlight on Mexican Hakan Player DeadMaker

Hakan doesn’t get a lot of big stage attention. Sure, there are players out there like Infiltration who can play most of the roster at tournament level and occasionally whip out the olive oil, but when it comes to maining the Turkish wrestler no big names come to mind.

But just because we don’t often see high-level Hakan players on streams or at major events, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. In the newest addition to their long-running Spotlight series, the folks at Olympic Gaming caught up with Xbox Live’s #1 ranked Hakan, DeadMaker of Team Ground Zero, to show off the stylish side of this slippery grappler.

In the footage provided, DeadMaker lives up to his name as he faces off against top players like Wolfkrone, Evil Geniuses’ PR Balrog, Dieminion, and more, proving that he deserves his first place standing.

If you think you’ve witnessed every trick in Hakan’s repertoire, get ready to see something new! Perhaps the most impressive bits of tech, again and again, involve the masterful use of Ultra combos–and not just the command grab, but the anti-air as well.

Olympic Gaming also did a brief interview with DeadMaker which you can find in the video’s description. He discusses his history with Street Fighter IV, his local scene in Mexico, the origin of his gamer tag, and a whole lot more.

Bafael Lays Down Important Facts on Ultra Street Fighter IV’s White Health System

While everyone who plays Ultra Street Fighter IV likely has at least a basic understanding of how white health works, there’s a good chance that some elements of the mechanic remain a mystery. In order to help alleviate any confusion, Bafael–known for his character tutorial and game mechanic breakdown videos–recently put together a quick demonstration which shows how this temporary damage can affect a match.

Bafael covers things like how being stuck in block stun negates the regeneration of “real” health, how Gen’s super combo can be used to net kills and the conditions required for that to happen, and plenty more.

Whether you’re a veteran of the Street Fighter IV series or you only just recently let your first focus attack rock, there’s a good chance you’ll learn something new.

Relive The Fall Classic 2014’s Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R Finals

While certainly not the biggest game at this year’s Fall Classic, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R still brought out plenty of players from the scene hungry to get in some tournament play before the console release of Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- later this year.

Below, you’ll find embedded footage of the winners finals between Jin’s Dizzy and B.Z.B.’s Chipp, the losers finals between Jin and Blake&White’s Order Sol, and the final showdown between B.Z.B. and Blake&White. Though he was coming from the losers bracket, B.Z.B. shows clear dominance closing out the tournament with a bracket reset and then going on to victory without giving up a match.

Saikyo and the Dark Hadou Collide in cjbqulix’s Latest Ultra Street Fighter IV Combo Video

Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Dan and Evil Ryu don’t have a lot in common. Sure, they both have Dragon Punches and can chuck plasma–though Dan’s take on “plasma” pales in comparison to Evil Ryu’s–but that’s where the similarities end. Evil Ryu feeds on the souls of his enemies while Dan eats cans of cold beans over his sink to save himself the trouble of doing dishes later. That’s what makes the latest entry to cjbqulix’ Redux Combo series so unique: it puts this Street Fighter odd couple back to back and shows that even though Dan’s tools differ greatly from the current champion of the shoto archetype, he can still pull off some pretty sweet strings in the right hands.

Below, you’ll find footage of high-execution combos for both of these fighters. In true combo video fashion, cjbqulix makes use of Decapre’s Psycho stream to squeeze out some extra hits, allows Balrog to let a full Turn Around Punch rip for back to back Ultras from each fighter, and also includes some nice use of Dan’s super taunt as well.

Whether you’re a fan of serious combos or prefer a more laid back approach, this video has something you’ll enjoy.

GCYoshi13 Offers Up More Hard Tag Goodness for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s Chris Redfield

Below you’ll find the third and (likely) final part in GCYoshi13’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Chris Redfield hard tag combo series. As with the previous two entries, these combos display the incredible meter-building potential that the gun-toting fighter brings to battle.

In addition to building massive meter, these combos often deliver fatal damage and include a vast array of cast members to show that Chris can get along with pretty much anyone. While some of the openers appearing in this segment aren’t the most practical, there’s nothing wrong with keeping them in the back of your mind for when the zombie hunter’s trigger finger starts itching.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Combo Roundup – Chun-Li Takes Point, BIFU|Coach Steve’s Team on Display

Today we’ve got a collection of one-off Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 combo videos well worth checking out. The first three come from Eldon Moore and involve variant teams featuring Chun-Li on point and the last, from BIFU|Insaynne, shows off some beautiful damage optimization.

Up first we’ve got a concept combo that focuses on massive plasma blasts to round out an already devastating string of blows headed by Chun-Li. Once the Spinning Bird Kicks and Lightning Legs stop, Nova and Super-Skrull join the fray to melt their opposition.

Next, Dante and Wesker team up with the fast-footed Street Fighter veteran to deliver a devastating 1.2 million damage. The best part about this combo is the fact that it builds two bars of meter before busting out the Hyper Combos, so even if Chun lands a hit as soon as the fight starts, this guarantees a dead character.

Similarly, the next clip brings in two full meters while topping out at over 1.2 million damage. This time, though, Chun-Li is joined by Taskmaster and Akuma to dish out the pain.

To close things out, here’s an incredibly well-optimized combo for when Nova finds himself paired up with Doctor Doom and Spencer. The combo breaks 900,00 damage (that’s nine-zero-zero), but manages to do so without using any meter whatsoever. This is more than enough pain to dispatch plenty of characters, all while building just shy of 2.5 bars of super meter.
