Learn How to Put a (Run) Stop to El Fuerte as Ryu in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Fighting El Fuerte can be a chore thanks to his mobility and ambiguity, among other things. Luckily, Spab Rog has a new series of videos dedicated to overcoming this uncommon Ultra Street Fighter IV opponent.

Today’s session delves into Ryu’s best options for dealing with the chef’s tools. Many of the tips included in the video involve short stints of walking followed by crouching forward, abusing Ryu’s reel back animation on his focus attack, and other similar positional or hurtbox related happenings. By following these tips, you’ll surely be able to poke a hole in Fuerte’s offense and pile on some damage to discourage future shenanigans.

Level|Up Series Releases Bracket Assignments for SoCal Regionals 2015

The folks at Level|Up Series recently released a full list of bracket assignments and registration numbers for SoCal Regionals 2015, which will run this weekend in, you guessed it, Southern California. It’s no surprise that Ultra Street Fighter IV still brings in the biggest numbers, but Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U certainly drew plenty of attention as well.

Some of you may notice that Gundam isn’t on the list below; sadly the attendance numbers didn’t quite reach an acceptable level, so it had to be struck from the lineup. Otherwise, the competition looks to be healthy across the rest of the impressive selection of games; be sure to follow the links for a look at the current bracket assignments.

If you’re in the area and looking to sign up for competition, emergency onsite registration will be available on Thursday, October 8, from 7 PM until 10 PM, as well as Friday, October 9, and Saturday, October 10, from 8 AM until 9:30 AM. If you just enjoy watching others beat the pixels out of one another, you can pick up spectator passes daily from 8 AM until 8 PM.

SoCal Regionals 2015 is scheduled for October 9-11 in Ontario, California. More details can be found here.

Killer Instinct Team Requests Feedback on Season Two Content

Just as they did after the conclusion of Killer Instinct season one, the folks at Iron Galaxy Studios and Microsoft Studios launched a survey earlier today asking players a plethora of questions about their experiences with the game’s latest round of content.

The survey includes standard inquiries regarding play time, skill level, and the like, but also requests more in-depth input on topics relating to the Shadow Lab as well as opinions on favorite and least favorite characters. Many of the queries come paired with text boxes so those taking the survey can be as specific as they wish.

If there’s something you love (or hate) about the game, this is the perfect time to let the team know so they can make season three–set to launch in March of next year–the best yet.

Keep the Damage Flowing with These Sakura Unblockables in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Shano recently put up a video showing the best ways for Sakura to keep the damage going after a combo ends through the use of various unblockables in Ultra Street Fighter IV.

The majority of these setups work on one or two targets at best, but that’s just the nature of this sort of thing. There are, to be sure, a small number that work on a wider swath of cast members, but they’re certainly not the majority in the footage below. The good news–or, I suppose, the bad news, depending on which end of the setup you’re on–is that Shano has included plenty of variety when it comes to the type of knockdown delivered and wakeup timing used.

I personally found the destruction that Sakura can bring to an unsuspecting Ibuki to be nothing short of alarming. Maybe their rival battle has more anger behind it than the short cinematic would lead players to believe.

Persia Analyzes First Attack 2015’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Grand Finals

BROKENTIER’s Samantha “Persia” Hancock is back with another bit of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 match analysis. This time, she discusses the grand finals match between Tempo’s Chris G and Takumi of The Black Eye, which went down at Puerto Rico’s First Attack 2015 last month.

While Chris’ screen control from the Morrigan/Doom pairing makes even the simple task of existing a chore, Takumi shows that he’s not only able to weather the barrage of projectiles through impressive movement and contesting with Magnetic Disruptors, but that he can bring plenty of nasty tactics of his own.

For a full play-by-play breakdown of the set, check out the video below.

And if you liked Persia’s analysis, you’ll not want to miss tonight’s episode of Marvel LIVE. You can catch the podcast at 6 PM PDT, 9 PM EDT on Twitch.

Ricki Ortiz: Street Fighter V Gets Back to Grassroots Street Fighter

Dezmu of Edmonton Gamers recently sat down–through the power of the internet–with Evil Geniuses’ Ricki Ortiz, a player whose prominence within the fighting game community leaves little need for introduction. Though that may be the case for formalities, the opposite proves true when it comes to topics of discussion; thanks to her history spanning the expanse between Street Fighter II and Street Fighter IV, with frequent stops at the titles that came along the way, there’s more than enough to discuss.

With that in mind, Ortiz walks us through her journey through the world of fighting games, from her time as a kid at Golfland USA alongside her father and cousin to her successes in Capcom vs. SNK 2, and more recently her current training regimen.

Ortiz also speaks on how she feels Street Fighter V has changed from its early iterations, turning into something that, thanks to the recent build at Twitch Con, she seems more than excited to play. And, since we’re always curious what characters top players have in their sights as main material, Dezmu brings up the issue, which Ortiz meets with a handful of names: R. Mika, Chun-Li, and the recently leaked Laura, indicating that a decision is far from made.

Ortiz will be attending TCEG Con in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada this weekend to compete with some of the locals, as well as other invited players like teammate Justin Wong, so be on the look out.

Learn Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- with the Guilty Gear Crash Course

Novril, in association with his small Chemical Lovers team, recently released the first video in a new series of tutorials designed to help players get into the world of Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-. Since this is the first episode, the topics touched upon are ground-level basic, but that’s the point. As the video points out–and as we all know–getting into fighting games as something more than a method of whiling away the hours with random button slapping can be a daunting task.

In the tutorial, viewers will find comparisons between classic Street Fighter attacks, like Ryu’s crouching forward and Hadouken and the standing slash and crouching slash that most of the Xrd cast possess. They’ll also learn about combo and input notation, the proper (standard) button layout as well as receive a general overview for general goals of any match.

If you’ve got friends looking to pick up Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, they might want to keep an eye on this series.

Pick Up Some Fresh Cody Juggles in Ultra Street Fighter IV

If you’ve spent some time looking into Cody technology in Ultra Street Fighter IV, chances are you’ve run across the name GroundedSF. This proponent of planted shanks has dedicated (almost) a whole YouTube channel to shrugging off Cody’s boredom, typically in the form of nuanced combo options that may not always be readily apparent.

The most recent video to hit the channel features some options for the medium version of Criminal Upper. For instance, sometimes Cody’s knife combos prevents him from being able to connect with a jab Criminal Upper after a series of hits. In this situation, the strong version of the move can be used to make sure that combo damage rounds out nicely against specific members of the cast.

AXLSHINGO Step Kicks into Olympic Gaming’s Most Recent Ultra Street Fighter IV Spotlight

Olympic Gaming has rounded up another collection of Ultra Street Fighter IV footage from around the world of online play. This week, AXLSHINGO demonstrates his mastery of the game’s resident French mercenary.

As usual, the featured Abel player goes up against some top-notch competition, but something that makes this particular Spotlight stand out from recent entries comes at the end of the reel. Names like Jazdero and CCG|Air certainly impress, but it’s not common that we get to see the featured player competing in a mirror match against someone arguably the best at their own character, in this case, Gustavo “801 Strider” Romero.

As always, you can learn more about the featured player by hitting up the video’s description.
