Pick up For Honor once again with this video tutorial aimed at fighting game players

The warriors of For Honor might pick up their mantles and swords once again. Ubisoft just recently a fairly big content patch with a robust Training Mode. The game saw a little bit of success in the fighting game community… but it didn’t really stick. If the news is making you reconsider dusting off your copy of the game, then take a look at this tutorial video designed with fighting game players in mind.

While certainly not a traditional fighting game (and the odds may not always be in your favor, either), having good fundamentals will certainly be helpful in convincing enemies to depart the world of the living. The meat of the combat in For Honor is in the three stances, one for each side, and top. A player will block incoming attacks from those specific sides as well as attack in that direction. Between light and heavy attacks, this opens a pretty diverse move list. As for defense, there’s blocking, parrying, and dodging, and each technique carries a different scale of risk and rewards. To break up a turtling player, approach them for a throw.

Check out the tutorial below, and make sure to take advantage of the new For Honor Training Mode to become a successful warrior.

This is the finalized roster BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle will have at Evolution 2018

The time for Crossing Fate approaches. Although we have been used to steady character reveals from Arc System Works, we have a finalized cast that we’re going to deal with for the next few months. The company confirmed on Twitter that the following 31-member cast will be the official roster for Evolution 2018, and offered a handy graphic.

Of course, BlazBlue‘s cast is sitting at the top, with 13 members. Persona and Under Night characters evened out at seven each. Lastly, we have the completed team RWBY at four, after having just seen the first gameplay preview of Yang Xiao Long. Notably, this isn’t the full cast. There are still three more character packs coming in the form of DLC, which will round out the cast to 40. It sounds like we might not hear about them until Evo 2018 itself.

The game will launch on June 5th in the US, May 29th in Japan, and in Europe at a later date. Pre-ordering the game nets a reward in the form of the first character pack being available for free (Kanji, Orie, Platinum the Trinity). There’s also a BBTAG Collector’s Edition available at a higher price that will include all the DLC characters, though it seems like some of those will arrive later than expected.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is one of the main stage games for Evolution 2018.

For Honor receives Training Mode and some rebalancing in a free content patch

A viking, a samurai, and a knight storm into a bar…

Remember For Honor, the Ubisoft game from 2017 that’s something of a MOBA crossed with a fighting game? It has been mostly forgotten by the fighting game community, but if your love for the game is like steel, it might be time to dust off that axe or sword. The company launched a new patch on all platforms for the game, bringing a fairly essential feature to any serious player: Training Mode.

The trailer below showcases the addition, which is actually quite robust. It includes:

  • Training Media: actual videos that are visual guides for the various modes in the game, introductions to heroes, refreshers on the Faction War system, and tutorial panels
  • Apprentice Trials: a revamped Tutorial that walks through the mechanics of battle, rating you for performing various challenges
  • Warrior Trials: more advanced trials that include techniques like parrying, guard break moves, feints, and so on
  • Training Arena: a mode typical to most fighting games; it’s a sandbox arena where you can set up conditions for virtually any fighting conditions; you can customize AI behavior, enable various modifiers, see damage values, and so on

The For Honor patch notes also delineate other changes coming to the game, like a few new maps and gear rebalancing that reduces the strength of offensive gear, making defensive playstyles more viable.

Is this enough to rekindle your enthusiasm, or have you laid down your blade permanently in For Honor? Let us know in the comments.

The mobile version of Puzzle Fighter is closing its servers and retiring from app stores in July 2018

Looks like an era is coming to an end, again — at least for Puzzle Fighter, one of Capcom’s still-cherished franchises. The latest title, a mobile game, only became available worldwide in fall of 2017; but this morning, Capcom-Unity announced the surprising end of the game: on July 31st, Puzzle Fighter‘s servers will shut down, and the app will be removed from iOS/Android stores even earlier, on July 1st.

“As huge fans of Puzzle Fighter ourselves, the team here at Capcom Game Studio Vancouver is proud to have created a new version of the game that’s unique and enjoyable,” the Capcom Unity blog post writes. “As the studio is dedicating its focus to our flagship Dead Rising franchise, we have decided to sunset Puzzle Fighter.”

Those currently enjoying the game will receive some farewell gifts. Today, players are receiving 10,000 units of in-game currency. Upcoming characters, Regina, Dr. Wily, and Ada Wong, along two new stages, will be available for free as well. The game’s soundtrack has been posted on SoundCloud.

It’s a sad, quiet end for the Street Fighter-infused puzzle game. Maybe Capcom will revive it one day on PC or console…? But it likely will remain shelved in their reservoir of inactive franchises — and after an operating window of barely a year.

“We appreciate the fans who have supported Puzzle Fighter until this point. We thank you for playing the game and hope to ensure your remaining time with Puzzle Fighter is an enjoyable one,” the blog concluded.

Bandai Namco teases the next Dragon Ball FighterZ DLC character… with memes

There are memes in your backyard, and there are memes on the official Bandai Namco company Twitter. Similarly to Capcom’s recent tweets, it seems like the latest trend is to drop coy messages on social media. We don’t know who the next Dragon Ball FighterZ character will be, and after seeing the following messages, we might not be any closer to finding out than before. Unless you’re a meme-linguist with a degree. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Whatever dank memes the Bandai Namco account produces next, we’re bound to figure out the next DBFZ character somehow… eventually…

Stay tuned to Shoryuken for developments.

Tension Pulse returns with four Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 fighters in an online exhibition series

It’s been quite the long hiatus, but one of the best online exhibitions is back. Focusing exclusively on Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, Tension Pulse is coming back after about a five-month break. For those who are unfamiliar with it, it typically features four players paired up in sets of first-to-seven. Usually, one pair is rather less known, and the other features more famous players — though it’s not always a distinction. Famous or not, all the players display impressive skill at the venerated Arc System Works fighter. All this takes place on Steam’s servers, and features commentary duos for entertainment (and educational) purposes.

We’ve got fresh blood all around. We have a chance to see one of the best Baiken players in the United States, NitroNoodlez, face Strawberry’s Ky. That will be interesting to see, considering Baiken has received a healthy batch of upgrades in the 2.1 Guilty Gear patch. We will also see new I-no tricks from INOBOYZ against AverageJoe’s Johnny, who might not turn out so average. Let’s learn a little more about each participant and see what they have to say about their opponents.

NitroNoodlez

ggxrd-rev2-baiken

On the match: “I’m super excited and happy I was approached for this exhibition. There aren’t many Baiken players out there and not much footage of her as well, so I want to show what she can do as of the latest update. Most importantly, I want it to be a set where not only me and my opponent can learn and improve from, but also any Baiken and Ky players out there.”

On his opponent: “I know Stawberry is quite a good Ky player and overall solid, but we’ve never played each other before, so I don’t know exactly how my opponent plays. Ky is so open-ended as a character that every Ky plays pretty differently. As far as the match-up goes, Ky is certainly one of Baiken’s worst. It’s hard for her to get things started against him, and he can force situations and interactions on her that are very skewed in his favor. It got slightly better with the 2.1 update, but not by much. That said, I have been preparing with my local Ky players, zenzen and bafojig, as well as invading the Ky discord for matches so I can play against a variety of styles.”

On his individual style: “Compared to the other Baiken players such as LTL and Mystic, I play pretty lame and passive. I don’t mind even if every game ends in a time out, haha. I think it stems from my playing environment and the characters I play in other games, such as Nine in Blazblue, where I will play a slower-paced game until I get a knockdown or smell blood. That said, I’m a bit of a slow starter so I constantly try to research, analyze and study since I’m not the type of player who usually plays off feel, despite Baiken having a penchant for making reads.”

Strawberry

ggxrd-revelator-ky-portrait

On the match: “I’m excited to finally be on Tension Pulse, I’ve watched the stream for a long time, and I feel like this a great opportunity for me to start my tournament training for Texas Showdown and Combo Breaker. I hope at least I can put on a good show for people watching, but I have to confess — I really want to win too!”

On his opponent: “Coincidentally, I just met NitroNoodlez on Twitter a couple weeks ago while I was looking for information on Baiken. Since then, a lot of people have spoken highly of his skill, so I’m a little scared but also a little excited to play him so soon. I don’t have much experience against Baiken at all, so I’m not quite sure how to interact with her using Ky, but I’m most worried about falling into patterns and making it easy for her to Guard Cancel my offense. I think I need to be especially careful setting up okizeme. Ky is a strong and solid character, so despite my unfamiliarity with this specific match-up, I think if I can stick to what I know and adapt it around Nitro’s gameplan, I should be okay.”

On his individual style: “I feel like my playstyle is still in an emergent state, but I’d say I tend towards trying to minimize risk by playing from a distance. I enjoy the mind games that are created when I can set a Grinder and threaten the opponent into making a bad move. Ky is a character that can do well at all ranges, so if I’m feeling aggressive, there’s always that option too. I’ve also been trying to emphasize “mental strength” recently; if I have even a pixel of life left I won’t give up! Ultimately I want to do what I need to in order to win!”

AverageJoe

ggxrd-revelator-johnny-portrait

On the match: “I’m very glad I have the opportunity to play in this exhibition. I don’t think I’m known outside of my circle of friends in the FGC, and this will help put me on the map and make a name for myself.”

On his opponent: “The only thing I know about INOBOYZ is that he thinks water is wack. Outside of jokes, I’ve only played him like six times at CEOtaku 2017. I do know that INOBOYZ travels for a lot for tournaments and also has a lot of Johnny experience from RIO, who is a Johnny player at his locals. I play the I-no match-up a bunch with my friends Spectryn, BeastChan23, and Havoc_Noah. So I feel very comfortable in the match-up. I think it will be a very exciting match, and hope to please everyone watching.”

On his individual style: “I like to play a very patient and calculated approach. I do have my fair share of crazy mashes and going ham, but every single time I do something in match, I do it with meaning and purpose.”

INOBOYZ

ggxrd-guiltygear-xrd-sign-i-no

On the match: “Very excited, the exhibition will help me work on nerves and adjustment.”
On his opponent: “Though I’ve never seen my opponent in action before, I’m pretty familiar with the match-up, and I do feel like Johnny has a slight advantage on I-no, but it is doable.”
On his individual style: “My playstyle changes between patient and offensive. I wait and look for the best time to go in; mix-ups and knockdowns are a must.”

Don’t miss the reignition of Tension Pulse on its usual stream: Silva_hime’s Twitch channel. AverageJoe and INOBOYZ will kick off the action today at 9:30 PM ET/8:30 PM CT/6:30 PM PT. After that, we’ll see NitroNoodlez and his Baiken against Strawberry’s Ky. Hotashi and bafojig will commentate the sets.

SNK’s brilliant animation design shines through with Garou: Mark of the Wolves’s Rock Howard

SNK has always provided lots of eye candy in its detailed art, though one rarely has the chance to slow down the action to really pay attention to the details. SugarPunch Design Works took the time to appreciate the fine details of the aesthetic that makes up Rock Howard, one of the most popular characters in the series.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves’s Rock, who is the son of the villainous Geese Howard and adopted son of Terry Bogard, has elements from both characters. But he largely succeeds in “carving his own lineage”, as SugarPunch points out. There’s genius simplicity in Rock’s color scheme, which has basically only three colors. His jacket is an important element; it’s finely outlined, and you can always see it moving responsively to whatever way Rock attacks. It’s that blowback, or follow-through, effect that adds to the power of SNK’s animations. There’s also a nice touch of personality in his attacks that not everyone might know about — after performing heavy attacks, Rock flips or fixes his hair.

Check out the video below to appreciate Rock’s old-school, and excellent, animation.

Look out, it’s a Vanish attack! Nakkiel teaches a lesson about the Dragon Ball FighterZ technique

Whether you’re a casual or competitive Dragon Ball FighterZ player, it’s good to familiarize yourself with certain techniques in the game. The “Vanish” technique is an easy and common way to spend super meter — but there’s quite a bit of nuance to the ability. Learning a little more about it will set you apart from other players.

Pro player PG|Nakkiel continues his “Lookout” series with a introduction to the attack, pointing out that the attacker has a slight advantage over the defender (provided that both characters go for light jabs.) However, that doesn’t mean there’s no counter-play against Vanish — usually, attacks that are canceled into Vanish aren’t gapless. The universal anti-air, 2H, might be too slow to stop Vanish, but a Reflect will work — and even result in a punish in the corner. Other than that, a Level 3 Super will always punish a Vanish, and there are some character-specific tools available as well.

If you prefer a detailed text guide, LordKnight wrote out Vanish defensive techniques.

Team Spooky streamed a BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle tournament at Next Level using the latest build

Arc System Works graciously supplied a pre-release build of BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle to New York City’s premiere fighting game space, Next Level. The weekly event, Next Level Battle Circuit, featured the upcoming game in a first-to-one tournament that lasted a little over two hours. With a wide variety of entrants, just about every character received a little stage time.

At the beginning, tune in to Omnisscythe’s matches if you want to see some Makoto in action. He paired her up with Gordeau, which seems like a good fit to cover Makoto’s weaknesses. There’s no shortage of Ruby and Weiss players; those two are regarded fairly strong by the community, at least in their impressions so far. One of the players to look out for is Method|Flux, who uses Nu-13 and Weiss. Flux recently posted a BBTAG mechanics overview, laying out some competitive advice. PAG|Grover also shows up, using Yu Narukami and Ruby. The two face off against each other in the finals. Their matches are quite exciting, as the two already have some experience with the game.

Check it out below, and if you want more footage, we covered videos showcasing BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle special intros.
