Cervantes move list and strategy: Get ahead of the curve with these videos for SoulCalibur VI’s undead pirate

One of the notable absences from the SoulCalibur VI Network Test was the dread pirate Cervantes. Though there have been a few opportunities to see footage of the sword dual-wielding fighter, currently, we can only use uploaded footage to study up on this character. If you’re a Cervantes main or simply interested in what’s new for him, check out the following media to get familiar with his tools.

For anyone who’s played Cervantes before, they should feel right at home with his SoulCalibur VI iteration, as he still makes great use of his Dread Charge stance and teleports. The teleport doesn’t have much invulnerability, but Cervantes can cancel Dread Charge or use Dread Charge Dash. He also has very strong slide moves, Ab and Ba. Instant Geo Da Ray returns as well, rewarding those who practice execution.

docvizzo compiled a move analysis video below showcasing what’s changed for the pirate. He makes some comparisons to the SoulCalibur V version of Cervantes as well.

Jovian Chan posted a few informative tweets about Cervantes (LH is Lethal Hit):

It’s not ideal, but Bigbrook recorded camera videos of Cervantes’ move list and a match while at Comic Con:

IGN’s latest video discusses the history and the rise of the SoulCalibur franchise

We’re approaching the latest release in the saga of the SoulCalibur games, and it will be the sixth chapter for the venerated, 20-year-old franchise. The game’s burgeoning history has had its ups and downs, and IGN is taking a closer look at the games with famous personalities involved throughout the years.

In the video below, Bandai Namco’s MarkMan opens up by talking about the 3D feel of SoulCalibur on the Dreamcast. Popular streamers Aris (Avoiding the Puddle) and Maximilian Dood talk about what made the game different from others — the movement, the speed, the characters, and of course, ring outs. SC player Bibulus brings up the iconic announcer who always reminds us that we’re fighting on the Stage of History. Kayane also steps in to talk about her trajectory in the esports scene and how Xianghua resonates with her personally. They also bring up how spirited the SoulCalibur communities have been, particularly in France.

Nintendo teams up with ELEAGUE to televise the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Invitational

ELEAGUE, an esports organization who famously paired up with Capcom for multiple Street Fighter V events, is picking up another fighting game franchise for fame and glory. Showing a teaser trailer for November, ELEAGUE revealed the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Invitational — which will be televised.

Details haven’t been released yet, but we know that this will happen in November on the TBS channel. We can expect top Smash players invited on the grand stage to showcase the latest build of the game. The Esports Observer reports that the program will feature a three-part series that showcases the game.

It’s quite a departure from Nintendo’s previous esports strategy (or rather, lack thereof) as this will be the second time Super Smash Bros. will be featured on a major network television, the first being DisneyXD via ESPN.

Tira, Talim, and Voldo impressions from SoulCalibur VI’s Network Mode test

Bandai Namco gave PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users a great opportunity this past weekend: a free, downloadable client of SoulCalibur VI for Network Mode testing. Though there was no opportunity to practice in Training Mode, for many players around the world it was the first opportunity to get their hands on the game. Furthermore, certain characters like Talim and Voldo made it later to the roster, so there haven’t been as many impressions on them. The video footage below focuses on those two as well as Tira, who debuted with the limited beta.

Aris on his Avoiding the Puddle channel has been streaming the game nearly non-stop. Check him out using Voldo below (7:30 was especially funny):

These clips also show him using Talim a lot:

Speaking of Talim, she hasn’t been available much at events, so even those who attended certain tournaments didn’t have a chance to try the Wind Priestess. Well, don’t underestimate her, as she can pack quite a punch right now. Kayane shows off what she has picked up so far in this segment.

For some shorter impressions, check out Uri’s clips of using Tira, who is a DLC-only character, but she was available in the Network Test.

If it’s about SoulCalibur, you have to hear from Maximilian Dood. If you’d like to listen a little to find out how good the online play has been rather than just watch more footage, hear his thoughts below.

Study up on SoulCalibur VI’s Xianghua with this guide from Kayane

SoulCalibur VI’s star fencer, Xianghua, plays a significant role in the game and is a series mainstay. Famous for her evasive movements, parries, and the Crybaby maneuver, this character appeals to those who like to pressure the opponent with mind games. Though she may not be as popular as some select characters, but there’s certainly a famous fighting game personality tied to her — Kayane.

The French player, widely considered as the best Xianghua for many years, put together a written guide that breaks down what you need to know to do well in the SoulCalibur VI Network Test. In her Xianghua Guide, she delineates which parts of the character are more advanced versus basic, so don’t worry about being bogged down in difficult terminology. Recognizing that the Network Test doesn’t offer optimal training conditions, Kayane describes the spirit of the character, who isn’t focused as much on damage, but pressuring the opponent as well as countering their pressure in specific ways.

After the intro, you’ll learn what Xianghua’s best moves are. The basics cover standard pokes, expanding into her stance game and the infamous 22_B, which is an evading launcher. Though combos might be difficult to grasp at first, it’s definitely recommended to know her Auto Guard Impacting moves, which can often trigger Lethal Hits for additional hitstun. Finish the opponent off by comboing into her Critical Edge or enter Soul Charge to barrage the opponent with enhanced strings. Keep in mind that even Kayane herself hasn’t had that much time to spend with the game, so this is still far from what the character can ultimately offer.

For additional help, refer to a manual put together by Bandai Namco for the network test or check out Hayate’s video guides on Zasalamel and Nightmare.

SonicFox’s fursuit makes a guest appearance in arcade indie game Ninjin: Clash of Carrots

It’s not every day that we see fighting game personalities make guest appearances outside their genre. If anyone were to bet on which player would cross over like that, Echo Fox|SonicFox is a safe choice. A new indie game, Ninjin: Clash of Carrots is celebrating the hugely successful competitor by placing his trademark blue fursuit as selectable apparel.

The action title stars either a ninja fox or a ninja rabbit on a vengeful quest to retrieve rabbits. Gameplay resembles an endless runner a bit (but this isn’t a mobile game!), but it’s actually a beat ’em up: dodge danger and hack ‘n’ slash through hordes of enemies, drawing on fairly deep customization that has over 150 items. The weapons aren’t just skins, as they have variable lengths, strength, and critical hit chance. There’s also an “Oni TV Show” Survivor Mode as well as Story Mode. Both can be tackled solo or with a friend in cooperative mode (local or online).

A Modus Games employee posted footage of the SonicFox fursuit in action:

For a complete trailer of the game, check out the video below that showcases the PlayStation 4 version:

You can find the title on all the major gaming platforms: PlayStation 4, Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

Dish out new ninjutsu tactics with this Taki tutorial for SoulCalibur VI

Everyone’s favorite Fu-Ma clan ninja and a mainstay SoulCalibur character since the beginning (except for SCV, but we’ll overlook that) needs no introduction. Famous for her good looks and powerful ninjutsu, Taki returns in SoulCalibur VI and though she seems fairly straightforward, you might still actually learn a thing or two from Hayate’s thorough breakdown video.

Of course, Taki excels in moving quickly and dodging, sometimes even attacking from the air. This plays into her having a limited range, but once she’s close, she can start using her Possession stance for pressure. Most of the moves from the past games return. But she also has plenty of new tricks to surprise her enemies, like a 6A+B projectile. A brand new mechanic revolves around her second blade, Mekki Maru. Any attacks with this weapon (highlighted purple) deal chip damage to the opponent, breaking through their defenses a bit and whittling down their life bar.

Taki has many moves that help her close the gap, and at the right moment, she can use Soul Charge to turn the tide. Similarly to other characters, her damage increases considerably in that mode. She gains some follow-ups that even launch the opponent to finish them off with her air throw.

Hayate’s other recent guide covers SoulCalibur VI‘s Zasalamel.
