A Chicago tournament organizer alienates THE COOL KID93 at the Chicago Gaming Coalition event

This past weekend marked the debut of a Chicago-based event that integrated various esports communities. The 3-day event, “Chicago Gaming Coalition,” involved PC communities from games like Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Rocket League, and more. In addition. fighting game tournaments took place on Saturday, including Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Tekken 7, and many more.

An exchange between Chicago-based sponsored player Marcus Redmond (BxA|THE COOL KID93) and Michael Peter Hionis, who took part in organizing the FGC side of things, was posted on Twitter by the player. The conversation is regarding payments owed for playing in the tournament. Due to the way the event was organized, FGC winners had to ask to receive the money later — electronically — within seven days.

In posts in the Chicago Fighting Game group and in interviews with us, Redmond stated that he won’t attend any further events that Hionis is part of because of the way he was treated. “Frosty is the only one I know of,” Redmond told SRK, stating that he won’t attend another Frosty Faustings, an event co-organized by Hionis. “But I won’t be attending another if he is hosting it. One thing I want to make clear is my issue is with Michael Peter Hionis! The Frosty Faustings staff as a whole has done us well. Never been a minute’s trouble. But if he is there hosting it and is the head person there, then I’m not attending it.”

He also stated that Hionis interacted with his wife, Joy Redmond, at the event and “disrespected her in tone.” Hionis assures that the exchange was heated on both sides, and further testimony states that Joy Redmond was very insistent about asking for payout. Hionis wasn’t directly involved in issuing rewards.

Hionis has publicly apologized for the interaction with THE COOL KID93:

Shoryuken reached out to Hionis and he provided his statement. He plans to engage with Redmond’s sponsor, BxA, to talk about the incident and resolve the issue.

“I own this mistake, I am 100% to blame for this negative interaction. As a person that takes pride in making guests happy at events that I am a part of, this behavior is unquestionably unacceptable. Regardless of how many times Marcus asked that morning about the total amount of his final payout money, there is no excuse for my impatience,” Hionis told Shoryuken.

“Marcus Redmond, for this act of disrespect, I would like to formally reiterate my previous apology. I am sorry,” he continued. “When I publicly apologized on Twitter and Facebook, it was in a direct reply within your posts, specifically intended for you to see. If my apology came off as forced or  insincere, that was not my intention, as I genuinely am sorry for snapping at you.”

Mike “ElvenShadow” Boczar wasn’t involved in organizing the event or the exchange, but he also issued a statement in the group:

“First of all, let me just say that there is no defending what Hionis said. It was unprofessional and not the way to handle things. He and I had a long talk about it yesterday shortly after I found out. He has since apologized and CGC staff WILL be paying CoolKid within 5 to 7 days, just like every other competitor,” Boczar wrote. “Frosty Faustings is run by a very large group of dedicated staff in the FGC who also work at a ton of other events. Hionis also works on other FGC events [such as Combo Breaker], not just FF. I won’t name them all, but if you were to boycott FF based on the mistake of one individual at a separate event. you would need to boycott a lot of other events using the same logic, it would be unfair to all of the other people who work so hard on FF and who work hard on other events. Hionis usually does great work and this type of thing hasn’t happened before. I’ve spoken with him personally and can PROMISE you that nothing like this will happen at FF.”

Eric Boyer, who is part of Mad City — the company that organized the event — explained some of the background of how the event was run. Initially, fighting games were not part of the weekend lineup. The company has focused on PC titles only in the past.

“Let me just say this, I do not support the response that was given in those screenshots and that does not represent what we trying to build here with this event,” Boyer wrote. I’d still like to learn a bit more about it, and I’m very sorry that things played out the way they did. Because of the timing in which the FGC team joined us with this event, a lot of decisions have already been made at that point in previous months. Paying out every winner over the entire event after it ends, while setting an expectation of no longer than 7 days is one of those things. The FGC team proactively communicated that this would be a little tough for the community and what is historically done, but it was a decision that had already been made and baked into the logistical flow of the event.”

Last night, Boyer made a new post, stating that all FGC competitors received their prize money. John Fazio, the president of N3rd Street Gamers — a company that also participated in the event — has stated that in all future FGC-related events, payout will be issued within the same day of the events.

Some additional problems were encountered at the event: there were a couple of issues with FGC setups (I attended the event myself, but only for Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2. Some of the setups didn’t have the latest 2.1 patch installed from the get-go, but that was quickly rectified.) John “Post Malort” Fatima, who competed in Tekken 7, has told SRK about numerous problems with that tournament. Many consoles didn’t have all the DLC characters — including Geese Howard, whom Post Malort uses.

An unrelated incident also occurred during the three-day tournament: a fight broke out between two CS:GO players, resulting in the arrival of police and an ambulance. The incident was contained, and didn’t impact the event overall. Mad City provided a statement regarding that situation, reported by the CS:GO website Dust2.us:

In reviewing the situation, we found it was contained to only two individuals. The [other members] of the teams were not involved, and both have agreed that they do not condone violence. We have banned the two players that were involved in the confrontation.

The teams are now dealing with a ‘red card’ and a 4v5 situation. They have 30 minutes to provide a sub to replace that player, who will pay an additional entry fee, with our approval. We will not allow any ringers in. It will be a subjective decision because at the end of the day, this tournament is for the community and we will make a decision that’s best for the community.

Daigo Umehara shares his thoughts and reactions to the Street Fighter V set with Tokido at Kemonomichi 2

A lot has been said about the Kemonomichi 2 event that took place last weekend, especially about the clash of the titans of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. Echo Fox|Tokido faced off against none other than Hx.Twitch.CYG BST|Daigo Umehara, and — as most of us know already — challenger Tokido lost, and tears were shed.

Though some cast pretty negative takes on that outcome, there was much more at stake than may have first appeared. On a post-event stream, Umehara and Fuudo talked at length about the event. A Japanese blog transcribed the conversation, which then another blog, FuguTabetai, translated into English. Daigo talked about why Otani was his training partner in preparation for the showdown. Then he goes into explaining the neutral game and the drawbacks to crouching.

“If you play normally, as long as you don’t get cornered, Guile won’t lose. So you should stand and play neutral or walk forward to stay in the center of the screen,” Umehara said. “If you walk forward, you will eat your opponent’s attacks. For me, the neutral game means ‘stand and wait.’ Usually, Guile crouches and waits, but there are drawbacks to crouching.”

Addressing his feelings about Tokido, Daigo talks about Tokido’s doubts, growth, and the desire to test himself. He was happy that Tokido put so much on the line, as evidenced by his reaction to the loss.

Check out the full transcript of this fascinating and insightful conversation over on the FuguTabetai blog. Take a look at our Kemonomichi 2 results page for more information about the event itself.

Justin Wong to star in a fighting game comedy film “Last Hit” with UFC fighter Elias Theodorou and Kayane

In a bit of news nobody expected, Echo Fox|Justin Wong is set to star in a feature comedy film that places Street Fighter V at the centerpiece. Titled Last Hit, the movie involves a UFC competitor — Elias Theodorou — as well as known FGC personalities Kayane, Luffy, and Zhi Lang Chew (Zhieeep)!

The plot centers around Theodorou’s character, Denis Bergeron: an MMA fighter who competes in his discipline until a tragic accident befalls him. He turns to esports and begins playing Street Fighter V. He finds “a new love and new friends” in the FGC, but also encounters a rival, Chris Ballard (possibly played by Justin Wong…?). Ballard is described as a “personification of GamerGate” and humiliates the ex-FGC fighter, who then must train for a chance to redeem himself at a showdown later in the movie.

For now, details are slim. Justin Wong recorded a message for the fans on the movie’s website:

The film is currently in production, and is expected to land in 2019.

More of Grøh’s background revealed in the latest SoulCalibur VI developer highlight video

Bandai Namco posted their next “Character Introduction” video, this time for the SoulCalibur VI newcomer, Grøh. Though these videos don’t spoil too much of the game, intrepid hunters of even the smallest lore tidbits should enjoy this closer look at the brand new character.

Considered to have more of an “anime” aesthetic, many fans have been speculating which country Grøh hails from. The game’s producer, Motohiro Okubo, reveals that it’s Norway, which fits Japan’s perception of the northern regions of Europe, he says. Then Okubo moves on to the Agent in Black’s fighting style, revealing that his weapon is called “Double Saber.” As we know, its unique feature is that it can split into two. Okubo also praises the graphical side of the game, commenting on how Unreal Engine makes clothes sway in battle.

At the end, Okubo asks the audience to stay patient for more news. We have yet to see Ivy and Zasalamel gameplay, who have been confirmed for the roster recently. Check out some Grøh gameplay to see him in action.

The Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 2.1 patch is now available for Steam users

Taking the “when it’s ready” strategy for the PC version, Arc System Works didn’t announce a release date for the latest Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 patch. Well, that date turned out to be today — because as of now, Steam users can download the 2.1 version update, which mainly rebalances the cast and fixes a few minor bugs.

The REV 2 Steam update post talks about a fishing bug, but the main object of interest for players will be the balance updates. Every character received not just small tweaks, but generally some sort adjustment that changes their game or combos significantly. You can read up on the full, community-translated REV 2 2.1 patch notes on Shoryuken.

Users are reporting that the “Steam join” function is broken and doesn’t work with this version; joining rooms via passkeys still works all the same.

Shini, who ports the game to Steam, said that the issue will be fixed soon:

Meanwhile, online warriors, it’s “Heaven or Hell” time for you! If you happen to play Baiken, the best character, check out the NitroNoodlez tutorial on Baiken 2.1 changes.

Rumors about Geralt the Witcher appearing in SoulCalibur VI increase as CD Projekt RED teases crossover

As SoulCalibur VI developer Bandai Namco continues to slowly trickle out official news, eager fighting games turn to leaks and speculations to figure out the remaining characters. Many people have wondered whether Geralt from the popular RPG series The Witcher could make it into the game, seeing as he’s a skilled swordfighter (who is also capable of limited magic with Signs, which could easily fit with some of SoulCalibur‘s special moves). Now, there are more hints to fuel this line of speculation.

Recently, CD Projekt RED’s Community Lead Marcin Momot tweeted the following:

Momot specifically mentions “one of the upcoming games later this year,” which would align with SoulCalibur VI‘s release. Furthermore, the Witcher 3 was published in Europe by Bandai Namco. Some believe that Geralt would also be a great fit in Monster Hunter World, which is certainly true; however, that game is already out.

YouTuber rooflemonger believes Geralt would be a “perfect fit” in the game:

Dasvergeben is still providing some SoulCalibur VI rumors, but Geralt specifically wasn’t mentioned so far.

Out-ninjutsu your opponent with these Ibuki combos in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Meno is back with another great combo video. This time, they set their sight on Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition‘s Ibuki. The ninja has received a couple of exciting tools in the latest version, so if you haven’t explored her in-depth yet, this is a great opportunity.

The notation of each combo is displayed at the top of the video for reference. The sequences are organized by screen position, starter, and resource usage, so it’s easy to find something for any situation. The latter sections of the video cover mostly heavy kick jump-ins and highly damaging routes. Several also have V-Trigger activations. Her second V-Trigger, the Fuma Shuriken, comes back like a boomerang — it’s not only a good combo tool, but it can also setup a cross-up reset situation, which can be seen around the 2:28 minute mark.

Refer to the full video below to learn how to catch opponents off-guard with Street Fighter V‘s (first) ninja:

Recently, Capcom discussed V-Trigger scaling for the character in a post.
