Check out the first gameplay footage of SoulCalibur VI’s newest fighters, Voldo and Talim

San Diego Comic Con 2018 took place this weekend, and the Bandai Namco team took the opportunity to feature the latest developments of SoulCalibur VI. The most recent additions to the growing roster are Talim and Voldo, and after their character trailers, we now get to see them in action.

IGN had the opportunity to interview Bandai Namco Brand Manager Mark Religioso. Religioso goes over Voldo and his origins, mentioning how the venerated Soul character became a staple of the series over the years. Unfortunately, there isn’t really much information revealed; they reiterate the fact that Character Creation will return in some form, and remind us that SoulCalibur VI will be at Evo 2018.

Talim was one of the most popular characters, according to a character poll. Religioso also mentions that the game is much more cinematic and features slow-motion in order to make it more appealing as a spectator game. There is some Voldo footage in the background, but keep scrolling below to see dedicated game-play clips.

Featured partially in the clips above, here’s a more substantial look at Voldo in action. The player pulled off a couple of interesting combos and attacks, using classic Voldo stances.

Here’s some more of Talim in action against Yoshimitsu and Grøh:

A Japanese player modded a Mikado arcade cabinet to use console pads

Traveling to Japan, the mecca of fighting games, carries one condition with it: it’s better if you’re a player who can use arcade sticks, or else you won’t be able to perform at your best at numerous arcade centers you’ll want to visit. Though some tournaments in Japan ran on consoles, for the most part, you have to know how to play on a stick. But this could change in the future, and one person is showing a successful modding of an arcade cabinet that allows players to use some console pads.

TMF posted on Twitter about how they used a USB decoder to hook up pads onto a Mikado arcade cabinet. In further tweets, they said that PS3 and Xbox 360 tended to be less stable and more buggy, and of course, they have to remain wired.

Here’s a video of this in action, with the pad working and using a macro in Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2:

And here’s another video from Joniosan which shows a player successfully using this to play matches:

Maybe there’s hope for a future when pad and stick players alike can play on any platform, regardless of preference? This could be an important, first step for arcades to start including USB ports that let pad players bring their own devices.

Over 1,000 people are registered for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle at Evo 2018 — but the matches won’t be 3/5

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is the youngest game to enter the main stage of Evolution 2018, and so its first year will be sort of a test run. One of the prevailing topics in the community has been whether the game should berun as 3 out of 5 rounds, particularly since every fight is just one “match,” and some of those can go by quickly. While some have been pushing for that to be the case, there’s an official response from Mr. Wizard and Tom Cannon: the game will run at 2 out of 3 rounds due to time constraints.

Here’s the reasoning Tom Cannon provided via Twitter:

Finally, he linked the data provided by community member and commentator EbonicPlague, who recorded a sample of match lengths.

On the bright side, the interest in BBTAG is quite noticeable; I’m not sure anyone predicted that over 1,000 people would be entering the Evo 2018 tournament. If you’re not one of those, make haste, as there is still time to register for Evo 2018.

Familiarize yourself with new Siegfried mechanics in this SoulCalibur VI character breakdown

Hayate continues his series of SoulCalibur VI tutorial videos, ahead of its October 19th release. If you’ve been a Siegfried fan from SoulCalibur III, you’re probably quite interested in the nuanced changes of the sword-wielder in the upcoming installment.

Along with Pantocrator, Hayate first goes over Siegfried’s changes. Classified as a mid-range zoning character with stances, he retains most of his old moves, with the exception of 9K,9B, and 22B, which were quicker jump moves and an attack that weaved into stance. His trademark moves, like the 3B attack and A+B in all stances.

He has learned some new tricks, notably 6A+B, which sometimes activates “Dark Legacy” mode, a new mechanic. You may have noticed Siegfried sometimes glows with blue flame, especially when his health is low, as if he had Soul Charge active. Dark Legacy improves some moves, making them able to Lethal Hit, but there might be more to this. Siegfried can “spend” Dark Legacy mode on an explosion attack, just like Nightmare’s.

Check out the explanatory video below, and if you’re yearning for some great gameplay footage of Siegfried, look to the CEO 2018 SoulCalibur VI exhibition.

If Siegfried is too old-school for you, turn to Hayate’s informative SoulCalibur VI Grøh breakdown.

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] is coming to Steam on August 20th, 2018

The time has finally come, PC warriors! As the latest version of the Under Night In-Birth, aptly subtitled Late[st], arrived on consoles earlier this year, many fans were eager to see if it would arrive on Steam as well. Arc System Works PC developer Shini just announced the Steam version of the game Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] on Twitter.

The Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] Steam page lists the release date as August 20th, this year (it will be August 21st in Japan). The teaser image Shini posted does list the Force of Fragment digital soundtrack, and he confirmed that it will be available as free DLC until August 28th, a full week after the release. If the Steam version is in-line with the console edition, it should cost $49.99.

For those who don’t know much about UNIST — While it does have a heavy anime aesthetic, it’s unlike typical air-dashers like BlazBlue: Central Fiction or Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2. It’s a bit more footsie-oriented and rewards good defense. At the center of its mechanics lies the GRD system, a sort of tug-of-war mechanic that can shift the tide between players. It features 20 unique characters, most fairly easy-to-approach but difficult-to-master.

Check out a trailer of the opening animation here:

New details and screenshots of SoulCalibur VI’s Talim reveal insight into her mechanics

“Let see which way the wind’s blowing!“

As Talim sails into SoulCalibur VI, many fans are pleased to see her return, particularly because she was absent in SoulCalibur V. Shortly after her announcement, new information has arrived with a few details about her refined playstyle.

According to a Gamer.jp interview, with translations by Flying_Wonkey, Talim will still, of course, be a speedy fighter with stances that rush the opponent down with a barrage of strikes. The newest installment of the series reworks her Wind Saults, making them more accessible to use. Additionally, she has a new “Air Rage” stance which can be used offensively or defensively. And lastly, her Critical Edge actually restores her health, so she is yet another character with healing powers (Yoshimitsu’s super also heals him).

Enjoy the screenshots below, and stay tuned to Shoryuken for upcoming SoulCalibur VI news.

Top French SoulCalibur VI players share footage and detailed impressions of the game

France is known as a mecca for SoulCalibur, and it seems like that will stay the same for the next iteration. Recently, a few famous French players ventured to Bandai Namco’s offices to sit down for a little bit longer with the game. Kayane, Hayate, Keysona, and Keev spent as much time as they could combing through the game’s mechanics and garnering impressions on SoulCalibur VI‘s growing cast.

The players compiled their thoughts in a SoulCalibur VI Feedback Doc, divided into several sections. Overall, their opinions are positive, agreeing that the E3 build has come a long way from the earlier version. They would like to see an option to turn off armor breaking, and their major complaint about game mechanics is slightly-too-high combo damage. They suggest lengthening Soul Charge but reducing its power slightly, because it lasts for only a very short time.

As for characters, they dub Mitsurugi and Sophitia as the most basic, beginner-friendly characters, unsurprisingly. They consider this game to offer best version of Zasalamel, dubbing his combos “stylish.” Interestingly, they also said that Geralt “seems very strong;” he’s mostly an unexplored character at this point.

If you’re more of a watcher than a reader, they also recorded footage of their matches.

Here’s an extended clip of Kayane using Geralt and showing his potential.

Hayate uploaded a clip of him using Kilik against Keev’s Nightmare.

The SoulCalibur.fr channel uploaded several clips of gameplay with various characters.

In case you missed it, check out the Talim reveal trailer.

Watch high-level SoulCalibur VI gameplay from CEO: Team Kenny Omega vs. Team Jebailey

Among the many spectacular matches at CEO 2018, a special SoulCalibur VI exhibition took place.

Professional wrestler Kenny Omega takes to the stage to introduce his team, following a 5 vs. 5, winner-stays-on competition. The two team captains start off, with Kenny Omega using Kilik and Jebailey going for Geralt. The two show off what experience they have, with Jebailey emerging victorious, but losing rather quickly to UYU|BeautifulDude‘s Grøh, who won a recent ESL tournament at E3. The matches heat up considerably as more knowledgeable and practiced players enter the fray.

We can honestly say, this is probably the most skilled SouCalibur VI gameplay to date, so it’s really worth watching. Particularly noteworthy are: OmegaXCN, who pulls off more complicated pressure with Taki’s Possession stance; IceColdEdge’s Siegfried, who rings out Ivy with a huge Soul Charge combo at 34:00; and LinkKRC, who figured out really nice Ivy combos and a pretty effective horizontal move to keep opponents in check.

There were actually some more warm-up matches before the exhibition that didn’t make it into the YouTube clip above. It’s really worth watching, even just to see great matches between OmegaXCN’s Taki and his opponent, Siegfried; OmegaXCN seemed even more on fire here.
