BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle roundup: DLC character tech — Deadly Yang, Carmine, Aegis, and Hakumen combos

As seven new characters just arrived in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, players are once again busy developing new tech as fervently as Elon Musk. Get ready to see new one-touch-death combos, powerful set ups, and pressure that won’t let the opponent get out easily. We’re taking a closer look at Yang, Carmine, Aegis, and Hakumen.

Obviously, comboing your opponent into the Astral Heat is a worthy goal to strive for, so if you need to a few pointers, check out the compilation above for Aegis, Vatista, Carmine, Naoto, Hakumen, Jubei, and Yang footage.

Kalibur optimized the Aegist Astral Heat combo by starting from even less bars.

Here’s a fairly straightforward corner combo with Aegis that will keep the opponent on their toes with a cannon attack once they get up.

Kalibur is also finding out some useful Aegis option selects; visit his Twitter for more Aegis and Es tech.

Looks like Jin isn’t the only one with really high solo damage. Keep in mind though that Carmine spends some health on certain attacks.

Here’s a pretty terrifying set up with Carmine that seems to cover defensive options quite well.

This deadly combo from Hakumen and Tager should finish off most characters in the game.

Uri put together this aesthetically pleasing Yang and Hakumen combo.

At last, Hakumen can keep those pesky command throws off of his sanctimonious person.

Are you having flashbacks to other BlazBlue games yet? Hakumen shows he doesn’t need a partner as he kills his foes while in Resonance Blaze.

Here’s a straightforward combo that sets up a safe jump for Yang in the corner.

If you’re more of a lover than a fighter, also check out these unique interactions between BBTAG DLC characters.

Unboxing the BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Collector’s Edition

Shoryuken offers a hands-on look at what’s in the BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Collector’s Edition package.

bbtag ce promo

The BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Collector’s Edition has quite a few goodies in it, but is it worth your money? I decided to make an unboxing video to show you the contents up close to see for yourself!

A big box that showcases the colors of each franchise houses the Collector Edition items. Inside, the steel case is first. I’m a big fan of it; it has special art from the Japanese edition of the game. The colors on it are vivid and powerful, showcasing each protagonist: Ragna, Yu, Hyde, and Ruby. Obviously, it feels very solid; it’s a great way to house the disc.

You still get a regular retail box of the game with that fancy “Evo 2018 main lineup” sticker. It’s nice to have a regular box, though there’s no instruction booklet, so it feels a little redundant; and that feeling is furthered because the standard edition of the game comes with a mini soundtrack CD (seven tracks). However, the Collector’s Edition comes with a 15-track disc that has all of those tracks from the mini CD, and more. We can hear each version of Crossing Fate (just in case you haven’t heard enough of it yet), even the short version used in the opening. It’s good that the disc has the mix track of each RWBY character as that equals to multiple tracks from the show.

The acrylic “figures” are flat representations of each protagonist. To be honest, these are surprisingly nice. They stand securely on their flat stands. I get the feeling that multiple figures were out of Arc System Works’ budget (or maybe they could have you choose one, but more options still equal to higher operating costs). It’s nice to have each franchise represented.

Finally, the artbook is a bit of a letdown; not particularly because it’s relatively short (52 pages), but it’s mostly filled with standard “stock” character-select art of the base roster. It does have very cool sketches of the RWBY characters, showing how their attacks and poses were animated. I also love the section at the end that shows sketches of partner introductions.

All in all, it’s a good Collector’s Edition, even though CDs are a bit old-school now. I would maybe like to get a poster instead of the mini-CD that comes in the regular game box.

Thanks to Arc System Works for providing the Collector’s Edition to Shoryuken; you can get your own at the Arc System Works online shop. Check out our BBTAG video review as well!

Detailed analysis breaks down possible changes to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Robin and Ike

Despite the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has only been featured at one event, YouTubers and other Smash enthusiasts have been busy analyzing footage and spotting differences in the new game. If you’re looking to play Fire Emblem characters like Robin or Ike, you’re in good hands.

Mad Ice King starts things off with a detailed look at Robin. Right off the bat, you can see that Robin has new durability meters that show usage of the tomes and sword. A welcome change is the fact that you can adjust the angle on Elwind’s up-B, which improves Robin’s mobility and reduces the chances of getting caught. Discarding the tomes seems better now, as it looks to bounce off when it’s thrown and it may be possible to pick it up again — though this is still mostly speculation. Check out the video for details:

If you’re ready to shout “We like Ike! We like Ike!” turn to this next video from Baselard. He goes over in great detail about the general and specific mechanical changes of Fire Emblem’s sword wielder. The universal changes make him able to jump a little faster. Keep in mind that you can air dodge only once and that wavedashing doesn’t work like it used to. His fully-charged B now releases a short shockwave. Overall, Baselard is pretty excited about Ike’s changes.

Arc System Works will share information about their Kill la Kill game on tonight’s ArcLive stream

Arc System Works is teasing a preview of the upcoming Kill la Kill title during their weekly stream.

Enthusiasts of the Kill la Kill anime, there’s a treat for you tonight. The official Arc System Works Twitter account is sharing the itinerary of their weekly ArcLive stream. Unexpectedly, it looks like we’re going to get a look at the recently-announced Kill la Kill game. After that slightly anti-climactic countdown, it’s not certain what the preview will amount to, yet.

Maybe it’s not too much to hope for a gameplay teaser? We don’t know a lot about the game yet, but we do know that it’s not a traditional fighting game — it’s more of an action title. ASW is publishing the title, while A+ Games is developing, but hopefully that still means there will be a lot of that special ASW touch in the anime adaptation. It will be 1-2 players.

Commentator Samifish will co-host the show, showing off some of the new BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle DLC characters as well. Watch it tonight at 5:00 PM PT on Twitch.

Refer to our Kill la Kill game announcement post for screenshots and a trailer of the game.

Catch up on high-level Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 play with recent Tension Pulse exhibitions

If you’re looking for some quality Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 gameplay, look no further than Tension Pulse, an exciting and ongoing series originating in the United States. Carried through the fairly-reliable Steam servers of the game, the online first-to-seven sets often do themed events, too. It’s also a great chance to learn more about the game, as the entertaining live commentary is often insightful as well. Catch up on the recent episodes below:

The latest episode was all about mirror-matches! It’s an opportunity to see how players who are experts in their character deal with someone who may use the same tricks as they do. But also, there’s enough room for individuality in Guilty Gear so that two people often end up playing the same character in a very different manner. See how Haehyun and I-no players duked it out in the video above.

The previous episode focused on doren2k, one of the best Jam players in the US, who is moving to Japan for a year. Multiple players showed up for tense and funny matches, including a Jam mirror match with sweetxjam. doren2k displays great fortitude as he continuously fights various players over two and a half hours.

Finally, reaching back to May, the above episode focused on players who attended Combo Breaker 2018. Check out sets between kayloud’s Millia and Essay’s I-no, BxA|dot_Nova’s Jack-O’ and DreadedRuffian’s Sin, and UYU|BeautifulDude’s Zato=1 and DaveO’s Sol.

Sonic Fox challenges ZeRo to a match in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

A new Battle of Gods is on the horizon.

It looks like another crossover battle is about to happen in the fighting game scene. Echo Fox|Sonic Fox — a conqueror of multiple fighting games — has started talking about playing Smash, and trying out the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We had a recent multi-part clash between Sonic Fox and GO1 in Dragon Ball FighterZ, and looks like the stage is being set for another fight between big personalities in the FGC.

It looks like there are stakes other than honor and glory. If TSM|ZeRo beats Sonic Fox, the loser will have to keep playing Smash (that might not be a bad thing, depending on how Sonic Fox likes the game).

This new rivalry — some may call a “feud” — only started this weekend, so as of now, the two don’t have a stage set yet. However, whenever and wherever it goes down, it will unquestionably be a hype event.

Pro player SKD shares his thoughts and counters preconceptions about BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

“The damage is too high.” “Burst sucks.” “DP and Reversal moves are scrubby.” “The game is easy, and execution and skill don’t matter” — those are some of the opinions you may have seen floating around BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. Indeed, the game does make some bold design decisions, but, according to accomplished BlazBlue: Central Fiction player PG|SKD, naysayers shouldn’t dismiss the game too quickly.

“In a nutshell, I think this game really rewards good strategy and application, so I think those are two aspects that make it a good fighting game,” writes SKD in a post on Team St1ckbug. “There is a high ceiling for deep, effective strategies. The game gives you so many options, the ensuing ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors’ can become really layered. Calling it ‘RPS’ is not really applicable at that point though, because the practical outcome is that a lot of wins come down to coming up with better strategies and applying them rather than winning the RPS.”

SKD goes on to counter a lot of the negative opinions and misconceptions floating around BBTAG. He said that the damage isn’t too high, unless it’s a Reversal Action punish or a non-mix-up starter. Tagging partners helps counter the high chip damage in the game, especially from Resonance Blaze mode. SKD does bring up Jin and this strategy (Jin can effectively spam his full-screen super to chip down an opponent’s health to 1) and recognizes that it’s a little too strong currently.

He gives a lot of advice about Cross Bursting, as some people believe that it’s too strong and others that it’s too weak, since it loses to anti-airs, assists, and Reversal Action. According to him, the key is watching the Cross gauge and understanding how much resources the opponent currently has. SKD also addresses the auto-combo system and the notion that some characters are watered down from their respective games:

“I see a lot of things like ‘I wish I could do Hyde’s 6B! How could they deprive my favorite character of his best normal?” The best normal in UNIST context is not going to be the best normal in BBTAG context. You may not actually need to, or want to use that normal, and that’s fine. Even if it was good, Hyde did not have an assist in UNIST,” he writes.

“You have to play these characters in BBTAG, not in their original games. To be honest, I do think that the characters were ported relatively well, and retain the meat of what made them ‘them.’”

It’s definitely worth to check out the whole article on Team St1ckbug as SKD addresses a couple more misconceptions. All in all, SKD professes that BBTAG is worthy of your “love, respect, and admiration” and is a good game on the competitive (and casual) level.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle roundup: Focus on team synergy between Jin and Weiss, Nu-13 and Yukiko

Though BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle didn’t have an E3 2018 presence, that doesn’t mean players weren’t busy figuring out new ways to deplete health bars. If you still can’t escape from daunting neutral or need some combo ideas, here’s a couple of general tips as well as videos showing off synergy between Jin, Weiss, Nu-13, and Yukiko. And, if you’re a fan of Es, keep scrolling for a complete tutorial linked below.

First up, rooflemonger goes over some semi-advanced tips to elevate your game. If you’ve mastered the basics, check out his tips regarding damage optimization, backdashing, and more.

The first half of video focuses on Jin, showing his high-damage solo potential. But it also displays team combos, showing off their synergy in a variety of situations (like Reversal Action punishes, which prevent the opponent from using Cross Burst). We get to see some combos into the Astral Heat, and then the latter half focuses more on Weiss.

Who knew Yukiko can find some use after all? Even though she’s still a very weak character overall in BBTAG, she does bring some unique synergy to her partner. The video shows practical combos that set up good zoning situations for them, and even allows time to heal up or Fire Boost for increased damage.

If you’re all about Es, check out this complete tutorial above to get yourself familiar with the various aspects of her game.
