SoulCalibur VI story mode screenshots show Astaroth and tease storyline

More and more secrets from SoulCalibur VI have been getting revealed, over time. With a newer build, improved UI, and gameplay footage of new characters like Geralt, we’ve learned a lot about the upcoming Stage of History. And lore aficionados can get their fill as well, thanks to a batch of revealing screenshots teasing many plot points of the game.

The SoulCalibur VI story trailer kicked things off, teasing a mix of game-engine rendered cutscenes and rich illustrations with dialogue between characters. We see some new characters show up, such as Xianglian, who is Xianghua’s sister and is very relevant to Story Mode. Notably, one of the screenshots with Maxi features Astaroth in the background; we’re rather expecting the big axe-wielder to show up, but this is definitely additional evidence that he will probably be announced soon.

Other than that, we see lots of Kilik — getting assaulted by Grøh, as well as Nightmare tempting him. Kilik has been stated to be the protagonist, so we’re going to see lots of his internal turmoil with his tainted, demonic side. Also notable is the screenshot with Xianghua wielding Soul Calibur, the counterpoint to the game’s evil sword, Soul Edge. There’s also a screenshot showing the timeline, which is a good indication of how the story mode might actually play out in practice.

ZeRo wins the first Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, the E3 2018 Invitational

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now a reality, and what better way to welcome it than with the Invitational tournament at E3. Even the game’s creator Masahiro Sakurai made an appearance, commenting how worried he was that the game might freeze during gameplay. However, the event had plenty of hype and excellent matches in the brand new game.

Starting at about the 1-hour & 45-minute mark in the footage embedded below, Sakurai greets the crowd. The matches included a variety of settings, including fights with items, some with teams, and some without. The event starts out with some two-on-two action. At the 3-hour & 14-minute mark, special celebrity guests show up. Smash player Nairo played a 3-versus-1 match against celebrities: WWE Superstar Ember Moon, NFL player Mike Daniels, and actress Olivia Holt.

Shortly after that is perhaps the most hype part of the event, the Grand Finals between TSM|ZeRo and Echo Fox|MKLeo. MkLeo manages to reset the bracket, playing Bayonetta at first, then sticking to Sonic. ZeRo goes between Mario and Sheik, but ultimately sticks with Sheik. It looked like he was about to lose, but in the clutch last match with everything at stake, he stays calm and earns to win — becoming champion of both of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Invitationals to date.

It’s important to listen to Sakurai at the end as well, who said that the game is under “constant balancing.” Expect lots to change, but Nintendo already gave a great showing of the next Smash game.

New SoulCalibur VI Yoshimitsu gameplay footage — and the game’s release date may be announced at E3

Motohiro Okubo is a busy man. In his third interview at E3, this time with YouTube’s Geoff Keighley, Okubo revealed additional details about the game, and showed off exclusive footage of SoulCalibur VI.

One interesting tidbit that Okubo dropped is regarding guest characters. He revealed that Geralt is indeed intergrated into the game’s story, and he’s a character that is on the disc of the game (or rather, included digitally). Okubo does not rule out the possibility that more guest characters can come as downloadable content. The latter part of the conversation turned to SoulCalibur VI‘s development progress. Okubo said that the release date “may” be revealed during E3 — again, he didn’t say this with absolute certainty.

For what it’s worth though, this was also our first look at another returning fighter, Yoshimitsu, prominently featured in gameplay clips against Geralt and others.

In another interview, Okubo confirmed that Character Creation Mode will return to the series. Stay tuned to Shoryuken as more details emerge around SoulCalibur VI and other games.

Character Creation Mode is confirmed to return in SoulCalibur VI by the game’s producer Motohiro Okubo

“Character creation is almost vital to the Souls series and you can expect it come back in SoulCalibur VI.”

E3 2018 has been a very exciting time for SoulCalibur VI fans, even if the game didn’t get time on the major stage. What’s more important for the Souls aficionados is gameplay footage of Geralt and many other newly-announced characters, like Taki and Maxi. There’s more gameplay, as well as some exciting news coming from the official Twitch channel — which featured an interview with the game’s producer, Motohiro Okubo.

Near the end of the gameplay demo and interview, Okubo was asked about character creation mode, and though he was a little tentative about making an official statement, he said that we can “expect it to come back” in the newest installment of the series. However, either Okubo can’t talk about what it looks like yet, or the mode is far from realization. Okubo is staying tight-lipped so far about all the other single-player modes in the game, but this should be big news for those who enjoyed creating both stylish and wacky fighters in the previous games.

View the first gameplay of SoulCalibur VI’s guest character Geralt the Witcher, and other new characters

E3 is underway, and with it there’s a treat for SoulCalibur VI fans. We finally have the opportunity to view the fabled Geralt of Rivia in action (other than the reveal trailer). IGN had the opportunity to interview the game’s producer, Motohiro Okubo, as well as feature the game’s guest character in actual gameplay.

Perhaps the first noticeable thing when viewing the footage — embedded below — is a completely rehashed UI in comparison to the build we have previously seen. The colors are crisper and brighter, and the various gauges are overall more readable. The new ship port stage is featured. Geralt fights Kilik at first, showcasing some moves. The next match features a Geralt mirror match at his home stage, Kaer Mohen. There’s an additional new stage shown in a match with Xianghua. Around the 56-minute mark, Siegfried shows up, another character that we haven’t seen in play yet. Geralt also faces Nightmare in another new stage.

After the break, at the 1:01 hour mark, Maxi fights against Zasalamel at a previously-unrevealed desert background. We also get a first look at Taki and Ivy in subsequent matches.

There’s a ton of new things to check out in this new build. Check out the matches below, while listening to a translated interview with Okubo.

Naruto, Goku, Frieza, Luffy and others collide in multi-franchise crossover “Jump Force”

It seems like BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is not the recent game with colliding universes. During the Microsoft E3 conference, the company presented Jump Force, a new 3D brawler coming in 2019.

The trailer presents the world’s most famous shinobi, Naruto, Luffy from One Piece, as well as Frieza and Goku from Dragon Ball Z colliding in battle in what looks like New York City. We see some early in-game shots, but at this stage it’s unclear exactly what exact form the gameplay will take, or if the title will be 1-on-1 or team-based.

The end of the trailer teases Light Yagami and Ryuk from Death Note. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty hype about either Light brawling with his fists, or using Ryuk like its his Persona, and then writing down Naruto’s name in his notebook as a finishing move…

The game uses Unreal Engine and is developed in collaboration between Bandai Namco and Spike Chunsoft. Expect more details to surface soon.

Learn the basics of Grøh, SoulCalibur VI’s newest character

Grøh is SoulCalibur VI‘s new and original character, and thus, no one has much information on him yet. Other then having played him at certain events, knowledge from past games won’t help understanding him. The assassin stands out with an aesthetic that seems closer to anime games, giving him a unique and edgier flair than most of the other “classic” fighters. Hayate gathered information on Grøh and prepared a new breakdown video that explains how this character functions.

Starting with some first impressions, Hayate judges Grøh as a fighter who has a good balance of speed and range, paired with great mobility. Several of his pokes go into his stance, Innocent Draw, which is key to his gameplay. 66K is a very good launcher which evades high-level attacks and then jumps up in the air. You can transition into his stance by holding forward with certain attacks. According to Hayate, the stance feels very “complete.” Some attacks from Innocent Draw will loop, keeping the character in the stance.

In Soul Charge, Grøh has access to some additional moves during the stance, including some teleporting strikes. Grøh can play a good poking game at range and mix-up the opponent when he’s close. In Soul Charge, his mobility gets to crazy levels, since he can appear immediately at certain spots and attack. As for weaknesses, he isn’t as good at punishing blocks, and he needs to take some risks.

If you’re considering another character for SoulCalibur VI, check out Hayate’s Kilik overview as well.

Recently announced Dead or Alive 6 will have a resource bar and a new “Special” attack button

Dead or Alive 6 will be more accessible to newcomers but still in-depth and with a decreased focus on… fan-service?

Seemingly out of nowhere, Team Ninja announced a new title in the Dead or Alive series — which, for a bit was looking… well, either dead or alive. The sixth iteration is looking to achieve a difficult balance: both satisfy long-time veterans and those who take fighting games very seriously, as well as appeal to a more casual audience and even to those who may have been turned off by its old aesthetic.

The report from IGN’s website goes in-depth with producer and director Yohei Shimbori; IGN has had a chance to play the game, and they report that it’s remarkably faithful to the older entries of the series. And yet, a big addition to the control scheme is the Special button, which executes new mechanics with just that — a press of a single button (and some directional inputs). Pressing the trigger alone unleashes a new Fatal Rush, which is a “powerful combo attack,” done by just mashing the button. (Thought there are drawbacks to it; it can be dodged or spaced out.)

More importantly, though, there is a new Break Gauge, basically a super meter, which is new territory to the DOA series. It fills up from landing hits or blocking, and pressing forward with the Special button executes a Break Blow, an animated and flashy attack. Pressing back and the Special button is a defensive counter technique, Break Hold, that works against any attack levels.

The trailer shows off high-fidelity graphics that are more realistic than ever before in the series. Running with that, IGN addressed the elephant in the room: what about the bodacious babes of DOA?

“We wanted to make a more cool and mature Dead or Alive this time, and to that end, we made a conscious decision to make the characters less sexualized,” Shimbori told IGN during the preview.

“The female characters are still attractive, as are the men, but first and foremost they are fighters,” Yutaka Saito, the game’s art director, told IGN.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle roundup: Blake combos and frame data, powerful Orie combos, and more

As BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is properly out in the wild now, players are busy figuring the newly-released characters: Blake, Orie, Kanji, and Platinum. We’re going to focus on the first two in this post. Blake certainly is getting lots of attention and lots of combos posted; after all, she is an entirely new character. Orie, on the other hand, comes from Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], but she’s looking really strong, with extremely good mix-up options and fast screen coverage.

Here’s a video of pretty optimal Blake combos. Her solo attack strings can certainly get pretty long when you’re jumping. There’s also a combo off an overhead and a midscreen cross-up setup with an assist. Toward the end, there’s an example of a Reversal Action punish and a combo into Astral Heat.

Tari posted Blake frame data in two Tweets, so check here to know what is plus and minus:

Thulius posted a setup between Rachel and Blake that traps the opponent in an airblock that’s met with an air unblockable DP.

This Blake and Ruby combo is more about style than damage, but it looks so darn cool. Team RWBY looks spectacular together in this game.

Uri made an unblockable setup with Orie and Jin in the corner; he said it’s possible to use Reversal Action at certain places to get out of this.

If you’re hunting for that Cross Burst, Orie’s EX move in the air, j.214C, will get around in a stylish and effective manner.

Here’s a more substantial clip that shows how well Orie works with Yu. Their pressure masks the mix-up options really well, and can include a safe jump in some situations.

Deadly Reversal Action punish with Es and Orie:

TheArm also posted a setup with Orie, but he paired her up with Hazama for corner shenanigans.

Lastly, LTL teaches us an important lesson about knowing roundstart options:
