As MMO and RPG players, it’s easy for us to fall prey to tunnel vision. We read websites that focus on those interests and news directly related to our favorite genres. It’s a natural but short-sighted approach to being a gamer, especially if you want any hint of where those genres are about to go. Today, we’re going to look at action games and why they have more to do with the future of RPGs than anything else in years.

Yesterday, Gamasutra ran a feature about how players can only process about 200 social connections drawing attention to Dunbar’s Number theory. It brought up a very interesting point in the MMO world and how important the true size of a game really need to be? The vast worlds of 2000 to 2010 have given way to highly instanced MMOs like Elder Scrolls Online and Guild Wars 2.
– What Ever Happened to Live Events?
The MMO genre has huge potential to make use of live events. Orchestrated by developers for players to enjoy – even if for a limited time – they offer seemingly spontaneous content (despite requiring months of planning) that’s both original and unexpected. Live events also offer respite from the predictable roadmap we’re often fed.
