Atlus to Publish the King of Fighters XIV in North America, Promises Improved Online Play

Atlus U.S.A. has officially announced that they will be publishing SNK Playmore’s upcoming fighter, the King of Fighters XIV in North America.

The company has had a history of bringing multiple fighting game franchises, such as Guilty Gear, Persona 4 Arena, as well as previous titles in the King of Fighters series–going as far back as the EX series for the Game Boy Advance–to western audiences. More recently, they handled the western console release of the King of Fighters XIII.

As part of their announcement, Atlus listed a rundown of the game’s features, which you can read below.

  • 3D Evolution: All 50 fighters, movesets and more are rendered in full 3D graphics that preserves the essence of King of Fighters‘s visual style but updates it with a whole new dimension.
  • The Best Refinement since The King of Fighters ’98: Through extensive playtesting and balancing, the controls have been streamlined, and the Combo and Max Mode mechanics have been overhauled to create the most competitive fighter in SNK’s history.
  • The The King of Fighters Saga Continues: There’s a robust single-player storyline where several years have passed since the previous The King of Fighters tournament. Now a worldwide business, the global The King of Fighters will decide who is the strongest as both individuals and companies with their own ambitions have come to compete. Players compete against CPU-controlled opponents to unlock the storyline.
  • The Best Roster Yet: There are 50 fighters total, with 31 returning from previous entries into the The King of Fighters series, and 19 brand new characters. All 50 characters will be available at the game’s launch.
  • Revamped Online Experience: The King of Fighters XIV has devoted a lot of development time to improving the game’s netcode for vastly improved online gameplay. The King of Fighters XIV uses the PS4’s online architecture to have a whole host of online conveniences, from spectating to saving replay/battle data, and having a single online The King of Fighters XIV profile to connect with friends.

The last on the list is probably the most exciting bit about this announcement, as the console release of the King of Fighters XIII wasn’t exactly known for having good netcode.

The King of Fighters XIV will launch on PlayStation 4 sometime later this year.

Desk’s Birdie MegaMix Seamlessly Blends Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter V

A couple of weeks ago, Desk released a combo video mashup compiling footage of the only three (current roster) characters to appear in Street Fighters III, IV, and V. That video seamlessly blended footage from across the decades to show the similarities the characters retained through the titles, while providing a truly unique viewing experience through creative editorial work.

Luckily, that sort of video wasn’t the last of its kind, as Desk’s latest offering gives Birdie a similar spotlight. The video, which you can find below, takes a close look at Birdie’s appearances in both Capcom’s most recent offering, as well as the old favorite, Street Fighter Alpha 2, through comparisons of normals, specials, and combos. With all of this side-by-side footage, it’s easy to see that the years haven’t been kind to the food-loving punk rocker, but he’s still more than capable of putting opponents in their place, and that isn’t just Desk’s execution talking.

Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments.

Street Fighter V Servers Going Offline for Scheduled Maintenance

Street Fighter V players looking to get in some online play this morning and early into the afternoon will have to hold off on doing so thanks to a round of scheduled server maintenance coming our way. According to a Tweet that went live just a short while ago, Capcom plans to have the game offline from the hours of 10 AM PDT to 3 PM PDT (1 PM EDT to 6 PM EDT).

We do not currently have concrete details surrounding what, if anything, this downtime may bring to the game, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as the day progresses.

Beefy Smash Doods Offer Strategies to Stop Bayonetta in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

With all the buzz in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U scene surrounding Bayonetta’s tournament legality, it only makes sense for one of the biggest names in tutorials for the title to drop in with their own take on handling the situation. In a new video, the Beefy Smash Doods get right down to business, offering up ten minutes of tips and tricks for besting the maligned character.

It wouldn’t be a set of anti-Bayonetta tech without mention of Witch Time, which the Beefy Smash Doods argue as one of the better moves in the game, but certainly not a flawless one. They suggest to lean heavily on grabs with true follow-up options to tack on as much guaranteed damage as possible while avoiding being caught in what can result in extremely early stock loss.

Since her neutral game isn’t actually all that great, the video also suggests forcing Bayonetta to approach, which can result in poor decisions on her part, and big punishment opportunities for her opponent. And if you’re fighting Bayonetta, you’re certain to fall victim to a number of her lengthy combos, so the tutorial includes a section dedicated to successfully escaping such situations.

Killer Instinct Season 3 Patch Addresses Kan-Ra and Glacius Glitches, More

The folks at Iron Galaxy Studios launched a small patch for Killer Instinct Season 3 just a couple of hours ago. Those looking for balance changes in this update will find nothing of the sort, as the patch works mostly to address bugs encountered by players since the launch of the third season.

The most notorious bug that the team squashed was tied to Kan-Ra’s Swarm. In the previous build, this projectile colliding with a projectile from the other player could result in some hilariously game-breaking situations. Additionally, the team fixed an issue tied to Glacius’ Shatter, and addressed some issues with the in-game shop.

The update brings slight changes to the way ranking points function, too, and you can find the information surrounding those changes here. You can find the full patch notes below.

Killer Instinct Version 3.04 Changes

General Fixes

  • Cross Buy Updates
    • Service improvements to cross buy on Windows 10 and Xbox One.
    • If you bought Shadow Jago on Xbox One, and play on Windows 10, please note that you will need to update Killer Instinct to version 3.04 on Windows 10.
  • KI for Windows 10 now has improved support for monitors with refresh rates higher than 60hz.
  • Fixed a crash that would sometimes occur while the game was checking a user’s DLC.
  • Ranked Leagues scoring changes. Read all about them here.

Glacius

  • Fixed a bug that allowed opponents to get hit by Shatter during their pre-jump frames.

Kan-Ra

  • Fixed a bug that caused the spit startup part of the Swarm projectile to damage other players if it came in contact with projectiles they own.

Windows 10 Update Installation Help

  • If you are a Windows 10 player, please follow these steps to grab the update:
    • Launch the Windows Store App. Make sure you are signed in.
    • Click the User icon next to the search bar.
    • Select Downloads and Updates from the drop-down menu.
    • Click the blue “check for updates” button.
    • You should see an update for Killer Instinct.
    • Click to install, or select “update all.”

Street Fighter V Glitch Lets Players Pick Previous Versions of Characters

Throughout its history, certain versions of Street Fighter have allowed players to select older versions of characters before stepping into a battle. Now, it seems that Street Fighter V has joined the likes of such past titles thanks to a glitch in the game’s character select screen.

The glitch in question concerns Alex. By having the cursor start on Alex–by setting him as a favorite character–players are then able to use the 1.01 versions of all the other characters.

On r/StreetFighter, dantarion notes that this is likely due to the fact that the game retains the files for both the 1.01 and 1.02 versions of the characters. The former are stored in a folder labeled 000, while the latter are in a new folder labeled 001. Being a new character, Alex only has a 000 folder. Since the glitch occurs when the character select cursor starts on Alex, it seems this somehow causes all the characters selected afterward to load files from the 000 folder as well.

Now, this shouldn’t be that big an issue in terms of balance, considering that the game hasn’t had any major balance changes aside from the removal of a few option selects, though small exceptions certainly exist.

Killer Instinct Season 3 Mini Roundup – Flipout Basics, Option Selects, and More

Killer Instinct Season 3 is now in full swing, and the availability of the title on PC has certainly brought in a host of new players itching to start laying into each other with lengthy combos. With this in mind, we’ve gathered up a few videos surrounding the game to help newcomers get started as quickly as possible on the path to Killer rank. Let’s go!

First up, Sajam takes a look at the game’s new flipout system, which adds all sorts of devastating mixup options. Sajam gives a rundown of how TJ Combo can make the most out of this system, but he’s certainly not the only character able to use it. Stick around until the end of the video for some tips on how to deal with these sorts of setups on the defensive end as well.

Thanks to the way the combo system works in Killer Instinct, it’s possible to use an easy option select to hit-confirm. While the inputs may differ slightly across the board, the general idea remains the same on all characters: buffer a linker into your opener and if the opener hits, the linker comes out and connects as well. If the opener doesn’t connect as a hit–you guessed it–the linker doesn’t come out. This allows for the offensive party to continue pressure as they see fit.

To see this concept in action, check out this second video offering from Sajam.

David “UltraDavid” Graham of UltraChen TV could probably find an option select in Hungry Hungry Hippos, so it comes as little surprise that he’s already released a short video demonstrating a useful OS for Killer Instinct’s third season. The option select is fairly simple, making use of a jumping short attack followed by a specifically-timed fierce–though other auto-double options should work just fine as well–then a throw to allow easy confirmation into a combo if the jump short hits, and performing a throw if it’s blocked.

And to wrap things up, we’ve included a ridiculously long Ultra Combo–198 hits, to be exact–performed by none other than Killer Instinct’s embodiment of disrespect, Rash. While we can’t verify whether or not this is truly a world record as the video title suggests, we can say that it is, by far, the longest Ultra Combo for the newcomer we’ve seen.

Pick Up Ten Tricks for a Beefier Zangief in Street Fighter V

If you’re going to be the best wrestler on the Russian scene, you’ve got to know how to properly command your bulk in the ring. That means picking up proper meaty timings, knowing when you can connect a Critical Art, and abusing your V-Skill when you can, because nothing is more intimidating than staring down a tower of pure muscle burning bright red as it slowly approaches.

In a new tutorial, Dr.fatbody–who has a truly great handle if we’re being honest–demonstrates how to make the most of some of the previously mentioned situations, while also offering insights into a handful of other tips and tricks at Zangief’s disposal in Street Fighter V.
