Early Street Fighter V Data Confirms Vega is a Speed Demon

While beta tests have given the community the opportunity to explore the surface of Street Fighter V, those who took the time to dig deep into the underlying code have provided a much more concrete look at what makes the game’s characters tick. Case in point, Eternal0Star recently compiled data provided by Dantarion that gives us an idea of how the cast stacks up in terms of walking speed.

This information, which we’ve ordered below, allows us to rank the latest beta roster in terms of both forward and backward movement as well as compare the difference between the two. Sure, Vega felt fast, but now we can accurately describe just how much quicker he is when compared to those on the lower end of the chart like Dhalsim and M. Bison.

Other characters that rank towards the top include Chun-Li and Cammy, matching their respective speeds from Street Fighter IV, while obvious folks like Birdie and Zangief sit near the bottom. A funny note is that Vega can either be a speedster or a doddering old man depending on which region you hail from. Yay localization!

Please note that, as this data was taken from a beta test, it’s entirely likely that nothing will remain the same in the final release.

DudeBag87 Breaks Out of the Ken Flowchart in Olympic Gaming’s Latest Player Spotlight

In their latest Ultra Street Fighter IV player spotlight, Olympic Gaming showcases one of the Rush and Kill Clan’s up-and-coming players.

While he’s not exactly a tournament staple, DudeBag87 and his Ken have caught the eye of more than a few folks online. His aggressive play has been known to bust out some interesting and uncommonly seen techniques that break the flowchart mold typically attributed to the character.

As with all of Olympic Gaming’s spotlights, you can learn more about DudeBag in the brief interview included in the video’s description.

Capcom UK Hosts Christmas Street Fighter V Tournament

Over the holidays, the folks at Capcom UK held a small Street Fighter V tournament as part of their Christmas festivities. While mainly for fun, this has provided us with over an hour of new footage for the upcoming game.

Now, don’t head into this video expecting ridiculously high-level competition. As we mentioned before, this was a fun diversion during their holiday party featuring mainly Capcom employees, but it does provide another perspective on the game from those who had a hand in making it what it is.

Oh, and spoiler alert, Birdie wins again.

Core-A Gaming Asks, “Should We Stop Playing Side-by-Side?”

When it comes to playing fighting games, there’s one important cultural divide that’s easily overlooked. While players in arcades throughout Asia tend to play on separate setups, the western side-by-side format has been more dominant when it comes to tournaments (including Asian tournaments like South East Asia Major and Manila Cup).

In their latest video, Core-A Gaming takes a look at both layouts and explains how each affects the meta-game in its own way. In particular, they point out how the side-by-side layout introduces factors such as being able to hear the other player’s button presses and how players can use it to their advantage.

One particular example they point out is how Justin Wong mashed his stick and buttons to try to distract Daigo Umehara during the famous Evo Moment #37 in an attempt to get the latter to hopefully miss an input.

This, of course, leads to the big question: with the genre moving towards more high-profile competition, should the side-by-side format be dropped in favor of the head-to-head or separated setups?  Should we as a community move towards the setup that encourages players to focus solely on the game at the cost of tension and hype, or are the factors introduced by the side-by-side format just part of the game?

Check out the video below and share your thoughts on the topic in the comments.

Samurai Warriors’ Naotora Ii to Join Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Cast

Some time back, Koei Tecmo announced that a new character would be coming to Dead or Alive 5 Last Round. Now, we finally know the identity of that new character.

In a recent live stream, Koei Tecmo revealed that Naotora Ii from their Sengoku Musou series will be joining the cast of Dead or Alive 5 Last Round as a guest character.

This isn’t the first time Dead or Alive has featured cameos from other franchises. Dead or Alive 4 included female Spartan Nicole, and Dead or Alive 5 previously introduced four Virtua Fighter characters.

In her home series, Naotora is the twentieth head of the Ii clan who wields weaponized boots into battle. This may hint at her gameplay being kick-centric when she makes her debut in arcades this March. In the meantime, here’s an archive of her debut.
