Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono and Tomoaki Ayano Heading to GameStart 2015 This Weekend

This weekend, top Ultra Street Fighter IV players will be throwing down in the Capcom Pro Tour Asia Finals at GameStart 2015 in Singapore. But apart from bringing tournament goers their penultimate shot of Capcom Cup qualifying spots, the convention may have a bit more up its sleeve.

On Sunday, November 15, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono and Tomoaki Ayano are set to take the stage for what the official schedule calls a “Street Fighter V Producer Session.” This happens to be just an hour before the Ultra Street Fighter IV grand finals begin–the perfect time for a Street Fighter V-related announcement to get everyone’s blood pumping.

The exact nature of what these two intend to announce–and indeed, if they intend to announce anything at all–remains unknown at this time. With the days until Street Fighter V’s release falling away, we’ve got only so many (wildly) appropriate events from which news surrounding the game can spring, so it makes sense that they might have something to share. Stay tuned to Shoryuken for any details that the two decide to divulge.

GameStart Asia is set to take place November 13-15.

Famitsu Shares More of Misty’s Projectile-Heavy Gameplay in Blade Arcus from Shining EX

Back during Tokyo Game Show, Sega revealed that the upcoming console port Blade Arcus from Shining EX will feature an appearance from Shining Hearts’ resident pirate princess Misty. The small bit of gameplay footage they provided showed a zoning playstyle similar to Venom of Guilty Gear fame, but it was hard to draw too many conclusions without seeing more.

Fortunately, the developers have obliged by providing Famitsu a bit more time with the game. The two videos below highlight more of Misty’s fireball game, showing the ways in which she is able to stay away from the opponent and mix them up with her various projectiles.

Blade Arcus from Shining EX is scheduled to release for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 on November 26.

Newer, Younger, eSports-ier; Capcom Talks Expanding Their Audience with Street Fighter V

It should really come as no surprise that Capcom is looking to bring in a fresh crop of fighting game players when Street Fighter V drops next year. A larger audience means more money, but it also means another generation of dedicated fans, much like the enormous influx provided by Street Fighter IV when it released in 2008.

But how exactly are they going about achieving this goal? MCV UK recently caught up with Capcom’s Brian Ayers to discuss just that.

As the developer’s EMEA (that’s Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) brand manager, Ayers is focused on expanding the audience through a variety of means. “The ambitions with Street Fighter V were to make the game approachable and accessible again, but also to make everything with the characters feel a lot more individual and bring out more chances for people to find the right competitor that suits them,” he explained, noting that they are hoping to bring in a newer, younger, and eSports-savvy crowd with this next iteration. “Street Fighter is actually one of the first eSports titles out there, but it’s relatively underground compared to the likes of Dota 2 and League of Legends.”

These goals have also affected the ways in which Capcom will be updating the game. As you’ve likely heard, Street Fighter will forever be Street Fighter V, no Super or Ultra additions here. Instead, small updates will provide the community with new cast members and gameplay changes on a regular basis, extending the game’s life without having to make another huge investment.

Ayers promises that they are hammering out schedules not only for character releases but balance adjustments as well. “Moving to a service-based platform means we can be a lot more reactive to balancing; we don’t have to wait for another disc version. We’ll be making sure we have a dedicated balancing timeframe.”

Street Fighter V will be available for PlayStation 4 and PC starting February 16.

Combofiend Shows How to Succeed with Dhalsim and Zangief in Street Fighter V

As both a former competitive player and the game’s associate producer, Capcom’s Peter “Combofiend” Rosas is arguably the foremost authority on Street Fighter V at the moment. As such, it’s always a treat whenever he takes the its characters out for a spin.

Rosas recently sat down with the folks at IGN to demonstrate what Dhalsim and Zangief, two of the game’s most recently revealed veterans, can pull off with their revised movesets.

Of the two, Dhalsim is the most changed from his previous installments. The removal of his horizontal fireballs in favor of arced ones has left many Dhalsim mains scratching their heads at how to use him properly. In the video below, Combofiend demonstrates how players can properly utilize new tools, like his floaty V-Skill, to control space and dominate opponents from afar.

While Zangief isn’t as radically altered as Dhalsim, the removal of his green hand has caught many off guard, especially players used to Street Fighter IV. Rosas demonstrates how the Russian wrestler can use his current arsenal of tools to get the opponent in grappling range.

Street Fighter V is set to launch for PlayStation 4 and PC on February 16.

Masaaki Kukino Describes the Konami Fighting Game That Never Was

Video game development is a fickle business, prone to false starts and dead ends that rarely see the light of day. That sentiment is increased tremendously when talking about fighters, as the genre often fails to meet the same profitability of its contemporaries while carrying even greater demands.

Former SNK Playmore producer Masaaki Kukino (who many readers may know for his work on King of Fighters XIII) learned this first hand during his tenure at Konami. While its name has been lost to time, Kukino and his team began work on an unreleased fighter sometime in 1992, putting together a cast inspired by mythological and religious figures.

During an interview for the first volume of The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers, John Szczepaniak spoke to Kukino about this project at length. Describing it as closer to Mortal Kombat than Street Fighter, Kukino explained that the characters would fall apart as fights wore on, revealing them to be robots instead of flesh and bone. “We were trying to do that using 2D images, not even 3D. So the manpower required to create and program that was really beyond imagination,” he continued. “It happened more than 20 years ago, so would have been difficult at the time.”

Unfortunately, it was that manpower requirement that eventually contributed to the project’s demise.

“It had really breakthrough ideas in terms of art style, and also the [mechanical] game system, and we found the idea really interesting. So we wanted to do it. The reason why we could not proceed on that project was that it required really high manpower, and it was so time consuming,” Kukino said. “Also the capacity required for the hardware was too high. So those challenges were not something we were able to overcome. That’s why we had to terminate it. The entire team had to shift its focus on to something else.”

Could this Konami title have changed the landscape of fighting games in their heyday? Would we be seeing fans clamoring for a high-definition reboot today? We’ll probably never know, but it’s always entertaining when a developer opens up about the past and allows us a glimpse of what could have been. We’ve included a handful of hand-drawn concepts for this game below; be warned, they do depict some slight gore and nudity.

Feel free to let us know what you think of this unreleased title in the comments below. For more of Szczepaniak’s discussion with Kukino, be sure to check out the full interview here.
