Brains, Heart, and Body: Laugh’s Theory on the Three Types of Fighting Gamers

Arcade Stream is back with a new video that goes into some interesting theoretical and philosophical ground. Here, they explain a theory put forward by Ryan “Laugh” Ahn on the three types of fighting gamers.

According to Laugh, fighting gamers can be represented by three different attributes: brains, heart, and body.

Brains refers to the scientific player, the type who spends time in the lab trying to find ways to optimize their game. That said, the almost limitless possibilities and situations in fighting games means it’s impossible to find the optimal answers to all these situations, and unfamiliar situations can be very scary for these players.

Heart, on the other hand, represents the emotional or feeling-based player. A player like this prefers mind games, baiting their opponent, relying on making reads, or as many in the community would call it, “yomi”. This kind of player thrives on the other player’s unfamiliarity with certain situations to get the win.

The final archetype, body, refers to players who are known for their physical capabilities, specifically their execution and reactions. This is the most straightforward of the three archetypes and tends to be the one that people unfamiliar with fighting games tend to think is the only attribute required to succeed. These types of players benefit from characters who have difficult links and combos.

For a closer look at these archetypes, be sure to check out the video below, and let us know which you most strongly represent in the comments.

Early King of Fighters XIV Gameplay Shows Similarities to King of Fighters XIII

As there have only been two teasers released thus far, we know very little about King of Fighters XIV from a gameplay perspective. Much of our perception has been painted by the title’ less than impressive aesthetics, but a new video from ATRyoSakazaki shows that it may have more in common with its predecessor than we thought.

The demonstration below shows that many of the strings performed in the trailers match similar combos in King of Fighters XIII. While there’s obvious timing differences, this video shows that the upcoming title definitely plays like King of Fighters, even if it doesn’t seem to right off the bat.

Capcom Planning to Run More Street Fighter V Stress Tests Before Next Official Beta

This past weekend, fighting game fans were given a little extra time to play Street Fighter V outside the regularly scheduled beta tests. Much like they did before the first, Capcom opened up an early build of the upcoming game for a short stress test, and new details reveal that the community can look forward to more in the future.

We’ve yet to learn when the third and final beta period will launch, but Capcom has confirmed that they are planning to hold more of these stress tests before then. While these serve as an excellent way for the developers to hammer out remaining issues, they also give the community even more opportunities to learn the intricacies of the game and its systems, so be on the look out for more details.

Street Fighter V is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 4 and PC on February 16.

Bafael Explores the Effectiveness of Street Fighter V’s Light Normals

While Street Fighter IV gave players access to highly damaging combos off light normals, Street Fighter V seeks to change that by limiting their effectiveness in that area. That being said, they are still highly useful in a number of different situations.

In his latest primer video, Bafael explores this concept, describing the ways in which this changes overall gameplay strategy. For most characters, light attacks are their only option for low hit-confirms, and their chaining properties allow players to easily convert blockstrings into combos.

For more of Bafael’s findings, as well as a hefty collection of light normal confirms, be sure to check out the full video below. Please note that, as this information was gleaned from the beta, nothing is confirmed to appear in the final release.

LiangHuBBB Bids Farewell to 2015 with the Year’s Best Funny and Cool Moments

Just as they do at the end of every year, LiangHuBBB has compiled a collection of the very best goofy, great, ridiculous, and amazing moments from fighting titles both new and old that have taken place over the last twelve months. This compilation comes a bit earlier than we’re used to seeing, but there’s been no shortage of footage worthy of the LiangHuBBB name.

Since this is the first year that we’ve had with Mortal Kombat X, you can expect to see plenty of strange happenings from the NetherRealm release (double Brutalities, anyone?) but there’s also a plethora of clips from the Street Fighter V beta, Tekken 7, and Killer Instinct, just to name a few. Those who tuned in to earlier compilations this year will be sure to recognize some favorite clips, including a brief cameo by RZR|Xian’s cat and Evil Geniuses’ Justin Wong teaching the next generation of fighting game players about the effectiveness of zoning.
