Cheers, Tears, and Celebration; Kane Blueriver and Hungrybox Embody the Emotion of Qualifying for Evo 2015’s Finals

Finding success in a fighting game, whether it be in a random online game or a local major, can be a rather emotional experience. However, it’s hard to ignore that the Evolution Championship Series, representing our community’s largest tournament year after year, places a unique pressure on its participants, especially those with tangible aspirations of reaching finals on Sunday.

That’s why both of the videos below are so powerful. The Black Eye’s Nicolas “Kane Blueriver” Gonzalez and Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma of Team Liquid, neither strangers to tournament victories, were caught on camera by the fine folks at Hold Back to Block qualifying for top eight at Evo 2015 last month. After long hours of competition, both finally reach that final level in their respective titles, and the emotions on display are absolutely no surprise as they can finally have a chance to catch their breath.

If you missed out on catching these special moments in person, do yourself a favor and check them out now.

Skullgirls’ Robo-Fortune Makes Her Way to Xbox 360

After a bit of a delay, Skullgirls players on Xbox 360 can finally get their hands on the title’s latest (and last) downloadable character, Robo-Fortune. While originally planned to be a skin for the existing Ms. Fortune, this robotic remix brings an entirely unique playstyle to the game, with new animations and attacks setting her apart from the original.

Much like her predecessors, Robo-Fortune is free to download for the next three months. After that, her price will go up to $4.99, so do your best to grab her (even if you don’t own the game) and take advantage of Lab Zero’s generosity.

A quick preview of what Robo-Fortune is capable of can be found in the video below.

But this new character isn’t the only addition to Skullgirls Encore. The latest update also adjusts gameplay balance with a number of general and character-specific changes. Check out the full list here.

Up Your Yang Game in Ultra Street Fighter IV with These Optimized Punishes

Landing the best punish possible can turn an inevitable loss into a victory that gets even the most smug members of the crowd on their feet. Or, you know, a victory that at least prevents the loss of those sweet, sweet, ranked points. Proper punishes are important to every character, but characters like Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Yang, who find themselves on the lower end of the damage spectrum, have even more reason to squeeze every bit of pain out of these situations as possible.

With this in mind, Notorious A.L.B. put together a video showcasing the best options that Yang has for making opponents think twice about sticking out an errant dragon punch. They all deal a respectable amount of damage, and some of them have the added bonus of ending with a safe jump opportunity.

Do note that the soundtrack to this video has some strong NSFW language, but it’s nothing compared to what Gouken players will say when on the receiving end of the final combo.

Smash and Grab Covers How to Properly Wield Roy’s Sword of Seals in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

If you’re looking to hone your skills with one of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s newest contenders, Smash and Grab’s Roy tutorial may be just what you’re looking for.

This extensive guide begins by differentiating Roy and Marth’s movement, showing the fiery swordsman’s superior (non-foxtrot) land speed and less floaty hop. Once movement is out of the way, the team discusses the applications for everything that Roy brings to battle, from tilts to aerials and everything in between. Of course, there’s plenty to be said about how to rack up the damage numbers through various combos as well.

The whole video is set up like a series of cutscenes ripped right out of Fire Emblem, so even if Roy isn’t your boy, you’ll still be entertained.

Tekken 7 Receiving Idolmaster Costumes Because Why Not

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of The Idolmaster, a fellow Bandai Namco property, various female members of the Tekken 7 cast will soon receive costumes based on those worn by the franchise’s pop stars. This should certainly come as no surprise due to Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada’s love of the simulation/rhythm series, proclaimed openly on occasion by wearing shirts depicting his favorite idol, Iori Minase.

The characters scheduled to have their wardrobes expanded in this update include Lucky Chloe (Miki Hoshii), Xiaoyu (Yayoi Takasuki), Alisa (Yukiho Hagiwara), Katarina (Takane Shijou), Asuka (Haruka Amami), Kazumi (Chihaya Kisaragi), Lili (Iori Minase), and Josie (Hibiki Ganaha). Unfortunately, the Paul Phoenix teaser at the beginning was only a joke, and he will not join in on the fun in either series.

For a close look at how the outfits look in Tekken 7, check out the trailer below. More details can be found here.

Jill’s Speed Brings Doom to Her Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Opponents

Since Doctor Doom seems to be the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 equivalent of the Guile theme (read: he goes with everything), it should come as no surprise that the green-garbed Latverian makes a fine partner for Resident Evil’s Jill.

The sheer speed that Jill brings to the table, when paired with Doom’s beam assist, makes for some frustrating mix-up opportunities that can crack even the toughest defenses. If opponents are wise to the left/right mix-up options that the beam assist affords, Jill has plenty of other ways to connect a fist or two. Once she does, she has no trouble setting up a hard tag situation to let Doom come in and run wild with corner loops.

In the video below, Paulow3b demonstrates how to make your Jill and Doom pairing as frustratingly efficient as possible. Have fun!

Vega Revealed for Street Fighter V

With Gamescom 2015 now upon us, rabid Street Fighter fans are eagerly looking forward to getting their claws on any bit of new information about Street Fighter V.  Not one to disappoint, Capcom has just announced that veteran world warrior Vega will be playable in the upcoming title.

In this new trailer, we see the beautiful Spanish ninja sporting an updated look while still retaining his trademark mask and claw. Check it out below for our first bit of gameplay footage.

While Vega has been known to drop his claw during the heat of battle, this series veteran will be able to sheath it all on his own in Street Fighter V, opening up new options in his offensive arsenal. Additionally, he will no longer be able to pick it up if the opponent knocks it off, so learning how to play without it should be a much bigger deal.

Vega’s V-Skill, Matador Turn, gives him the ability to dodge an incoming attack and unleash his own optional follow-up.

Upon activating his Bloody Kiss V-Trigger, Vega gains access to a rose that, on hit, sees the Spaniard unleash a devastating series of attacks. While crouching, this attack turns into an anti-air, and it can even be done from the air, giving Vega a good combo extender or defensive ability depending on the situation.

Vega will be playable at Gamescom 2015, so stay tuned for more details and gameplay footage. For now, check out the gallery of images below and let us know what you think of his return.

New Character, Stage, and Costumes Coming to Dead or Alive 5 Last Round

During the recently concluded DEAD OR ALIVE Festival in Japan, Team NINJA took the time to make some new announcements concerning Dead or Alive 5 Last Round.

The biggest reveal is that the game will be getting some new content in 2016. Come spring of next year, Team NINJA will be adding one new character as well as a new stage to the game.

Whether or not the spring release window refers to the arcade or home console version is as of yet unknown. But judging from past experience, the arcade version will likely get the new character and stage first, with the home console versions getting them a few months afterwards.

Team NINJA also announced a bunch of themed costume packs based on collaborations with other companies. The first, due in September, is planned to feature costumes inspired by Nihon Falcom’s Legend of Heroes and Ys series.

Next up, November will bring with it new looks courtesy of Square Enix, featuring characters from the School Girl Strikers mobile card game.

The third pack, coming sometime this winter, is a collaboration with Tatsunoko Production, featuring costumes from the classic anime Yatterman and Hakushon Daimao. Fighting game fans may be familiar with these, as they previously appeared in Capcom’s Tastunoko vs. Capcom.

Team NINJA also hinted that Marie Rose’s limited edition Red Bull 5G costume, which was originally only released to DEAD OR ALIVE Festival attendees, may eventually be made available for purchase for those who weren’t at the event.

JusticeSoulTuna Unleashes Omega Juri’s Juggle Potential in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Omega Mode may not be the standard for serious competition, but that doesn’t make it any less fun to switch on edition select every once in a while and see what sort of ridiculous stuff you can pull off.

As an ode to such ridiculousness, JusticeSoulTuna recently compiled a combo video dedicated to the Omega variant of Juri. In the video, which you’ll find embedded below, Juri brings the pain in the form of anti-air fireball confirms, Ultra combos where you would least expect them, and a slew of other absurdities.

By the end of the video, you’ll likely be questioning just what sort of juggle point restrictions Juri has while under the effects of Omega Mode.
